Solinari forgot to mention that he's spent all 10 of those years being a message board troll.

It's not trolling to provide the more widely accepted position on the importance of GPA. I understand that in this population it is not popular, but out there amongst the adults it is. I don't really want freshmen/sophomores who are looking for an excuse to procrastinate and slack anyway to see circle-jerk threads like this full of everyone saying that GPA isn't a big deal.

I've spoken in generalities in this thread for a reason. I do not want to be viewed as singling out any specific person on here. I am not trying to attack anyone.
4/15/2010 9:19:36 AM
That's not a defense, though. You can't just arbitrarily start talking about "mediocre" jobs and not back that up. You might as well start saying "IMHO" at the start of all of your posts, since that's about as much weight as they're gonna carry.
4/15/2010 9:25:55 AM
well, its obviously my opinion.and the same goes for those people in this thread with the opinion that gpa is not significant.
4/15/2010 9:41:16 AM
well, i'll be spending the rest of the day interviewing spring grads for engineer positions. I'll post my observations later.

me too

For whats is worth I've been on about 7-8 serious job interviews, and have NEVER been asked about a GPA. Once I had to provide proof of education and an acceptable form was me bringing in my actual diploma. I just feel like some like GPA, some like work experience, some like to see what the interviewee before deciding what carries the most weight, some like character better, some like to think you fit in and are loyal first and foremost, some like it if you seem trainable.... the list can go on forever... and ever. GPA does matter to some people, I agree, and some people it doesn't. Just hope you get lucky in any case no matter what you have, be it a high GPA, experience, or whatever combination of attributes you possess to sell yourself to the hiring party. Now what that said, sure a high GPA is better than a lower one, but its one thing that could possibly make a candidate with a lower GPA better, as long as they can do the job, is retention of that employee. A person with a high GPA might start thinking about grad school or getting another job after they get valuable experience, and its logical to think that one with the lower GPA would probably not think about grad school, and sticking with the job. I am sure someone out there thinks this way.[Edited on April 15, 2010 at 6:55 PM. Reason : /]

Haha, I guess so in terms of the comedy, but its plausible nonetheless.

If the GPA is low, highly unlikely to look at the resume. Otherwise, it's based on fit of the resume. And if it's a chick, automatically gets a look.

Just want to update since I started this. I graduate with EE and CPE last summer. When hard on the job search had couple interviews some companies asked for GPA while others don't, some even requested transcript . I got lucky with my current company in Huntsville, AL. They asked about GPA I told them wasn't the best but I have a good resume. They hire me. We design satellite and missile interceptors .

I'm glad you found success. You should start a follow up thread and talk about what you learned from your interview processes given your GPA and resume.

I had a shit GPA(2.8) with a great internship and got a job doing research and development of wind generators and PM motors. I work in a state of the art research lab and love my job. Don't give up hope kids.

I have never been asked my GPA for anywhere except Cisco. I applied to tons of large / small companies above and below my salary range.I'm Krallum and I approved this message.

After my first job, no one has asked and I don't have it on the resume.
4/1/2013 3:18:16 PM
I graduated with a perfect major GPA and I'm at Columbia for grad school. No company gave a FUCK about my grades. It's seriously all about experience; any job in the meantime will suffice and you can use it as a springboard to bigger and better things.
4/2/2013 11:41:31 PM
I never had to tell any prospective employers about my 2.57 cumulative GPA.it all worked out better than expected.

Damn, they'll just let any ole bum up in CSCO eh?

