i've listened to "an" audiobook for ACOK, it was this the old dude with a british accent that tried really hard to do the different voices and it ended up sounding really amusing. only problem i had was that he went way too slow. i think it took him 5-6 minutes to read each page.

I believe you're talking about Roy Dotrice? He was actually originally cast to play Grand Maester Pycelle but had to drop out due to health reasons.

[possible spoiler]i feel like sean bean is a bit wasted on eddard stark ... but then again that could be said for just about every character in the books, given their ... tenuous life expectancy

Mod's Edit.Too big a spoiler for right now.[Edited on February 1, 2011 at 10:47 AM. Reason : Jeepin4x4]

please, at least attempt to hold the spoilers in this thread (especially huge ones like that) since some people watching it haven't read the books That was kind of the point of creating this separate thread vs the other thread on the books.I know a lot of people watching this will have read the books and are watching it just for the adaptation but I have several friends who are excited to watch who have no idea about that ^.[Edited on January 31, 2011 at 10:01 PM. This has already been discussed.... I know, because I brought it up

Yeah, you really, really should remove that....it's a dick move.Discuss it in a book thread or something. This is for people watching the show, of which a large portion haven't read it.
2/1/2011 10:26:14 AM
maybe a mod can edit BigT716's post to at least put big spoiler tags Since the show is getting closer to airing, I'll go ahead and repost this from the first page:

another good resource has popped up:http://gameofthrones.wikia.com/wiki/Game_of_Thrones_Wikiit is a wiki based purely on the TV show and will not contain spoilers from the story in the books or parts of the story that haven't been shown on the screen yet.

A Dance With Dragons will be published on July 12. The manuscript is huge — the publisher estimates the hardcover edition will run more than 900 pages, putting it about the same length as the longest book in the series, A Storm of Swords. Schedule your summer vacation accordingly. For discussion on the books, see: message_topic.aspx?topic=571882&page=4

Awesome, I'm going to Cabo the week after. Now I have something to read on the plane and the beach.
3/3/2011 10:53:33 AM
Yeah, the wife and I are planning to be in Ireland shortly after that so I'm planning to read it there.
3/3/2011 10:59:24 AM
I'm still a little worried that Martin will pull a Jordan and die before he finishes this. Fatty.
3/3/2011 11:14:30 AM
If I had fans that called me a fat fuck all the time, I would probably finish the book for my own enjoyment, then videotape myself burning the only copy.
3/3/2011 11:30:38 AM
hahah. Can't wait for the show though. The clip I saw of Jon and Arya the other day looked great. Got the new TV ready and everything [Edited on March 3, 2011 at 11:34 AM. Reason : .]

I'm about 3/4 through A Game of Thrones now, switched from audiobook to just reading about 1/4 through. Fucking LOVING it. Holy fuck though, does this guy like the word "mummer" or what?

Well yeah I have taken every other date with a grain of salt until now. The other dates never seemed to be very concrete to me though. Just placeholder/dreamer dates if you will. Correct me if I'm wrong but I never saw dates in any real news announcement previously. This was a joint announcement between the publisher, Martin, and Entertainment Weekly. In other words, they made a big deal about this as opposed to some random date he posts on his blog or a date that Amazon lists on their site. The British publisher Voyager has also given a firm release date as well.http://shelf-life.ew.com/2011/03/03/dance-with-dragons-date/There is of course some risk there with the timing of the announcement and the status of the writing but I would have to think the publisher wouldn't want to make fools of themselves by getting him out there to promote a firm date if they weren't sure it was going to be met. I'm obviously being optimistic, but this is the first time I've actually let myself get optimistic that it is really getting published soon. Hopefully I'm not proven wrong...[Edited on March 3, 2011 at 3:46 PM. Reason : .]

First official "full" trailer: http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/03/03/game-of-thrones-new-trailer/I actually haven't watched this. I think I am at a point now though where I don't want to watch so it is all new to me when I watch it for real.

