what misstatement? That GEITNER helped pressure banks in to taking money they didn't want, and then OBAMA wouldn't let the banks pay the money back until after much bitching and squirming?
8/17/2009 8:06:32 PM
That isn't what you said in your previous post. You were talking about the second half of TARP, not the first half, that was initiated under the previous administration. What is this "bitching and squirming" you're talking about? The banks that were found well capitalized by the not stressful stress test were allowed to pay it back, those that weren't can't.No bitching. No squirming. You have no argument.
8/17/2009 8:25:40 PM
so, in other words, banks weren't always allowed to pay the money back if they wanted to do so...
8/17/2009 8:46:45 PM
How about you name some of the banks and we can talk about their situation if you want.

Olbermann Launches A War Against Glenn Beck In Honor Of Van JonesSep. 8, 2009
9/8/2009 12:54:19 PM
It's not really difficult to find dirt on Glenn Beck. Just watch his show.
9/8/2009 12:57:03 PM
^ And? When last I checked, Beck didn't hold public office--though it is a congressionally unvetted office concerning the position at issue.
9/8/2009 1:01:38 PM
What difference does that make? Beck is a public figure because he made himself into one. He's just as legitimate a target as anyone in government. We're way beyond the vetting thing.
9/10/2009 9:46:32 AM
Epic fail ... itt ...I'm Flummoxed. The first I heard about this (non)issue was a couple of days ago, at a coffee shop. The owner was worried about the impending communist takeover of the government - with all of the "czars" as proof (despite the fact it's only fox news et. al. that calls them "czars" - for the communist implications effect).Taken by itself there is no traction beyond the surface (propaganda) level. But, taken with the "death panel" and "I will not have the president indoctrinate my school children" scandals I can only conclude that the right wing has nothing better to offer than to throw mud on the walls and see if anything sticks.
9/10/2009 10:38:29 AM
what they're doing is trying to stir up enough irrational fear and hatred, that one of their more unstable batshit loonies starts hearing enough voices in their head to make an assassination attempt.
9/10/2009 11:04:30 AM
the term "czar" does not refer to communism. communists overthrew the Czar of Russia, but it doesn't matter what these people are called. The thing here is that Obama has circumvented the separation of powers and checks and balances required by the constitution by appointing a wide range of people with broad authority that do not answer to Congress and are not confirmed by anyone other than him. It's a blatant power grab that should not be overlooked.

This person seems far too extreme in her position. I wonder if we could use her appointment to extrapolate where the administration is eventually going to go when it comes to gun control. This is an obvious slap in the face to the nation's outdoor sportsmen.

I can not let this thread die. If nothing else it's an example of the current Republican, "Exaggerate everything and throw it all on the wall to see what sticks" mentality - hoping the public will remember only that something stuck for a while, but forgetting exatly how stupid it was.bcsawyer:

From that noted right-winger[/sarcasm] Senator Russ Feingold:Russ Feingold: Czars have too much power10/6/09
10/8/2009 12:06:27 AM
10/8/2009 12:13:41 AM
Somehow I suspect you're missing Feingold's rhetorical point.
10/8/2009 12:22:01 AM
yes, well the problem is Feingold's "rhetorical point" is based on a false premise, and is therefore invalid. They are not called "czars" officially, except for by people like Feingold and the media. Now, if he asked "the public wants to know why all these unelected officials are advising the President on specific topics of which they President may not be an expert in himself", then.... the answer is evident in the question.
10/8/2009 12:56:22 AM
^ Wow. The fact that you took issue with one quotation and let the fact that the Obama administration didn't even send a rep to a congressional hearing--about congressional oversight!--speaks volumes.Did you happen to catch this part from Feingold?
10/8/2009 1:30:41 AM
10/8/2009 1:41:36 AM
So the commitee makes a request to the white house that they know will likely be denied. (Why would the white house bother sending someone to a congressional subcommittee?) It's about congressional oversight, so they can make snarky little comments about the white house evading the issue. The white house did, however, release a letter explaining its position, some of which is presented in that article. I await their conclusion on the constitutionality of czars now that they've gotten the partisan bickering out of the way.
10/8/2009 2:26:27 AM
You're aware that Russ Feingold is a famously civil libertarian Democrat, right? The Senator with the honorable distinction of being the only Senator to vote against the USA PATRIOT Act?Naturally, it must be partisan sniping on his part.
10/8/2009 2:34:37 AM
Yeah, he's nominally a democrat. Kinda like Arlen Spector is a democrat, who is also on the subcommitee. Hell, I'm a registered republican, but I've been left-leaning for the last 5 years.
10/8/2009 2:47:21 AM
Exactly what makes him "nominally" a Democrat? I mean, aside from being less reluctant to sell civil liberties and unchecked executive power up the river when politically expedient, which I suppose are defining features of Congressional Democrats.
10/8/2009 2:49:20 AM
Fienman is known as kind of a "maverick" in the party, to my knowledge. A republican on the subcommitee also made some remarks which I'm referring to. Anyway, I'd like to know if they're actually going to accomplish anything, or if this is just going to be talk-radio fodder.
10/8/2009 3:26:02 AM
^ Who the fuck is "Fienman"? The senator being discussed here, Feingold, is not "nominally a democrat"--that you suggest this shows that you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. In any event, my point stands: It's not just Glenn Beck and Company questioning Obama's "czars." I realize that some of you want to dismiss any related criticism as right-wing kooks or some such--but it just ain't so.
10/8/2009 4:12:22 PM
10/8/2009 4:46:34 PM

10/8/2009 5:04:02 PM

Can we just stop. I thought this thread had finally died, as is should have. There is just nothing there (other than hopes of something being there). Even Feingold admits that there is nothing there except, "The public wants to know".
