I'm pretty sure he can still get one, just not as easily. The NCAA can grant another one, they gave Colmer a 6th year.

Oh, I didn't realize the sixth year was a separate deal. I just thought it was a medical hardship waiver. Thanks for the clarification.

Surgery Successfulhttp://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/irvings-surgery-successful
6/29/2009 10:57:23 AM
glad to hear he's doing well.
6/29/2009 11:01:03 AM
It's like an ACC linebacker version of Final Destination. Herzlich, and now Irving. But they just won't die.
6/29/2009 11:01:18 AM
The lung collapse hurts like hell, but its a crazy-simple process to repair usually. They pumped mine up like a bicycle tire and I was back to normal in about a week. However, I've never felt like my lung capacity was 100% since.Just my personal take.Get well soon Nate! You're my favorite player!
6/29/2009 11:03:37 AM
^ so you weren't back to normal, then.
6/29/2009 11:05:42 AM
My lung colapsed during football season in High School. I was back to full strength in a month. But I was strongly urged not to push it. It all depends on the scar tissue. How it heals determines the time table for recovery.sincerly doc banger
6/29/2009 11:07:54 AM
also....this will be our go-to cruch that we (the fans) will be riding hard this year when things don't go our way.
6/29/2009 11:09:10 AM
Jaybee has made it clear that he will not stand for that
6/29/2009 11:11:51 AM
the real issue at this point is the broken leg, not the collapsed lung (assuming the surgery did go as good as the article says). if the surgery was successful and the lung is fine, then he will be fine soon, but with the leg being broken who knows how that will heal. Hopefully it heals right and doesn't get infected.
6/29/2009 11:12:00 AM
^^ I know, I agree with him, but you know what I'm saying.^Does anyone know which bone? Upper or lower leg? Right or left? It would help if it was a lower leg so he could wear a boot and it would not limit his mobility as much.
6/29/2009 11:31:53 AM
off topic, but does Ken Tysiac creep anyone else out?
6/29/2009 11:33:51 AM
i see NCSU athletics is FAIL at using twitter. This would be the perfect reason to use twitter, i.e. injury updates to your star player, but nooo, i have to find out thru Tysiac. I bet they don't even have smartphones
6/29/2009 12:05:43 PM
Yes, he does. And he might ask the weirdest interview questions of any reporter around. O'Brien has given him looks before that probably wanted to make Tysiac crawl into a corner.
6/29/2009 12:06:15 PM
^^Try GoPack.com, it has an article about Irving's injury.
6/29/2009 12:22:39 PM
but nothing updated, the N&O article is the latest, and its source as Annabelle Vaughn
6/29/2009 12:25:00 PM
I think it would be a mistake to use twitter to break all the stories at the expense of the relationship between our school and the N&O.
6/29/2009 12:44:28 PM
^maybe it was a joke about the frequency of our injuries and how twitter would be a more viable interface for our updates?but maybe not. all i know for sure is that we have terrible luck.
6/29/2009 12:51:39 PM
6/29/2009 2:17:57 PM
^^^ modlin, i guess i agree, but they still broke the accident. I just don't think our athletics dept has a clue with these new mediums of communication. If the N&O wants breaks, stop asking mike glennon is he gonna transfer.^^ clever, this was a poignant joke i did not intend, but nevertheless, its funny as well.^ tallyho, i just meant that yes, we have an official NCSU football twitter page, but nothing went out on it about the "successful" surgery. If you're gonna announce the accident, why not also follow thru and let everyone else know what the dilly is.

Did they ever say which bone he broke in his leg?
7/7/2009 8:23:56 AM
broken legs heal fast. we might get him for a few games, but i would honestly rather medical redshirt him than lose a year of eligibility for playing.
7/7/2009 8:50:06 AM
Provided he bounces back from this, and barring some other unforseen injury, I doubt he is that concerned with losing a season of eligibility. Considering he is only a Redshirt Junior and flirted with leaving for the NFL last year, I don't think he sees himself here 3 more seasons.
7/7/2009 8:56:45 AM
7/7/2009 9:15:57 AM
I don't understand the discussion about "medical rs".Nate's now heading to the NFL after the 2010 season, regardless. Right?[Edited on July 7, 2009 at 9:43 AM. Reason : ]
7/7/2009 9:35:22 AM
I can't imagine Nate would leave early unless he comes back this year and is productive. His draft stock can't be great right now and he'll have another year to prove himself again.
7/7/2009 9:46:27 AM
^I know. What i'm saying is he might not even play this year. So he'll come back for the 2010 season (his rs senior season) and head to the NFL after that. I seriously doubt he'd come back for the 2011 season, even he get a medical redshirt.
7/7/2009 9:56:59 AM
Oh, yeah, definitely. I thought you said for the 2010 season, not after.
7/7/2009 10:05:30 AM
^^ Have we ever received any indication that he could play this year? "Broken Leg" can mean a lot of different things because of the diff't bones and resulting injuries from a bone being broken. That being said, if we could get him for 5/6 games this year, I feel like he would return for his RS senior season, whereas before, he probably would have left after this year. So we may end up getting him for an extra few games outta this. I just hope he is the same player he was before.
7/7/2009 10:28:35 AM
they said in the last article that there is no timetable on an announcement about his playing status for this year.
7/7/2009 10:42:38 AM
how much does being injury prone hurt a player's draft stock? He missed a third of last season's games, then this could lead to future leg/lung problems.
7/7/2009 12:07:53 PM
^ I didn't realize being in a car accident qualified as being injury-prone.

I'm under the impression collapsed lungs don't have any meaningful long term effect. An awful break can be a different story, but I'm sure Irving will be very serious about his rehab and be back smashing heads next year.Get well soon, Nate!

8/13/2009 7:57:29 PM
yeah, but it'd be a lot cooler if our built in excuse could be "ACC! ACC! ACC!"