I probably applied to 25 companies in the past two months and only one even asked what my GPA was.
5/2/2013 7:29:08 PM
i started off college like i did high school... barely doing shit and still getting As then i hit my core classes and it took a couple years to figure out that maybe i should do shit.. My major GPA was wretched because i didn't do homework because the weekly homework assignments took about 10 hours per assignment per class.... and fuck that i had better things to do (like work a real job). Outside my major GPA is over a 4.0 (barely going to class) so i was intelligent... and i worked hard at work... but... couldn't bring myself to do the HW and then the classes that used HW problems for the exams.... fucked me hard... Do i wish i did things different back then ? yep... But now to all the people who are familiar with my work, i am respected and maybe even a little esteemed. I'll also tell you this... i didn't need to study for the PE exam to pass it on the first try... again you're going to say lazy or something like that... but actually dealing with the death of my mother.Now... if i were to switch jobs to one outside of my network should i be punished for a less then 3 gpa after 10 years of kicking ass and taking names in my line of work
5/3/2013 10:37:29 AM
As an employer, should I be worried that you didn't feel homework was necessary?
5/6/2013 10:22:23 AM
Not if I understood the material and can prove it on tests. Homework is busywork for suckers. If you want to employ me to do busywork then that's your fault.I'm Krallum and I approved this message.
5/8/2013 4:59:43 PM
^This is probably the dumbest thing I ever read. Homework is not busy work.

5/9/2013 5:24:45 PM
My job out of college was a more competitive company, <3.5 resumes go straight into the garbage. Then they weed people out based on internships, experience etc. But this was entry level, and they paid 20-40% more than the offers I got from other companies. But after being in the industry more than 3-5 years, employers barely care that you have a degree, it's entirely based on work experience.FYI if you're in school and your grades are terrible, transferring usually changes all your finished classes to credit-only, so you get to start with a fresh GPA and still have credit for all the classes you (barely) passed. After your transcript is laundered it's easy to get and keep a high GPA.
5/10/2013 12:24:38 PM
many programs limit the number of hours that can be applied to the degree program from transfer hours

I currently have a 4.0 for my master's. COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS: KEEP WORKING HARD OR HARDLY WORK?
5/21/2013 9:25:46 PM
your first job will pay you like a rock star for a 4.0... it's totally worth it for that... after your first job... it doesn't mean much. ohh btw... just got another job +15% $ with my 2.9... do i wish i worked harder in school... yep... if i went back to get my MBA would i make sure i had a 3.5 or higher... yep... But i came from a 4.5 in H.S. that i didn't have to do shit to maintain when i got to college so the whole homework work ethic wasn't there. ^^ some professors used hw problems i wasn't familiar with on the exam... it wasn't smart... but still... I'm intelligent enough to pass the FE and PE exams first time without studying.I also got a DWI in college but don't hardly drink anymore. I think i just watched too many college movies and wanted that experience rather than what i should have wanted... but i paid for my own school so it's not like i wasted mommy and daddy's money and i had a difficult major in mechanical engineering (my elective gpa is 4.28 or something nuts and i didn't do homework OR go to class with them)

8/22/2013 6:42:38 PM
I've heard all kinds of advice all over the place and I have to say that it only demonstrates your drive. If you've got a 4.0 without working for it... it's like having this 60 inch all features included flatscreen tv that doesn't work. You'll spend more time trying to make it work than you can actually enjoy having around. If you've got a 2.0 and you worked hard for that, it's like having a 24 inch "big box" analog tv... but at least it does what you need it to.What businesses are trying to get is that person who works hard and does what you need it to, and they having nothing to go on except pieces of paper that only represent a shadow of who you are and why you're the best for for their organization. That's why interns exist.
9/2/2013 11:56:08 PM
Many of the entry level job postings require a certain GPA (3.0-3.5) and I've heard of companies having it across the board for all employees.
2/5/2014 2:49:26 AM
In my experience most companies didn't ask me for my GPA, the ones that do are companies who routinely hire lots of grads each year and are very competitive (ie consulting firms). I had one smaller company as for my undergrad transcript and asked me to explain it even though I had a near 4.0 in my grad program. I thought it was a very odd request and it turned out to be the type of company I wouldn't want to work for anyways. Post undergrad I had two years work experience, a masters degree, and then two more years of work experience with a highly regarded firm and that clown wanted to talk about why I slacked off in psychology 101. Get that crap out of here.
2/7/2014 11:09:49 AM
I don't think our hr will even process a resume that has a gpa below a threshold. Only way to get a raiment through in that situation is referral orExperience
2/12/2014 12:53:31 PM
Trust me, a low(er) GPA will not keep you from making a lot of money. You just have to look around and skip over the companies that dwell on it. As long as you have a degree in hand, can interview well, and once you get a job be good at it and make people like you all will fall into place.
