the vette will be just fine with a decent set of pads. i think you'd be missing out if you sell it before putting it on the track at least once. the complaints like size and build quality (which 90% of people agree with, btw) tend to fall away when the impressive stock performance is experienced. no doubt it's a trade off for some things, but that's part of what an american sports car is about and the personality of it. sheer power, not so graceful execution.
5/1/2009 2:13:37 AM
^yeah, you HAVE to take it out at least once!
5/1/2009 7:28:29 AM
I would have to agree with ahmet. The raw power was a lot of fun but the steering felt horrible. Not a car I would want to own.

ROAD HOUSE....(Oh no, a shytebox that's fast. Better pistol whip it with a loaded gun.....)]

How many miles are on the vette? Are all the bushings and shocks in good shape? It'd be pretty silly to compare a stock 100k+ vette w/ a 911 w/ fresh performance suspension on it. New bushings and shocks can do wonders for feel. Not that it'll probably ever feel as good as a 911 but it should be just fine. How would you compare the vette and 911 feel to the E36 M3? How are the steering ratios on the two? Personally, i like the slower, but tight rack on the M3. I like being able to dial in exact steering angles and for it to not be super twitchy. I actually think the steering on my gf's Jeep Grand Cherokee is ridiculously tight whenever i drive it. There is def such a thing as too tight of steering imo.

^^dude seriously were you dropped on your head as a baby?
5/1/2009 1:31:43 PM
^^while i'm sure some new parts would definitely help, even brand new c5 steering was pretty soft (very low effort) and doesn't give much feedback compared to other sports cars. it is a quick ratio though, and responds very well with small amounts of driver input. the end result of all that can make it very easy to oversteer and over correct. it really comes down to an issue of personal preference in my opinion. i can definitely see why someone driving one for the first time wouldn't like it. once you get the hang of it though, it's silly how easy it is to flick one around.

OK, so let me set a few things clear to interpret my post with:Slow vs. Fast shall refer to steering ratio --> How many degrees the front wheels will turn on average (since due to ackerman the inside will turn in more than the outside) per degree of turn of the steering wheel. Heavy vs. Light shall refer to steering assist amount from the power steering pressure difference (between the inside and outside of the steering rack). OK, the 911 has variable ratio steering, it's slightly slower in the center. It does not feel like the M3 nor the Corvette has variable ratio steering, but I may be wrong. If they are variable ratio, they are not pronounced. All these cars also have variable steering assist as well. Anyway, so the 911 has the best steering of any car I've driven. Good tires improve the feel, as does stiffer suspension, however many would think it was over boosted/over assisted. This is not my impression, I don't necessarily mind heavy steering, but only if it is accompanied by good feed back as well. The 911's steering ratio is faster than the M3s, the Corvette's is (much) faster still, in fact I think it's too fast. Fast steering can be an advantage when correcting for over steer, but in general it is not quite as precise. The Corvette also runs far less caster, so it doesn't want to center itself. The 911 does this exceedingly well, and the M3 is almost bar none, though achieves this without much caster. It's the most fun to oversteer car I've ever driven (the e36, e46 is also pretty good). I say this from my impressions from almost a dozen 911s of various backgrounds, and ditto for the M3s, however I've only driven a hand full of Corvettes, and only mine quite hard so far. Bushings and the suspension is in amazing shape in my car. Everything looks fresh, no cracks in the rubber, etc. It has 135k highway miles, though it was quite well maintained. I will post more later.
5/1/2009 7:22:44 PM
e36 m3s and up have variable steering ratios
5/1/2009 8:25:38 PM
awesome, i'd love to drive them both back to back.

Oh my, it can get pretty sideways in the wet. It's nice to be able to hold a slide however long you want... And yes, the fast steering does come in pretty handy.

It feels like a different car after getting it detailed:I do kinda like it, I'm not going to lie. I may be working on a way to get it up to VIR for at least a few laps this weekend. Pictures will follow. But hey, anybody looking for one, or knows somebody looking for one. I'm asking $12.9k, I can work in a finders fee too. Help a brother get his GT3!

