You can just request an invitation from the Google Voice site. It takes like five days, or at least it did for me.
8/4/2009 7:40:25 PM
Yeah, I signed up last thursday, got my invite last night.

I had to mod my pap2. I got it from ebay and it's a complete piece of shit. It overheated in 15min and then stopped functioning, making me troubleshoot for hours for no reason. Long story short, put a heatsink on the proc and cut out the shit blocking the vents.
8/14/2009 2:45:46 AM
it's not even worth it anymore. Gizmo5 turned into jewish bait and switchers and calls are limited to 3 minutes now.
8/14/2009 3:04:36 AM
if you initiate the call with google voice, it's unlimited
8/14/2009 8:28:20 AM
so gizmo is a complete piece of shit. they're completely overloaded. I now pay callcentric $7.50 a month and have access to 911. unfortunately I only have unlimited incoming calls and have to use a browser to initiate calls. This isn't much of a problem with the 2 places I'd use it in my house having computers in them and my ps3 having a nice keyboard connected.

http://lifehacker.com/5355357/I don't know about you guys, but I'm pretty excited about this addition. This basically means free texting as long as you have push email on your phone.
9/9/2009 8:47:28 AM
Got my invite - this is pretty cool
10/3/2009 12:21:17 AM
it's already free texting if you have a phone with internet
10/3/2009 7:42:32 AM
Texting should already be free - it costs carriers fractions of cents for messaging
10/3/2009 11:02:23 AM
fractions of cents * millions of customers * millions of messages = millions of dollars
10/3/2009 11:03:56 AM
10/3/2009 12:06:27 PM
yeah texting is a real mess with gvoice because it doesnt integrate with the phone's contacts and so conversation tracking is hard on phones and texting new people whbose 406 number you may not have saved yet is tough
10/3/2009 1:11:34 PM
a guy on xda wrote a winmo app that does that because google didnt even release a winmo client
10/3/2009 3:04:00 PM
really? do you remember what it was called?

10/3/2009 6:35:15 PM
fair enough, replace that 2nd to last millions with dozens to hundreds
10/3/2009 6:39:49 PM
more like the carriers charge way more than texts cost because thats what customers are willing to pay for.
10/3/2009 9:03:00 PM
you use the word "willing" very casually
10/3/2009 10:12:59 PM
i dont know anyone who texts less because theyre afraid of running outso yea, they charge what they do because they CAN. it isn't enough to influence the average person.
10/3/2009 11:49:02 PM
um i know PLENTY of people that watch their text quotas and ask not to be texted if they're close to their limit. maybe your friends are richer than mine...
10/4/2009 10:52:50 PM
I thought everyone had unlimited texts? I don't know what I would do, my cycle resets on the 22nd and I've already used 700+[Edited on October 5, 2009 at 9:47 AM. Reason : ]
10/5/2009 9:46:53 AM
yeah i seriously haven't heard anyone say anything about watching their minutes or texts or anything in yearsi, too, though everyone pretty much had unlimited
10/5/2009 9:51:15 AM
fuck, i have poor friends.
10/5/2009 10:09:27 AM
I just got signed up for google voice and I'm trying to figure out what I can do with this that's of any use to me1) I can call anyone in the US for free for as long as I want, who cares, I already have a cellphone plan that has no roaming nationwide, no long distance, and virtually unlimited minutes so this isn't of any of use to me2) Free SMS, again who cares, I have unlimited SMS on my cellphone3) It will ring all of my phones and transcribe my voicemails, not interested, I only have one phone, my cellphone. Even if I did have other phones that would require me to give out a new number to everyone that has my number and then my voicemails would no longer work with the visual voicemail feature of my phone plus I would have some people sending texts to me GV number while some would still send them to my cell number and it would just be a messSo what can I do with this that's of any use, what is all the hype about? I do travel internationally a few times a year, is there any way I can use this to make and receive free VoIP calls internationally on my cell via wifi?
10/7/2009 3:13:37 PM
I use my personal cell phone for business and this affords me a more professional approach regarding voicemails, call screening, and a no weekend ring schedule.
10/7/2009 3:17:59 PM
i agree, for me personally its not worth the hassle to use google voice. maybe i'm just lame but most communications come to me via e-mail. the people who used to call me too much i've told them to just email me and i don't get that many calls.
10/7/2009 6:59:17 PM
^^^ why did you sign up to begin with? It tells you pretty much everything you can do with it before you even request an invite.
10/7/2009 10:09:14 PM
^My thoughts exactly. I actually had the whole "Why did you even waste an invite if you're just going to bitch about every feature?" speech typed out but I decided not to post it. It's not like the service hasn't been floating around for two years or anything.
10/8/2009 12:30:45 AM
Does anyone happen to have an extra invite link that they haven't tied to a google account yet? Trying to get one for my buddy and I used up the spare I had just recently.
10/8/2009 2:05:38 PM
No unused invite links?
10/14/2009 10:10:42 AM
Last time I checked users haven't got invites to pass out. My friend signed up for the beta and got an invite in about a week.
10/14/2009 10:39:12 AM
Yeah, someone would have had to leave the invite link in their inbox. I retract my request though, I don't really need one anymore.
10/14/2009 10:42:50 AM
They're slowly giving out invites to people. Supposedly started yesterday but eventually everyone currently using google voice should get 3 invites.
10/14/2009 1:14:36 PM
haha. apparently the voicemail transciptions are being indexed and shown in google searches. http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/19/google-voice-voicemails-appearing-in-public-search-results/
10/19/2009 11:38:29 AM
they updated that engadget article"Update: Google says it's changed how shared messages are indexed and made available to public searches, so we're hoping this was just a one-time thing."
10/19/2009 1:00:45 PM
But not before TechCrunch could make a best of post hahahttp://www.techcrunch.com/2009/10/19/the-best-of-the-google-voice-public-messages/

Google Voice Offers Voicemail Without Changing Your Numberhttp://lifehacker.com/5390308/google-voice-offers-voicemail-without-changing-your-numberNote: Sprint is currently rolling out the ability to enable free call forwarding. Until that is completed, this feature may not work or you may be charged every time someone leaves a voicemail.
10/27/2009 2:19:16 PM
How is this different from just forwarding your voicemail on your phone to GV? I've been doing that for weeks.
10/27/2009 2:21:06 PM
at what point will 'phone service' mean you just get a data plan from a provider and all voice calls are over VOIP? or will that never happen.
10/27/2009 2:21:49 PM
^^ that's what it does.
10/27/2009 2:51:59 PM
I would say at the very least your google voice account will recognize your no answer forward and directly greet the caller rather than put them through another set of 5 or 6 rings. I'm sure there are other advantages to having your existing number integrated into the service rather than having some sort of potential loop set up? I haven't messed with the service enough to really know because of the .20c/min forward sprint imposes. Personal # -> Seamless GV Account ServicesvsPersonal # -> GV # -> Personal # -> GV Account
10/27/2009 10:48:56 PM
Rejoice!
10/28/2009 10:42:29 AM
that's a nice move on sprint's parti'd still like to keep the GV number completely so i can feel free to switch to another carrier without fear of having to tell everyone my new number
10/28/2009 12:56:55 PM
Yeah I just never have good luck with quality of the VoIP calls. Always seems to be an obnoxious delay.
10/28/2009 1:34:39 PM
really? i don't have that many issues except when you first pick up a call, it takes a second or two for the connection to be made i think.and oh yeah, i forgot to mention adding gvoice to my sprint pick 3 - all my calls are free lol, so definitely not going back to using my sprint number
