chart was dead on for refund deposit
2/12/2010 7:08:19 AM
I filed for the 8k new home buyer credit and I didn't mail in my properly executed settlement statement with my return.Anyone else do this? I guess I should have read all the fine print but my tax software did not make it apparent that extra paperwork was necessary.Either way I am going to call them, but have you guys just been waiting for the request to provide it or sending it along after you realized it was required?
2/12/2010 8:54:51 AM
fuck you government. i owe 700
2/12/2010 10:03:28 AM
^that's probably not a bad thing assuming you paid at least $7000 in taxes last year. That means you got a free loan from uncle sam. If you paid less than $7000 in taxes, then uncle sam will assrape you and your family with penalties

So, I received my federal refund yesterday via direct deposit -- I was expecting $417 after finishing with Turbo Tax -- they deposited $663.Any advice? I'm sure I am probably supposed to report it somewhere, just can't track it down with my leet google skills.I could probably not say anything, but I have a feeling at some point in the future when they realize the mistake they would take back the difference and potentially charge me interest.
2/13/2010 1:06:04 PM
take a look at the copy of the 1040 you submitted. the refund amount is on line 72&73a. if you submitted a 1040ez its on there near the bottom (don't know what line).
2/13/2010 1:30:58 PM
The saved PDF version of my return also shows $417 as my Federal refund amount.
2/13/2010 1:34:22 PM
So..if I got a raise last year, why would they be taking out LESS of my federal withholdings if my withholdings didn't change? They did that on both the wife and my return, and now we owe a fucking $2,700 dollars to the feds
2/14/2010 11:10:59 AM
This is apparently a trend. The only explanation some of the accountants I talked to could come up with was that it was an attempt to stimulate the economy by providing citizens with additional revenue during the year. Of course, then you get hit with the tax bill at the end of the year.A lot of people simply don't pay attention to their withholding (guilty as charged) and / or assume adjustments in withholding are based on tax cuts.
2/14/2010 11:32:24 AM
So they "give you more of your own money" just so they can tax it all again at the end of the year?brilliant.

regarding the Making Work Pay credit, this is the response I got from TaxAct customer service
2/15/2010 10:10:41 AM
Regarding the conflicting reports ITT of what is necessary to get the FTHBC and/or what needs to be included for your submission to be accepted and refund expedited, here is my experience: I bought a house in July. Two weeks after closing I filed for the 8K credit using a 1040X on my 2008 return. I only included the explicitly requested forms. In November I got a request from the "examinations department", i.e. audit, asking for the closing statement or any combination of other papers which spoke to my identity, identity of the seller, closing date, etc. I quickly returned the requested information. I received the 8k, with a few hundred in interest, this past Friday. I would imagine that if one was in line to be audited as I was, your entire return, not just the 8k, would be similarly held up.[Edited on February 15, 2010 at 5:43 PM. Reason : ]

^This is why I encouraged you all to include those other documents when you intially file. Almost everyone of the 8k homebuyer credits is being examined. Unfortunately, there was initially a ton of fraud with the credit and they have gotten ultra strict.People are easily waiting 6 months for what should be at most a 6 week process.

I have a question regarding filing a North Carolina income tax return (Form D-400) as a part-year resident. I moved out of North Carolina during 2009. I am married, filing jointly. Do I have to provide a copy of my 2009 1040?

2/18/2010 12:42:40 PM
I'm a dumbass.I was so caught up about getting everything correct with a new sole proprietorship that I started this year, that I completely forgot about an extra W-2 for a bar that I worked at early last year. I've already filed and should be getting my return back pretty soon. Should it be difficult to go back and add the W-2??
2/18/2010 12:55:17 PM
Wait until you get your refund and everything and then file a 1040X. You'll have to snail mail it because they don't do e-file for ammended returns, it will also take much longer to get the additional refund (assuming it works out that way). If you end up having to pay for whatever reason, then I think you're ok as long as you send it before April 15th (after which there is a penalty).http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040x.pdfhttp://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040x.pdf

^^^Just did it real quick on turbotax...and here is my only question:My refund increased by a couple hundred bucks or so. I haven't gotten my first refund check in, but it should be getting in pretty soon. Will they send me a check with the difference or a new check with the whole total? Because as I was doing my addendum, it had the whole total on there.
2/18/2010 1:21:06 PM
It looks like they changed the format for the 1040X for this year. I did one last year (fthb credit) and the form seemed easier than this (there were columns, one for old amounts, one for new amounts). They send you a check for the difference. If you look at the PDF line 17 of 1040x reads "Overpayment, if any, as shown on original return" which would be your original refund amount. If you look at the calculations line 20 (and 21) should equal the difference:(New total federal tax withholdings [line 16]) - (Overpayment [original refund, 1040 line 72, 1040x line 17]) - (new total tax liability [line 10]) = couple hundy new refund [line 20][Edited on February 18, 2010 at 2:46 PM.
