After watching this video (linked from the æ article "Retro") I got an idea to make a much better compilation video about the '80s, only this time about electronic music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56Fx9ksBr80Here are some ideas I have...1980Yellow Magic Orchestra - "Behind the Mask": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DSue36BpH8(hey, if the original video got to count "Cars" under 1980, I get to count this...they're both actually from 1979)1981Patrick Cowley - "Menergy": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46DiMfrz0bg1982Afrikaa Bambaataa and Soul Sonic Force - "Planet Rock": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_vLzsG2TCU1983Herbie Hancock - "Rockit": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nK0Pi4wC8HkCybotron - "Clear": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I280cxs2jvA1984Digital Emotion - "Go Go Yellow Screen": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClLYw2XZodkNewcleus - "Jam on It": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hXPu32FuE41985Freestyle - "Don't Stop the Rock": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfXKkNo7YZ8Mantronix - "Needle to the Groove": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LT4VgyfLPKk1986Marshall Jefferson - "Move Your Body": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAR8cq5Bl94Robert Owens - "Bring Down the Walls": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeYYG_2kYEs1987Mr. Fingers - "Can You Feel It": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLQscQ3cyoQRhythim Is Rhythim - "Strings of Life": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pahJh2r8Hg0Phuture - "Acid Tracks": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKbLI8EufNo1988D-Mob - "We Call It Acieed": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEdiOBz4zeMInner City - "Big Fun": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omfiVkkJ1OUThe KLF - "What Time Is Love": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frd5YmSjjIIHumanoid - "Stakker Humanoid": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lW8TCK7A0KcRob Base & DJ EZ Rock - "It Takes Two": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IBRbzf3Fws1989Tyree - "Turn Up the Bass": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHEde5U9pXsKariya - "Let Me Love You (Rebuilt)": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTs_GliroUYBlack Box - "Ride on Time": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lOb799cTxMFinal Cut with True Faith - "Take Me Away": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO3FUfs6iYALooney Tunes - "Just As Long As I Got You": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wSfpw2Y16s808 State - "Pacific 707": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HMt-42LAQENine Inch Nails - "Down in It": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrrEo3hZABUMeat Beat Manifesto - "Radio Babylon": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ILqfpDD6XEThis list is of course more heavily weighted toward the end of the '80s (nearly half of the 27 tracks came from '88 or '89, nearly a third from just '89) because that's when music was getting better; also I saw a similar video about the '70s but it would be a lot harder to make an electronic-music-themed video for that decade: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVRC5BnNg8A...and as for the '90s and later? There's enough material to make at least two compilation vidz about just 1997 using only breakbeat electronic music

i'm not sure what's electronic about "it takes two"but you could easily make an electronic-themed video about the '70s, you'd just have to get a bit more internationalneu!, devo, etc.
9/4/2010 7:26:20 PM
^reliance on loops and samplingAnyway I think I did get very international: YMO is Japanese, Digital Emotion is Dutch, Black Box is Italian, and D-Mob, The KLF, Humanoid (now known as the Future Sound of London), 808 State, and Meat Beat Manifesto are British; the rest are American. Then again the acts from neither the US nor the UK were tokens; the bulk of the good stuff comes out of those two nations, with the balance shifting to the UK during the '90s.On an unrelated note, finally the most underrated track ever by The Bird and the Bee is available on YouTube, "What's in the Middle" from Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future (2009): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmt97DAaE68[Edited on September 7, 2010 at 5:36 AM. Reason : ...and now for something completely different

I wish Radio 1 were available in the States, perhaps just an hour as part of the BBC World Service to follow The Strand.
9/20/2010 6:50:35 PM
you can get it on XM/Sirius, but it's syndicated (instead of being played in as it's aired GMT it's played in EST, maybe local but definitely at least EST so 12 noon broadcast there comes on here at noon when it's 5 PM in UK)
9/20/2010 7:34:32 PM
I have never had satellite radio; if I did I'd probably keep it on Sirius|XM Chill.

I thought I'd list the tracks that I think best represent each year of the '90s, which is IMO the best decade ever for music so far...1990 Suzanne Vega - "Tom's Diner (DNA Disciples Remix)": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXg5pOF2PvY1991 "Crazy" from Seal - Seal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Fc67yQsPqQ1992 Acen - "Trip II the Moon (Part II)": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfMlQJ5SeFo1993 The Prodigy - "Rhythm of Life": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-5idbKwbdc1994 "Ruiner" from Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtP_HnZgVGw1995 "Leave Home" from The Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7j-Ndccqaw1996 "Michael Jackson" from Fatboy Slim - Better Living Through Chemistry: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hB38uxAihE1997 "Busy Child" from The Crystal Method - Vegas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6twhXA1Gyw1998 "Take California" from Propellerheads - Decksandrumsandrockandroll: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd8WjeK8riE1999 "Finished Symphony" from Hybrid - Wide Angle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoV9d9y-DdQ

anyone subscribe and listen to the youtube channel MrSuicideSheep? puts together some very chill mixes. Uses some nice artwork and photography for the "video" portion of his mixes. Been really enjoying it lately. seems he chooses the track list, has it mixed by someone else, and then he publishes the final piece.http://www.youtube.com/user/MrSuicideSheep

OMG~♥♥♥https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNwBwYXS3f8Here, Dave demolishes the argument that electronic music doesn't require talent and somehow lacks "soul."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ywnAUDz-asHere, Dave talks essentially about how similar modern pop music is to "serious" electronic dance music.
