Y'all are missing the point. It's not about the amount or type of fans a school has. It's their academics. You wanna cheer for the tech school. Land-grants are desirable. If Clemson has more fans than USC and "resembles" UNC for that, it doesn't matter. Clemson is our brother as a land-grant university.Clemson is a land-grant school. USC is not. Virginia Tech is a land-grant school. UVA is not. Auburn is a land-grant school. Bama is not. Georgia Tech is not a land-grant...UGA is...but the tech makes it a toss-up.When in doubt, root for the land-grant, folks. It's not that hard.

Here's an interesting blog about the kind of rivalry I'm discussing. The author writes in his "Why I'll be cheering for three Southern land grant schools, and so should you" post about why he's cheering for Mississippi State, Clemson, and Auburn. Here's one of the quotes he uses to explain:

Here are some words about Clemson, the school that started this discussion:

listen, we all understand what you're saying, but i think you're wrong. we're talking about sports and teams' fans, not academics.
2/24/2009 12:45:45 AM
I'm disappointed you dismissed my earnest efforts.Anyway, what is the argument that Clemson is like Chapel Hill? A lot of people that didn't go there supposedly root for them, and you can find Clemson gear in Walmarts? Here's a ranking of universities by merchandising sales from 2006:http://tinyurl.com/qoca3USC is 20th. Clemson is 24th. Since they don't have much in terms of professional sports or other public schools (College of Charleston and SCSU), it's not surprising they are both ranked so high. Still, USC beat Clemson. Alabama beat Auburn. Kansas beat Kansas State. Texas beat Texas Tech. Ole Miss beat Mississippi State. Alabama beat Auburn. Virginia beat Virginia Tech. And UNC-CH beat us.This is all sort of falls in line with what I've been saying.Mississippi State, Virginia Tech, and NC State didn't actually make the list. But I know State's gonna be back. It's hard to make the list when you got fucking Duke sitting at 23rd and all the newcomers we got who don't care about college sports and we have a lot more schools in general than most states. Still, I think our rivalry is similar to what you find in other states, particularly throughout the South. And I think, of Clemson and USC, Clemson would clearly be the NC State of the NCSU-UNC rivalry. Clemson and USC being in different conferences makes things weird, but whatever, I stand by my assertion.[Edited on February 24, 2009 at 2:03 AM. Reason : I'm right!]
2/24/2009 1:54:56 AM
And there are going to be more Walmart fans in general throughout the deep South. They have less professional teams, less universities, and less college graduates in general. Using y'all's logic, you could compare every big school down there to Chapel Hill because they have so many Walmart fans. But you can't really blame them...they wanna cheer for a team, right? And they don't have many options. We got the Canes, Bobcats, Panthers, and public universities including East Carolina University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.South Carolina has Clemson University, College of Charleston, South Carolina State University, and the University of South Carolina. And a piece of the Panthers?[Edited on February 24, 2009 at 2:29 AM. Reason : Am I crazy?]

UNC students can go off and chant "start your tractors" to me. I don't care. I've never owned a tractor, let alone a riding lawnmower, in my life. I come from a poor, predominantly black neighborhood in Charlotte (even though you would never know it by the way I act and dress). I'd probably ask one of them "so where are you from if you think I'm a redneck just b/c I went to State" and they'd probably respond with something like "I'm from Gastonia/Kinston/Rocky Mount" and I'll say "that's what I thought, so why don't you fuck off and go back to your piece of shit town". (I guess many of you by now know that I hate Gastonia and its Wal-Mart UNC fan rednecks with a passion; it's a shame my brother has to live there ) I double majored in microbiology and biochemistry, and minored in genetics. If they want to wave their "prestigious" B.A. in Art History degree in front of me I'll gladly grab it and wipe my ass with it.

at least clemson's ncaa championships are 2 soccer, 1 golf, 1 football as opposed to 5 for riding a horse and 1 track and field. On top of that, Clemson leads 65-37-4 in football (16-3-1 over the last 20 years too) 163-118 in baseball, and women's basketball, men's soccer, women's soccer are all ClemsonSC leads in men's basketball 86-73, swimming&diving, volleyballGiven that data from a neutral point of view leads me to think Clemson has a better sports program...unless you are going purely on national championships - 5 of which are for horse riding...something Clemson and a LOT of other schools dont even have.[Edited on February 24, 2009 at 2:11 PM. Just about anyone that knows college athletics would tell you that Clemson easily has a better athletic program than South Carolina.Football, Baseball, Basketball, Golf, you name it Clemson is usually better.
2/24/2009 2:30:42 PM
^^I don't like your effort at all. When we were talking about Walmart fans, you didn't want to be likened to Chapel Hill. But when it comes to how much classier you are than USC (like "light and dark," according to you) and how superior your sports programs are, you couldn't wait for the comparison.I've always rooted for Clemson. But just for you, next time your Tigers come to the Dean Dome, I'll make sure to not give a shit if they finally break that pathetic streak they have going.Everybody else is right. I am wrong. Clemson is to Chapel Hill what State is to USC. I've seen the light.