WHEN ARE YOU GUYS HIRING, I'M AS SERIOUS AS A 7 LITER V EIGHT
5/11/2009 6:33:54 PM
So, I have a guy who wants to buy it for $11k. on Monday, so there goes hopes of making money on the C5.Alas, I'm frustrated w/the 911 and will be taking the Corvette up to VIR tomorrow. I guess I have to, there was only one 3.5 + liter vehicle at the track today (at 3.6 liters eheh), I will be THE only other person...It's not often anymore that I have a notably fast car compared to the field at track events any more. This should be an ego booster, ha.
5/16/2009 11:44:52 PM
did the corvette sell?
5/18/2009 11:28:34 PM
5/19/2009 12:21:52 AM
not really. early c5's are cheap. 97's-98's sell for 10-12k fairly regularly.[Edited on May 19, 2009 at 12:24 AM. Reason : .]
5/19/2009 12:23:55 AM
meh true but its that more liked version if you will. and frankly i wouldnt buy a car in that price range, I knew I would sell cause I dont like it and only try to fetch $1000 for it. Not saying im a pro, but if he sat on the car long enough and didnt take it to track days, that car would get about another 2500-3k out of it, granted it was marketed right. I could be wrong but thats just the way its been in my experience.
5/19/2009 12:39:06 AM
wtf are you rambling about, corky?[Edited on May 19, 2009 at 12:43 AM. Reason : we should all listen to the guy that buys his rides from walmart]

pics of the window sticker? what in the blue fuck for?? again, this is not buying a barbie bike from walmart. negotiations are allowed.

pics of the window sticker, dealers pricepics of other paperwork to see how much he accutaly paid. haggle/just paid advertising cost, plus doc fees and other retarded shit from a dealer. dont know why im even bothering with you. just want to see what happens with this car.

I have to say the vette is an impressive machine. My impressions (on track during a downpour);Surprising amount of traction, particularly for acceleration. I was very surprised by this. Decent brake feel, pretty good natured chassis behaviour, predictable break away. Very little understeer. Mostly tail happy. Cons are cumbersome dynamics/lack of nimbleness owing to long wheelbase, and complete lack of steering feel.I still have it, I don't think I'll loose money on it, though may not make anything meaningfull either.
5/19/2009 1:20:39 AM
I think you should stay with the vette. the parts to make it handle better are all over the place. Keep it as a nice weekend car/track car
5/19/2009 9:11:34 AM
This is Ahmet. All he ever drives are weekend cars... Come on... Pay attention!
5/19/2009 9:13:26 AM
lol guess youre right
5/19/2009 9:46:46 AM
I think anyone giving him advice to stay with the vette is an idiot.

It did not sell as the guy never showed up. This makes him the 3rd person to offer me "$11k cash, I'll come meet you tomorrow" and fail to follow up. I want a GT3, which if I'm going to be able to pull, I'd have to sell both cars. Even if not however, doesn't make a lot of sense to own the C5 as a second car. None the less, there's lots to like about it, so I'm not terribly bothered by it not selling at the moment. I took it upon myself to do the Column Lock Bypass, went ahead and ordered the parts for that. I'll probably install it this Friday. Those that have owned a C5 probably know what this issue is about... The electronic column lock sometimes fails to unlock on occasion, keeping the steering wheel locked. I've already taken it off line, but I don't want that message to come up on the display.Anyway, if I had room in my heart for it, I really think it'd be quite the formidable (track?) package. Again I'm rather impressed by the lack of understeer on this car, it's rather well mannered for a factory stock suspension. My biggest complaint really is the sheer size of it. Interior quality is also quite low as I've said before, but the chassis is actually quite good. It's also under dampened, and it's rather softly suspended. Considering the spring rate, the ride is impressively good also. Mostly though, I can't believe how progressive it's break away characteristics are, under steady state cornering. Almost any other car that rides this well gets much harder to control near the limit. I'm sort of curious to try one that's been properly modified/stiffened up, though I doubt I'll get the opportunity any time soon. It just pulled so hard on a wet track. After horsing around on the street, I found this rather surprising. Finally, I was again impressed by the lack of understeer. Brake feel/modulation is superb also, however it is hard to hold it at ABS threshold.
