e34 and e39 M5s are some of my favorite cars. Other than that, I'm all about some e36 M3 action and the e30 325i. BMW does/did make great sports sedans, but as with the rest of "premium" manufacturers, they seem to be loosing a bit of focus. None the less, since AUDI's probably not going to make anything RWD with 50/50 weight distribution anytime soon, somebody who's in the market for a fun to drive sport sedan has limited options. Let's not lose all hope however, Porsche seems to be on a kick to keep making their cars lighter. The 996 was a good bit lighter than the 993, the 997 GT3 has kept it's weight low, and they're still not using aluminum chassis'. BMW could stand to use more aluminum also, maybe that'll be the silver lining of the fuel standards, lighter cars? Oh I hope so...

Saw that new BMW on the road the other day, the 535i Gran Turismo. Wow, that thing's like a German version of the Pontiac Aztek. They say a sucker's born every minute...

BMW's continually moving away from what they're known for: Being the best driving experience in class. They lost their styling way long ago; it'll be very disappointing to think that they're now losing their handling edge to Audi of all companies!
6/30/2010 9:11:27 AM
^ well, audi is THE logical choice to lose to if they are gonna lose to a company in terms of handling... what else is there?not MB (straightine kings)not VWnot Jaguar (actually, the new 510 hp XFR gives very good competition to the germans)not Lexusnot Infiniti
6/30/2010 12:01:35 PM
Infiniti's with the sports package usually handle just as good or slightly better than a comparable BMW. (skid pad, slalom, bracking, etc....) BMW usually has a better feel though. Infiniti's can be twitchy and ride bad on rough roads.

^^Front heavy FWD based Audi? No I'd expect it to be almost anyone else (save Lexus).

2011 BMW M-Sport 5 Series revealedhttp://www.autoblog.com/photos/2011-bmw-m-sport-5-series/full/
7/1/2010 10:59:43 AM
Well, looks like you're not going to refurbish e34s, BMW, so I have another suggestion to easily boost credibility in your current products. It looks to me as if you erred a bit too close to the 7 series with this new 5. The 1 series is practically the same weight as the 3 series, while the 3 series now approaches the size of what the 5 series offered a decade ago. And it appears that the next 3 series will only get larger and more powerful, while the 1 series future is dubious and leaves no logical name for the supposed mini-related fwd city car we keep seeing renderings of. So.. Don't fight your urge to change tack. That will take too long. Just move the nameplates down. When the new 3 series arrives, the hatred of the 135's truncated styling will die down as it will be by far the lightest and smallest rwd inline-6 powered BMW. Also, time naturally takes the shock out of new things. When that occurs, sell the new 3 for one year, and when the press derides you for having lost your way, offer new m-badged styling kits for every model, jarring enough to rattle public familiarity with the lineup of cars and simultaneously move the nameplates. 1 becomes 3, newest likely-bloated 3 becomes 5, latest 5 that looks like a pretty bitchin 7 actually becomes the 7, and then you can crown the lwb 7 as the kingly "9" series. And the 6 series can then logically be renamed the 8 series. And now "1" series is free for the embarrassing arrival of a somehow necessary fed city car. I hope you weren't planning to call it an isetta. If so, go in the back and repeatedly whip yourself if the car that is coming is nowhere near a novation of that brass balls design.Tada! Now, without decontenting or clever restructuring or managerially righting the listing ship of your performance cred, all of your models dramatically undercut the cost of their logical competitors. And you're even free to replace the 1 series with a bigger car so that you can figure out how to get 4 doors on that chassis or the one that replaces it. While you're at it, get a new goddamn z8 back in the lineup. Those suckers are not depreciating fast enough, and I want one. You need to release a half-assed replacement to tarnish the z8's memory and make them depreciate into my otherwise-c6-shopping hands. If that's too radical, how about a few years before the full 3-to-5 transition by increasing model numbers by one and have an even-numbered lineup. 1 is 2, 3 is 4, 5 is 6, 7 is 8. When that causes outcry over nostalgic loss of the odd numbers, then 'restore' the odd numbers by stepping the numbers up again instead of stepping them back down. Same effect, just slower. :-)

I take back what I said about the megacity if this really is indicative of what will reach production. It's rwd, with batteries under the floor and the body is molded (?) carbon fiber!http://www.evo.co.uk/news/evonews/253840/bmw_megacity_project_unveiled.htmlhttp://www.evo.co.uk/news/evonews/253840/bmw_megacity_project_unveiled.html