Having been to both Clemson and USC and experiencing both fanbases I will weigh in with what I think is a pretty accurate assesment of them. Now these are generalizations, so they don't apply to everyone. Both fanbases are a little delusional in terms of how great their football programs are, but at least Clemson actually has history in their program and multiple conference championships and a national championship. USC has one conference championship from 1969. Both are some of the most die hard fanbases in college football, but I'd have to give the edge to the Gamecocks simply for the fact that they sold out their stadium during a winless season, and have never been very good. Also Death Valley is notorious for having all four corners of the upper deck empty during games against cupcakes and ACC opponents that they think are inferior to them. It's not a complete knock on them. Clemson has like 6,000 less students than USC, and they are in a small ass town rather than a city. Both fanbases have been nice to me. USC did have your normal amount of assholes though. I've never had a bad experience with Clemson fans though. Not even as much as a boo while walking by them. In fact they usually went out of their way to greet me and make sure I was enjoying my experience there. Both have their country good ol' boy fanbases. I mean that's what you can expect from things associated with that state. USC seemed to have the more backwards thinking rednecks though. I mean I'm talking about the ones that can't let the Civil War go, and there are some you question whether they have an extra chromosome (this applies to ones that are obvious non-alums). The Clemson fans on the other hand while Southern in nature are good people. They would seem like the type of people that while they may have been around racism growing up, they are enlightened enough to not completely think that way.The women at USC love to wear their little black dresses that have a plunging neck line to the games and seem less classy overall. They seem like the girls that go to college just to find a husband and get a degree that can get them a decent job in an office and stay there for the next 35-40 years, but their husband is the one that brings home the big paycheck (note this doesn't apply to USC's female grad students who usually end up with a great career). They are the kind that you would date for a maximum of 6 months and you know right from the start you don't plan on anything serious with this girl. You only go out with her to go to the games, go to parties/bars with, and come back to fuck at the end of the night. You only want to have a good time with them, not marry them. The Clemson women on the other hand do love to wear their orange sun dresses, but they also like to wear a nice pair of jeans, a white button-up shirt and an orange sweater vest over it. They are classier overall. They like to party, but their entire college career isn't about partying and finding a husband. They often go on to have great careers possibly something with a science background. They seem to be more goal oriented, but are still the typical Southern Belles. They are the kind that you want to marry, and not just settle for. Some of this can be seen in how the two schools were founded and who they catered too when looking at the Tillmanites and the Conservatives.Political factions in 1880s South CarolinaTillmanitesFavored college: ClemsonFigurehead leader: Benjamin TillmanPolitical ideology: Agrarian populismBase of support: The Upstate; ruralConfederate service: 50.0%Conservatives Favored college: South Carolina Figurehead leader: Wade Hampton III Political ideology: Conservatism Base of support: Statewide; urban Confederate service: 79.1%[Edited on February 24, 2009 at 3:44 PM. ^^AHA, sorry bout that. You posted a failtruck at me. I know what you're saying...it's just that you're getting in the way of my argument.Dude said Clemson is like UNC-CH.I said that it isn't. If anything Clemson is like State, and USC is like Chapel Hill. I gave plenty of evidence to support my assertion. Most of it revolved around history and academics. But then everybody else came in and pointed out that my analogy doesn't work when you consider athletics. I had to run with it and make whatever case I could to paint Clemson as the underdog. When really I think my analogy still applies despite athletic programs. Clemson's just been more consistently successful at beating their USC rival. Auburn was kicking the shit out of Bama for a while there. And hopefully State can start competing with Chapel Hill in basketball again.^I agree with what he said.

bttt for PSU's win over #23 Illinois, a team they beat in Champaign. I guess it's ok. It's a record setting win for them (school record for most wins in the regular season), and most of their fans are new to basketball. The Bryce Jordan Center is usually pretty barren at this time of the year.

That was a least twice as fast as any rush I've ever seen. The entire lower level was empty in 5 seconds.
