i can accept the possibility of a republican winning in 2012. but palin? why? what does she stand for? why would anyone want to vote for her?
7/6/2009 1:36:00 PM
If I vote for he she'll come to NC and have sex with me.
7/6/2009 1:50:15 PM
^^In 3 years ask yourself that question. A heckuva lot can happen in that time. Ask Obama if you dont believe me.....If shes going to run for it, shes basically got a year and a half to improve her image, a few months to win the Republican nomination and a few more months of campaigning if she gets the OK.I'd say she needs at least that 1.5 years to prep for a run to be feasible given all the bad PR she's recieved. Wheather she brought this bad press upon herself, is dumb, or whatever else you guys are talking about isn't the debate at hand (although you guys think it is for some reason). The debate is why she quit to begin with and if a presidential bid is possible. I definately see it as a possibility, though several things have to happen for her to get there.[Edited on July 6, 2009 at 1:52 PM. Reason : ^^]
7/6/2009 1:51:42 PM
i didn't say anything about image. i asked what she stood for and why anyone would vote for her.
7/6/2009 1:53:46 PM
And I say in 3 years, what she stands for will most likely be different in the publics eye (for good or not, only time will tell) and thats the time to debate her stances. Right now, the feasiblility of a successful campaign is the real question.
7/6/2009 2:07:49 PM
i don't think she could ever get the nomination, she's got an established record as a populist that a lot of conservatives wouldn't go for
7/6/2009 2:40:00 PM
^^Well, I submit to you that as a person she's far too ignorant to have a successful campaign. As a candidate, she's far to divisive. If the GOP wants to win the next election they will need to find a candidate that's a little more centrist than the most recent crop. Palin's supporters are the stereotypical inbred smalltown hick republicans. While there are a lot of these people, it's not enough to win the election.
7/6/2009 3:08:52 PM
My wife maintains that even if Sarah Palin was the best person for the job, she'd never win because no matter what they say, women are hateful bitches and will never vote for a woman for president.Interesting theory. Gotta get that woman vote, son.
7/6/2009 3:27:28 PM
^ i guess some truth to that because Obama did win over a surprising number of women when running against Hilary.

you can pretty much shut the fuck up about mercuryhttp://www.energystar.gov/ia/partners/promotions/change_light/downloads/Fact_Sheet_Mercury.pdf
7/6/2009 10:13:18 PM
7/6/2009 10:14:55 PM
^^And that document proves what exactly? That I have to shut off the central air if one light bulb breaks in my house (as it quotes the EPA guidelines I already noted)? LOL!
7/6/2009 10:21:35 PM
It shows the environmental mercury is significantly reduced by using CFLs over incandescent light bulbs. Also, how many light bulbs do you break a year? Also, this is great:"A CFL containing 5 mg of mercury breaks in your child’s bedroom that has a volume of about 25 m3 (which corresponds to a medium sized bedroom). The entire 5 mg of mercury vaporizes immediately (an unlikely occurrence), resulting in an airborne mercury concentration in this room of 0.2 mg/m3. This concentration will decrease with time, as air in the room leaves and is replaced by air from outside or from a different room. As a result, concentrations of mercury in the room will likely approach zero after about an hour or so. Under these relatively conservative assumptions, this level and duration of mercury exposure is not likely to be dangerous, as it is lower than the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard of 0.05 mg/m3 of metallic mercury vapor averaged over eight hours."Professor Sue MacIntosh, Professor of Environmental Health, Harvard UniversityI also hope you replaced all those thermostats in your house since they contain 100x as much mercury as one CFL.

