IIRC the one I'm looking at is an SE so it has HIDs, the aluminum roof, revised front lip, and the lighter forged bbs wheels found on the MR. car is black. i'll post some pics in a few.

i hope you're ready for the stare and drive. tyrese taught me that!

speaking of tyrese, i was thinking about getting a convertible 3rd gen eclipse but realized that it was too much car for me.

hence my evo lean.

Turbo cars are fun, they however often don't have good throttle response, and my personal big vice w/the Evo;
the on off throttle, pretty much no ability to smoothly transition between the two. On the other hand, seating position, cabin layout/driving controls are pretty nice. The pedal box doesn't have the best arrangement from what I recall, I mean it's as if they took it straight out of an econobox that was never meant to be driven hard...

***thought i'd throw this here instead of making a new thread for now***

so i'd like to do a diff fluid change. looked up the OEM part number and found the cheapest rear axle fluid.

http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=MorePartInfo&PartID=753361&siteid=214672&catalogid=4462

that's the cheapest i can find. i need 3 mother fucking bottles /palm face. a lot of things i read say that the FM booster really helps the LSD in the e46 m3 from grinding.

am i going to fuck myself going with redline or something else? ahmet, i'm hoping you'll have the most definitive answer on this.

same goes for the transmission fluid.

http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=MorePartInfo&PartID=753367&siteid=214672&catalogid=4462

this stuff is only sold in 1 gallon jugs unfortunately.

I just did differential fluid and manual transmission fluid change in M3 with Redline synthetics.

$194 grand total. That includes both fluids and labor. And this was in Norwalk, CT....one of NYC most expensive suburbs.

If you shop around and spend time researching you will get the right price.

i mean yeah i can find redline for that price with np. the issue is whether or not the zomgforumboys are correct when they say you really shouldn't go with anything other than OEM.

is it necessary to change manual transmission fluid? Or does it vary by car? I've had the Integra for about 160,000 miles and haven't touched the transmission fluid, ever.

honda transmissions are definitely different than bimmer transmissions

i'd definitely change that fluid regularly

research on a forum and see what works for them

i know on my subie, which has a transmission pretty much made of glass, i researched and found out that i should use a mixture of:

1qt Redline lightweight shockproof
1qt Pennzoil Synchromesh
top it off with:
2qt Castrol HypoyC 80w-90

I put Redline 90W Synthetic in the rear diff

I drive the fuck outta my Subie, offroad and rallyX races and rally practice nearby where i live at least once a week

shifting is a hell of a lot smoother with this cocktail, and anyone who's driven a subie and a honda back to back knows what im talking about

I'm planning on changing the fluid every 20 - 25k

Is it doing anything that makes you want to change it? You could go with Redline, it's popular, however as a data point my last M3 (e36) had 210k miles, the last 40k from me, 24 track days including a couple of time trials with what appear to be factory fluid when I drained it half way through, had never missed a beat... Not saying don't change it, but BMW claims "life time" for a lot of their fluids.

In other news, outside Best Buy in Mass 20 mins ago:

Felt like Mobil 1 5w-40

for e46 M's you should change the tranny and diff every 30k (at least thats the popular opinion with e46 M owners). Recommended factory intervals are 60k. The lifetime fluid was for the non-M's, and that definition was usually 100k.

I stick to OEM.

Well right, and for full disclosure, it's in BMW's interest to claim higher intervals as scheduled service is supposed to be included at no cost from BMW...

However, it doesn't make much sense to change the fluid arbitrarily either. There are a lot of people that change their oil every 3k miles (or 4500 or whatever), while BMW/Porsche etc. have been calling for 15k + intervals for over a decade now... and that's engine oil that's subjected to blow by, and vastly larger temperature fluctuations.

i'm going to do a full inspection ii.

it's sitting at 115k on the odometer and it has only had one inspection i and one inspection ii done. it should've been through inspection i a second time already. seeing as inspection ii is everything inspection i is and more, i'll sleep better at night going through the entire thing. according to the previous owners memory of when the diff fluid was changed it's due. i'll do a visual of course. this is all planning preemptively.

also, talked to mpowered today. when they do /// fluid changes they use redline and such. not OEM. it would be hard for me to believe a BMW specialty shop would be doing something not good for the car? right?

no go on the evo ix in florida. it ended up being way too much of a hassle due to it being an out of state sale, sun trust having the title, having to take days off from work, and me needing some financing. i had hoped to be able to do everything in one trip but it seems like it would take two to make it happen. needing two trips completely offsets what would have been a pretty good deal. oh well.

You should be on your 4th Inspection II ( and 4th valve adjustment with that) at 120k miles.

^Yup. Inspect I every ~30k and Inspect. II every ~60k

^^Yeah liens on titles suck. I have dealt with it twice on my car purchases and were not ideal. But its hard to buy a car thats in the 20-30k from someone who doesn't have a loan on it.

i'm well aware of what i should be at. i can't help that the ass hat before didn't feel the need to have the car done that often.

you mistyped i hope though. if i should be on my 4th inspection ii, that means 4 inspection i's would already be done on the car. which is not accurate

should be on the 2nd inspection ii coming up. having 2 inspection i's already done.

this is why i'm skipping the inspection i and just going for ii...

Yeah, but didn't you get more than what you paid for it? Seems like a good trade off... I'd buy an evo for $13k ish, but not much -if any- more. But I don't really want an EVO. I don't really want an M3 either. Screw cars, they all make you want more.

I did, but only because I absolutely stole it when I bought it. I sold it--after months of being on the market--for a fair-to-somewhat attractive price.

^if you dont mind me asking, what did you end up selling it for and how long ago was it?

these evo kids are really pissing me off. i have a wtb ad on craigslist evo 8 ~$15, evo 9 ~$18.5. which i feel are fair prices. of course someone responded with "umm i just have to ask, is anyone actually responding to your ad"

i proceeded to write a 3 paragraph long email about how mods don't make your car worth significantly more money, how a 7 year old mitsu has not retained 85% of it's value, and how prices are clearly high as the same cars have been for sale for 4+ months.

his response: "ok bud"

sigh

I sold mine for $26,500. It was a bone stock IX with the sun/sound/leather package and HID lights. Had a set of bald Azenis on it. I think it had 27-28k miles when I sold it. I think you're probably dreaming in terms of getting a IX for $18.5k. You should be able to get an VIII for $15k, though, although it will probably be an early model with 80k+ miles.

[Edited on July 21, 2009 at 11:10 AM. Reason : Bought for $26k @ 7k miles in early '07. Sold in late spring/early summer of '08.]

so it looks like evo prices are finally starting to drop. there was one listed at 20k firm a month ago that is now $16k OBO (2004 black, 1 owner, 29,000 miles) other sellers are starting to follow suit.

yay
