i love him. he's the fucking best.

kanye is 100% himself at all times, no matter how delusional, driven, and insane that may be. it's why his records are gleefully all over the place. it's why he can wear diamond masks and put jesus in his show and do synth pop ballad albums and sample richard james. the dude rules.

I hear what he's saying in that sway interview, and don't wholly disagree with it.
It is unfortunate that he chose the harshest and most ignorant way to get his point across. It makes the whole thing hard to listen to. And there is a really high signal to noise / substance to bullshit ratio that turns almost everyone off.

the main problem with his attitude is that he absorbs everything he hears

for example, i don't think he reads what people say about him on the internet, but i think when someone asks about that in an interview, what he hears is "200 million people on the internet say they hate you" and what comes out in his response is an emotional reaction to that statement, even if it's not accurate/not applicable in the moment

he views typical celebrity bullshit as an earnest attack, and combined with the fact that he is indeed trying to do something larger with every facet of his art, he feels backed into a corner on behalf of his views and his art at all times

I will admit that I haven't seen that sway interview in a long time...since shortly after it happened, and can't remember all of the details.
From what I remember though, he was saying:

He is trying to go beyond just being a rapper.
Which is true.

Doing that through his art requires next level thinking, trend setting, and exploring new areas.
Yep, that's also true.

There's a lot of stress and criticism because of this that not many people experience.
Yeah, duh.

And in response to sway trying to offer constructive criticism he flew off the handle. But I think what he was trying to say was that sway just didn't understand what he was going through, and thus couldn't possible have the answers.
Yeah, true.

Again, I think he said all of this in the absolute worse way possible though.

A clothing line, and making music that isn't what most would consider rap in the traditional sense. Those are the examples that roll off the top of my head.

It's kinda weird to think Kanye is griping about 13 million, when Microsoft just spent $2.5 billion on mine craft. Facebook spent $19 billion on WhatsApp.

lol, last year I went to the Kanye and Kendrick Lamar concert. Kanye laid down on stage and bitched/sang about his problems for 25 minutes at one point. He was wearing a sparkly mask, and he lookedlike his breath stunk.

IMHO it was an immature response to failing to break into the fashion industry. He bad mouthed a lot of people in his rant. In his eyes it has to be someone else's fault that his designs didn't gain traction. I can see how that sort of brevity can be helpful for entrepreneurs in some situations, but I see no indication that he has done any inner reflection as to why his designs may not have succeeded. Did he really spend time studying fashion and design to come up with an innovative and stylish line, or does he just think that if he spends enough money he should be able to slap his name on anything and expect the world to appreciate it?

There are plenty of people who have worked harder and spent more time studying design and fashion who will never make it, but they don't have the luxury of using their fame as an entertainer to spew garbage about those who have enjoyed success.

^^ Drake doesn't become Drake if 808s and Heartbreak never comes out

(and that's the Kanye album that most thought was a mis-step, yet it's been hugely influential)

At the very least, Kanye is an extremely prolific producer.

He just doesn't yell out MIKE WILL MADE IT on every song for which he had production involvement.

gawker made a pretty shitty ranking of all kanye west's songs. how shitty, you may ask. this shitty:

64. We Major

63. Roses

62. Homecoming

61. Crack Music"

i mean...it's somebody's opinion of their favorite kanye songs. so i can't be too hard on them...but come on. "we major" being one of his worst and that damn "lost in the world" track being one of his best? really hard for me to respect that list and the writer of it.

besides, any list that doesn't just outright rank all of 808s at the very bottom is a bad list imo.

The deifying of this guy that some people are doing ITT is actually disturbing. You'd think that there actually was a god, and this guy was actually his son. Instead of him just being a talented rapper/producer/whatever.

Kanye will always be an enigma to me. I dont give damn about all these interviews nowadays. if you look back at his early interviews in his early career him being egotistical was the only thing that got him thru the door. Jay Z wanted no parts of him. It's funny to me now that he wants to be "beyond a rapper" cause earlier he wanted to be so bad to be a rapper.

I thought at first he was hip hops messiah ( i know he thinks this) He was the bridge between underground afro centric rap and mainstream "bling bling" rap. Then something....happen...I think it was his mother's death. he drowned himself in alcohol and strippers. however I think "My twisted dark fantasy" is his best album

I still love his music despite him. Kanye pandora radio station is always on lock

actually he said multiple fucking times that it was his fault and that he "didn't know enough" about fashion because it was hard to balance it with hip hop, but that he was trying.

Of course he did.

Ya, you like it so much you have no idea what it's called.

And if you people could get past his taylorswifty incidents for two seconds and actually listen to him or use a little critical thinking you'd realize how incredibly subversive he is.

Is it not reasonable to "hate" someone for being a pompous asshole?

I think he's really good at making beats, but that's about it

He's definitely not on the Beatles / James Brown level that some of you want to put him on as far as impacting music
