Unless we go 0-for-season or Sid rapes a baby at half court, there's no way you can really be upset about anything this season.
11/12/2009 8:37:57 PM
I think its important to remember that much better teams than ours have lost season openers in the past to sub-par competition.
11/12/2009 8:40:21 PM
Are you kidding me? This is rec league.

VICTORY!!!!!!!!
11/12/2009 8:59:47 PM
This is a good win. Some of their players were actually recruited by real colleges. And I think they have organized practices too.

GOOD-Javi almost with a triple-double. 8 rebounds is crazy considering he's the smallest guy on the court-Smith is unstoppable. If he doesn't get it to go in the first time, he'll get it back and put it in-Maybe it was the competition, but our defense looked really good. We broke out a 2/3 zone I've never seen before-Vandenburg had 4 blocks that I counted. Not bad-Horner can indeed shoot. Career high in points-Mays made a few big shots-We didn't play FarnoldBAD-We didn't shoot for shit from 3 (3-16). Wood and CJ were especially off. If we're going to win, those guys have to make shots-We were saved by free throws, and still didn't shoot them well-Smith will play this entire year in foul trouble-Running offense?[Edited on November 12, 2009 at 9:44 PM. I concur with those points posted. Wood is going to have a hard time getting open shots come ACC time unless he learns to create some on his own. Didn't see enough of Painter to get an impression. Davis will be the next JT - plays a few minutes, doesn't do much, but will have some redonkulous play every now and then. Vandenberg isn't quite as useless as I thought he would be although he's still going to get pushed around alot in a couple months.Anyone know why Degand didn't play?
11/12/2009 9:24:38 PM
Good outline Maverick1024. Is it me or does it seem Mays looks more comfortable in the two spot than the one? When he was on the floor without Gonzalez, he forced a lot passes which resulted a couple of turnovers. Either way I am happy with the win. Go Pack!

the UNDEFEATED NC State Wolfpack!
11/12/2009 9:30:57 PM
Just got back. Not overly impressive, but with this team a win is a win is a win.- Smith was, obviously, awesome. Far and away our best player. And a great stroke from the line.- Javi was under control and pretty good... But he REALLY needs to make his open 3's. NO ONE is going to play him on the perimeter later in the season.- Vandenberg won't serve much of a purpose playing a major team, but his size presents real problems on the inside for mid and low-major caliber players. He needs to learn not to foul.- Josh Davis does NOT need to be playing. At all.- Mays had some points, but I thought he looked awful. Probably our worst guard tonight in terms of decisions and bad passes. Not too impressed.- Wood is going to be a lights out shooter when he gets space. Beautiful stroke.- If Georgia State is a top third team in their conference, their conference has to be one of the worst in the country. They had MAYBE one competent player and LOVED to foul about 75 feet from the basket. I swear half of the fouls they had came 40 feet out or further.** Oh and can we get that dude at HT to walk on? Maybe throw him some screens and let him bomb away?[Edited on November 12, 2009 at 9:32 PM. Reason : x]

^Agreed about Mays. There's something just off when the ball is in his hands -- he can't create offense for anyone other than himself. Thankfully he can make free throws. I still think he needs to play SG. As far as Javi, the guy can obviously make 3's (led the league in 3pt % last year by a wide margin). They just weren't falling tonight. If Davis does play, it needs to very limited. Go in, get an offensive rebound, take a charge, play good defense. Not a touch-the-ball-regularly role.[Edited on November 12, 2009 at 9:37 PM. I didn't even see Degand at the game tonight... not sure what's up with that
11/12/2009 9:40:11 PM
We would have lost this game last year. We weren't shooting well and our defense pulled this game out. This was a very experienced team that played a very slow deliberate game. Also supposedly a guard oriented team that thrives on driving into the paint (a team that would have killed us last year).
11/12/2009 9:42:21 PM
Best note from this game...Smith 10-12 from the FT line. Just imagine the close games we could have won last year if our big men were putting up FTs like that.
Second best note from this game: Only 9 TO's. Javi with only one that I counted. And that's coming against an overly agressive defense.
11/12/2009 9:43:46 PM
There were a couple of quick stretches in the game where the team showed some potential. Other than that there certainly seemed to be some kinks that need to be worked out. It did seem like Sidney played around with the lineup quite a bit.
11/12/2009 10:02:30 PM
^4 I'm pretty sure we wouldn't have lost this game last year either. Sounds like we're at about the same level we left off at, no real improvement but no big decline either.
11/12/2009 10:09:30 PM
The same level as last year while playing 4 freshman, most with significant minutes - I'll take that if the improvement also shows throughout the year.

Decent crowd for the first game on a nasty night. Tracy got to the basket with ease but struggled on defense. Jordan will probably come in handy at least a few times this season. He's a decent defender and he's pretty scrappy. He had a few defensive rebounds and quickly whipped an outlet pass. Javi played well ,almost the triple double. Mays never looked in sync, but had a good 2nd half. Wood looked comfortable even though his shot wasn't falling. He had a couple layups in traffic. Lowe ran javi/mays/williams, wood, horner, & vandenburg for a few stretches.[Edited on November 12, 2009 at 10:41 PM. Reason : ]

I'm gonna break that one down:guard play was weak as advertised -- everyone has said thishorner finally hit his first 3 since freshman year but he tried really hard -- Really hard? He was 1/2wood who i had high hopes for pulled up for multiple 3s with no one under the basket one on fast break with a clear path to the basket -- That's pretty much his game, though. And you can't expect a kid to make all the right decisions in his first game.painter seemed worthless for the most part -- Fucking 9 minutessmith looked good but not great liked to foul too much -- Yeahjordan was 7 feet tall and none of the 6' 2" comp could post him up -- What the shit does this even meanwhere were degand? thomas? others -- Did you read the post above about Degand? Do you know anything at all about Thomas?i usually hold out hope for a few games but it is going to be hard this yearFucking seriously? What hope could you possibly have for this season? This is one of the most clueless posts I've ever read, man.