^ what an awesome idea! my roommate showed me that, she actually did the smell puzzle online to watch a secret trailer. she didn't have the package but figured out what smells went with what city and matched them on the website.
3/6/2011 5:48:16 PM
^That's what I did too. The "reward" was awesome Although now I'm trying to swear off watching anymore footage before the premier because I've been following the production for so long and seen so much of the trailer footage that I don't want to spoil too much haha.Everything I have seen though is just great. We'll see how it all comes together for full episodes but I have been extremely impressed with the footage overall. Everything has really looked very close to what I imagined in my head, minus Kings Landing which looks very different than how I imagined but should still be awesome.
3/7/2011 7:56:23 AM
Just finished the book, holy shit. Already about 20 pages into the second one. I just watched all of the videos up on HBO.com and I'm suuuuper psyched.
3/7/2011 7:15:57 PM
haha awesome. I'm glad you enjoyed it. That first book of the series was definitely the best fantasy-related book I had read in a long, long time.
3/7/2011 7:24:49 PM
The best part is that there is very little magic. There are waaaaaaaay too many long-running fantasy series where the main character accumulates more and more magical powers until he is godlike and unstoppable. It's a shitty pattern that everyone copies because everyone keeps buying the books. There are so many fantasy cliches than need to die.
3/7/2011 7:32:30 PM
^ Paging Robert Jordan
3/7/2011 9:12:10 PM
to be fair, i'd argue that while robert jordan certainly didn't invent the genre, he is certainly a cornerstone of that very cliche...and as such, can't really BE the clichegoodkind's sword of truth series was ridiculously similar to wot
3/8/2011 7:22:13 AM
I'd argue that Rand is nothing near God-like...so I don't know who you're talking about
3/8/2011 8:42:10 AM
^You're wrong, but it's not worth getting in to a nerd slap fight about it. Goodkind, Jordan, Orson Scott Cart, and I assume the vast majority of other writers employ the same tactics. The bottom line is the fat fuck GRRM's world should be appreciated for the near absence of magic.
3/8/2011 7:32:38 PM
^ It's true. ASOIAF is the first fantasy series of any kind for me, so of course there were things I was expecting based on fantasy stereotypes. The absence of magic is so complete that when something magical or supernatural or extraordinary DID happen, it was very jarring and unexpected for me. I've loved reading every book in the series so far, and I hope the ADWD date sticks.
3/8/2011 10:28:17 PM
here's the sneak peak from the online puzzle!!!Jon giving Needle to Arya!!!
3/15/2011 11:09:37 PM
didn't even see this thread, almost made one on my own, I'm not really a fantasy fan at all but the fact that hbo is making a serious series about one when they've been owning every other series they've made interests me
3/15/2011 11:40:01 PM
You should read the books. They rule.
3/16/2011 1:15:19 AM
when is this starting again?
3/21/2011 11:02:15 AM
April 17th. There is a 15 minute preview coming up soon (1st 15 mins of episode 1) but I'm probably going to skip that and just start with the full show April 17th.
3/21/2011 11:06:44 AM
i'm hoping camelot will tide me over until the 17thhttp://www.starz.com/originals/Camelot
3/21/2011 11:45:34 AM
nothing super exciting if you have been following the production at all but HBO put up a cast gallery here:http://www.hbo.com/game-of-thrones/index.html#/game-of-thrones/cast-and-crew/index.html
3/21/2011 11:49:38 AM
so then daenerys, queen cersei, and sansa are the ones to hope for nude scenes
3/21/2011 3:17:53 PM
Speak for yourself. I'm holding out for a Tyrion Lannister full frontal.
3/21/2011 3:47:32 PM
More like half frontal amirite?!?
3/21/2011 3:52:58 PM
I don't remember any situations where Sansa would be naked.
3/21/2011 6:01:16 PM
well don't underestimate hbo
