This is from the foothills of Mount Diablo in my parents neighborhood. The neighborhood is about 650 feet above sea level from what I recall. First time it has snowed since 1992 or something that low.

Leatherbark. So only 2 buildings over. Never been to snowshoe though, as I just started snowboarding last season, so I don't really know how far that is.

Leaving for Snowshoe today. Conditions are gonna be crappy as the last warm spurt of the effin season decided to happen right now. Gonna try to get out there anyways tho.

Maybe I just never paid attention to women's snowboarding, but damn. These chicks can ride and most of them are good looking.

There's a few others on Hulu plus a couple of men's comps. It's getting me all pumped up. Too bad I live in the Southeast.

Weekend looks good and cold. Upslope snow showers at the worst. Storm of the century at best.

I'm not exaggerating, thats what one of the weather maps I saw was showing. (1 of many)

I don't really know anything about weather except to know that predicting how much it will snow in NC is almost impossible several days out and most of the time they say it's going to snow it doesn't.

Ray should have it all figured out by tomorrow or Friday though. http://www.booneweather.com

What I am able to predict is the conditions at NC slopes: Saturday: Mostly crowded with an 80% chance of jeans and starter jackets.

Snowshoe this weekend.
There may be no water, as the well was either broke or dry last weekend. It's all good though.

Ironically, I think it'll be snowing in NC and VA as I make my way to Snowshoe tomorrow. Thank goodness for 4x4. I think they're calling for 6-8" of freshness at the mountain though. Can't wait.

^^^ haha, yeah. that's what i hate most about southeast/mid-atlantic skiing...you spend more time dodging dumbasses who are making every effort to ski out in front of you and get flattened than you do actually skiing enjoyably.

Yeah, that and it takes 3 hours to get to the top of the mountain and only 9 and a half seconds to get to the bottom.

Snowshoe was crazy Saturday morning...
Or so I heard.

The drive there was absolutely nuts. Worst visibility I've ever driven in. I could barely tell where the road was most of the time and could maybe see 30 feet in front of me. Wreck after wreck, two jack-knifed tractor trailer rigs; one of which left us just sitting in park for about an hour while they cleared it. Ran over a fallen tree on 39 outside of Marlinton. Crazy sketchy driving crossing the mountains. Finally got to the cabin at about 2:30 a.m. in the worst blizzard of the decade. Over a foot had accumulated by that point. It was very

The next morning the ~18" of snow had stuck my 4x4 4Runner and my buddy's 4x4 Suburban which was on snow tires. We couldn't get out of the driveway at the cabin which was a pretty steep hill. Shoulda parked one at the top of the hill before it started snowing. We were about 10 miles from the slopes. His brother came and picked us up at about 2:00 and we got in some riding, but it was already packed and rutted. Crashed at his place on the mountain Saturday night and spent a couple of hours towing the trucks out today. Made great time coming back though.

The guy we stayed with Saturday night and his friend are in a bunch of scenes in the latest video on Snowshoes website...One of them ate it pretty good at the :46 mark and the other ate it at the 1:00 mark: http://video.snowshoemtn.com/flash/player/

I tried calling you, Skack, as I knew you were up there. Too bad you missed much of the skiing. I have a feeling after day 1 at Jackson Hole, you'll be tuned up I'm actually considering splitting up the group on the first day, and those who want to go to Grand Targhee to warm up (me included) will go there with the rest to Jackson Hole.

As far as southeast skiing in December goes, it was pretty good. The mountain wasn't 100% open, but they're getting there. Only two runs on the Highlands were open and the park was closed, but I've seen weather in the 50s and bare spots on one open trail this time of year in the past, so I'll take what I can get. There was still some remnants of powder, although most was packed. I did sink groin-deep into some when walking back up the side of the slope to ride a kicker we built - proof that they did actually get some significant precip, close to three feet.

I think it's probably the better of the 'local' mountains (excluding snowshoe, of course), if only because they have more ski-able acreage than Beech, Sugar, etc.

Is it worth going? That depends how much you like riding. I'd go every day in half an inch of slush. It's not Jackson Hole, that's for sure.

What's everyone else's southeast hill of choice?

i have this problem...it's tough to get off work and go skiing at times other than holidays, and if I can, and I can pick & choose when I can take the leave, I'm much more inclined to do it when I have my daughter in town (and she isn't old enough to ski yet).

however, i don't really even feel like bothering with anywhere that isn't out west during a holiday, as it will be so crowded that it's not worth it. Most places in the east are so crowded that you can barely ski on any normal weekend--I just end up pissed off and frustrated, just like I do in my sports car or motorcycle with a bunch of traffic in my way on a great road.

I've skied MLK weekend before at Snowshoe, and it's a clusterfuck like I can't even describe. Anyone ever done any east coast skiing over the long New Year's weekend? Is it a total waste of time as well, or is it better? I'm hurting for some mountain time...I was in Iraq all last winter, and I'd really like to go at least once this year.

We are 3 couples staying in a condo. We haven't made any plans other than bringing our own liquor, beer, champagne, food, etc. I don't know if snowshoe is going to extend their hours or not either. I know Whitetail is keeping their slopes open until 1am for new years eve so hopefully snowshoe does something similar.

So it looks like odds are good that I'll be doing some skiing later this week...probably leave Wednesday PM, and come home on Sunday. Leaning strongly towards something in the Lake Tahoe area, maybe Squaw Valley.

[Edited on December 28, 2009 at 10:00 PM. Reason : if not Tahoe, then probably CO...Keystone/Copper/Breck/Steamboat/Butte/Telluride/etc]

^^Snowshoe does not have nigh skiing but Silver Creek does. Maybe Silver Creek will extend their hours but I'd imagine that Snowshoe itself will close the slopes at 4pm. Afterall, you need lights for night skiing and I'm pretty sure they don't have any

Slopes close around 4:30 right now. Your Snowshoe pass is good at Silver Creek though, so just hop the bus and ride down there.

thats what I mean by snowshoe night skiing...because its one and the same. When you buy a full-day lift ticket its for 8:30am - 4:30pm at snowshoe and 4:30pm - 9 (i think 9) at silver creek which is a free shuttle ride over. Still part of the same mountain resort.

Had to buy new skis. After this weekend, my boots felt really lose and wasn't giving me nearly enough control over my skis since my foots wobbling around in the boot. I've had my current set of boots/skis for about 10 years. Things sure have changed a lot though!
