we all know what RW can do. and he has some great weapons around him (even without a proven running back). i just hope we can consistently get down the field without the 3-and-outs that we were prone to at times last year (esp. early in games)mike archer is going to show whether he has ANY level of competence as a DC based on:1)any improvement whatsoever in the secondary (i'm not holding my breath)2)whether he can put together a DL that can put some pressure on opposing qbs without WYoung

I'm not worried about the offense. RW returns with all his receivers. The O-line is young but talented, and they have some experience from last year. As long as they listen to the coaches and give us some time, we'll be fine again. The success of our unproven RB's depends on the strength of the O-line.I'm not worried about the DL either. Yeah Young and the rest of the starters are gone, but the replacements are veteran guys with experience. Not to mention Lemon is a star in the making. Irving and an experienced LB corps back up the line. The secondary is the only group that concerns me. I think our overall success comes down to their performance. It's not fair to them that they're all young and we're asking them to play like veterans, but if they can't stop anybody, we're doomed.

not because i'm a carolina fan, but that just has bad idea written all over it. i'd hate for him to fuck up his knee or get another concussion and lose out on a lucrative career

I'll be the first to say fuck you to anyone who isn't thrilled for him. Great news following what must have been a very hard day for him yesterday. I am trying to find his signing bonus/contract details.[Edited on June 21, 2010 at 9:46 AM. Reason : x]

^agreed. i honestly can't believe he's gonna play football. i have all the respect in the world for this guy. he will def be a wolfpacker that's forever loved and respected by the fans. class guy all around.

It would be awkward if Mike Glennon somehow managed to beat him out for the starting job (I can't imagine that happening).
6/21/2010 10:31:03 AM
Unless Glennon has become the football Rain Man, Wilson will start.
6/21/2010 10:41:54 AM
it would be hilarious if he did beat him out. RW is such a fan favorite that I think it would result in an uproar from the fanbase if he wasn't named the starter.
6/21/2010 12:14:31 PM
OK hold it. How the fuck can he do both? I thought once you signed with any pro sport you were off college anything.http://www.wralsportsfan.com/mlb/story/7823184/wrals story[Edited on June 21, 2010 at 2:05 PM. Reason : linkie]

He is no longer eligible for college baseball but he is eligible for football. Also, he cannot accept any endorsement deals.
6/21/2010 2:13:01 PM
I like all the people saying bad idea. It's been done numerous times.
6/21/2010 2:19:22 PM
he can do anything/everything he did before with football(even get a scholly).only thing that would screw it up is if he got an endorsement deal and/or "discussed" football deals with his agent.

My guess is that for RW to sign they probably went a bit overslot, though I suppose they could have traded off going overslot with allowing him to leave the short season club early for camp...
6/21/2010 2:29:56 PM
It would be incredibly rare for a team to go over the slot bonus for a fourth round pick, almost never happens. And if they did, it wouldn't be by more than a few thousand $bucks.
6/21/2010 2:37:22 PM
that is just flat out inaccurate. players drafted throughout the draft often get paid over the slot bonus, particularly if they have any leverage. incredibly common with high school seniors who have committed to playing college ball, college juniors with one more oppurtunity to enter the draft, and two sport atheltes. to say it almost never happens is just flat out wrong.
6/21/2010 2:59:13 PM
It's not incredibly common outside the first, maybe second round. And like I said, if they did go above the slot bonus, it wouldn't be by much.
6/21/2010 3:06:28 PM
it really is a lot more common than you think. nearly every team does it with several players drafted well after the first round pretty much on a yearly basis. these guys are typically drafted lower than their talent might otherwise suggest because of the risk of difficulty signing them to contracts due to various factors, mainly college commitments. if you really doubt this look up the pirates recent draft history and signings and you will see even one of the lowest spending of the major league franchises is willing to pay above slot to get the players they really want despite draft position.
6/21/2010 3:15:40 PM
http://buccofans.wikispaces.com/Draft+Pick+Bonuses#x2009Eyeballing it, I see about 15 out of 90 signees paid above the slot bonus going back to 2000That 16%, which, according to you, is the high end of the scale
6/21/2010 3:20:58 PM
16% is far more than incredibly uncommon as you have stated. thats about 1 out of 6. if that number is even close among major league teams that could be as 4-6 players per round getting paid over slot.

Nice article on Russell's minor league debut. Did pretty well, came through in the clutch w/ a 2-strike, 2-out single that drove in 2 runs. Then proceeded to steal a base and score.http://www.thenewstribune.com/2010/06/26/1242354/wilson-makes-a-splash-in-dust.html