7/6/2009 10:59:21 PM
hey, dickfaces - take the CFL shit to another thread. This thread is to make fun of Palin!!and on that topic, here's some more gossip about what's going on in Alaska (AP article reprinted in HuffPo)http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20090706/us-palin-struggles/
7/6/2009 10:59:57 PM
^^^It shows how mercury emissions over time are greatly reduced, but that's clearly different than immediate exposure to mercury from a broken bulb. You're comparing apples to oranges. And as to thermostats: you are woefully misinformed. The article says "old-style" thermostats. In fact most thermostats sold in stores today contain no mercury. Can you guess why?Because the same environmental groups that lobby for CFLs, lobbied against mercury-based thermometers. For the very reason you state! In fact many countries have banned mercury-based thermometers for most practical purposes.See:http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/press-center/releases2/children-and-workers-exposed-tGreenpeace complains here about exposure to mercury by children and workers due to plants that make them in India. Hey, guess where CFLs are made? I'll give you a few tries. Then tell me how high the labor standards are there. Here's a hint:http://in.reuters.com/article/businessNews/idINIndia-29323320070904How many CFLs do you think THEY break in a year?As to the other thing you posted -- already read that, it's still unconvincing (the comments had a number of good questions about how 0.2 mg/m3 is less than 0.05 mg/m3), and more so, it leaves out the possibility of breaking multiple bulbs, etc. At any rate, I don't particularly care about mercury personally (I eat plenty of fish from unknown sources), even if I thought you had a point (and you don't), I could just as well go on about how I hate the quality of CFL light, the shape of the bulb, the acronym, and all those things would be justification for resenting the government's intervention. In fact I even think if somebody wants to eat CFLs for dinner, they should go for it. But forcing me to use them and then lecturing me on how there are basically no downsides, that I should just trust the government's judgment, is insulting and bad policy. On some level -- if we can't trust the government to give us correct information on, say, marijuana, why do we trust them to tell us which light bulbs to use? Hmmmm? Haven't we heard this line before about "there are no upsides and infinite downsides to taking another option, so we eliminated it?"[Edited on July 6, 2009 at 11:12 PM. Reason : foo]
7/6/2009 11:12:22 PM
do you by chance work in a building with tube lights? More mercury there and they are more prone to breakage. And as I said, you illiterate fuck, I hope you replaced all your thermostats. [Edited on July 6, 2009 at 11:22 PM. Reason : .]
7/6/2009 11:21:34 PM
how did the government require CFLs again? they just have a scheduled ban for incandescents (and there are lots of exceptions). there are other technologies that will probably be in the stores in the coming years as well.[Edited on July 6, 2009 at 11:21 PM. Reason : n]

^^ VP Joe Doofus said that less than three months ago. And swine flu is still a concern--widespread panic induced by the second highest leader in the land (oh, sweet Jesus) will surely help.^ Well, she's out of office in a few days, so you can STFU, right? Or will you continue to obsess and, you know, completely ignore the almost weekly gaffes on the CURRENT vice president? But since some of you are so goddamned time sensitive, here's a more recent gaffe from VP Joe Doofus--one of many:Joe Biden update: Now, he thinks N.Y. train tunnel is for cars http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2009/06/joe-biden.html

^ What about revealing classified information, as Newsweek--certainly not a right-wing publication--claimed Biden did?http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/thegaggle/archive/2009/05/15/shining-light-on-cheney-s-hideaway.aspx
7/9/2009 6:23:12 PM

7/9/2009 6:25:58 PM
^ Are you daft? All indications are that the "secure, undisclosed" location that had never been revealed before was--in fact--classified. And the fact that Cheney used the bunker is not the point. Biden could have used it, too, had he not revealed its location to the world in yet another display of his diarrhea of the mouth.Biden Reveals Classified Information?http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2009/05/biden_reveals_classified_infor.aspWhat about the stimulus funds being misused? Or does this not concern you in the least, either?VP Joe Doofus is supposedly in charge of disbursement of the stimulus--"Nobody messes with Joe!" Except, yeah, they actually do, because they know he's a dumbass. Wait, what's the number to the recovery Web site? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87Zh4p2elRcWhat, http://www.recovery.gov/?
