So we've bounced along at 840. I think during other days like this, we'd have a slow steady retrace up (today maybe to the 855 range?) starting after lunch until 3ish, followed by a selloff then a plunge near the end with a couple of small bounces (maybe even into the finish) as people buy at what they think is the low.

anyone in corporate or treasury bonds? heard bernanke fared well on those or did npr say something about he had to do it so he wouldn't seem all over the place and to back himself up. anyways i looked into it and you can get decent return compared to the past on them

^^ I didn't buy a couple of hours ago because I'm waiting for the release of the Beige Book at 2pm (your time). I'm guessing that it isn't going to be news that's gonna drive the markets up.

^ news to nobody. i guess that's why it didn't have much impact.I added 17 shares to my position in Morningstar.Plan on making a big jump back into SSO before the end of the day.
1/14/2009 2:58:58 PM
Looks like it might have started it's afternoon nose over. Maybe it's a blip and it moves back into the lower 840s range, but it sure started moving quicker than it has in the past hour or so.
1/14/2009 3:04:44 PM
yeah, that little run-up had me nervous for a minute.
1/14/2009 3:08:34 PM
I'm feelin if it cracks 837 (the intraday low) it might start running. The last low before that was 816, then the Nov 20 lows. So, maybe it doesn't really start south at 837, maybe that happens as we approach 816. If you want to buy SSO near here, why not just roll in 25% or so now. If the move is clearly up, you can roll the rest in. If the move is down, roll another 25 or 50% in.
1/14/2009 3:18:32 PM
wheeeeee!here it goes!I'm about to just buy a ton of SSO and go to sleep...gotta be up in 2.5 hours (slept for a few hours already).^ yep, that's why i'm hesitant...but i can't stay up much longer, and you never know when the internet will be down for an hour or a day or two out here. i'm about to just go all in and hope for the best. i'm reasonably comfortable that nothing is likely to happen worse than simply having to wait to flip the profit.[Edited on January 14, 2009 at 3:21 PM. 1/15/2009 9:09:02 AM
We might have a few legs up into the 20th, but I think any gains we have between now and then we'll be undone rather quickly after that.
1/15/2009 9:29:43 AM
Id just like 3 or 4 of my stocks to get back up to prices they were like 2 weeks ago when I was an idiot and didnt sell before the market takes another dump, that would free up nearly half my cash to hold until things have settled again. A guy can hope cant he haha

What if you wanted to get into oil, specifically, you think crude is going to be higher in 6 months, and much higher in 12-18 months, and you were willing to sit and watch through these turbulent times while it waves from $35-$48, is there an index that tracks crude directly with the cost of oil per barrel? oh and major to any financials reporting, including C. I think BOA cut thousands of job last Friday didn't they?
1/15/2009 4:19:06 PM
i'd say get in erx (http://finance.google.com/finance?q=erx).Quote :"The investment seeks to replicate, net of expenses, 300% of the daily performance of the Russell 1000 Energy Index The fund will invest at least 80% of assets in securities that comprise the index. It will also utilize financial instruments that, in combination, provide leveraged and unleveraged exposure to the index. The fund is nondiversified."maybe try uso (http://finance.google.com/finance?q=NYSE%3AUSO)[Edited on January 15, 2009 at 4:28 PM. Reason : erx = energy, uso = oil]
1/15/2009 4:25:19 PM
Where do you guys get all this info? I'm looking to do some more active investing, but I'm not sure where to start following things.
1/15/2009 5:01:43 PM
seekingalpha.com is a pretty good site for trading.I'd be careful on USO there is a lot of contango in that right now basically meaning oil has to go up a good bit just for you to break even.

Well, I'll be damned. I'd been scared to update my spreadsheet this week, but it's just set me back to where I was about a month ago as far as loss/gain.

Anyone use TradeStation? I'm currently with Scottrade and I can't think of any good reason to not switch.
1/16/2009 6:27:22 PM
seems like you save a penny if you trade 30 time a month....
1/16/2009 7:07:44 PM
I think you missed some commission options. For small # of share traders (like myself) you can choose to pay .01 per share, or $1 per 100 shares. This kinda crushes scottrade, which is charging me $7.99 whether I move 50, 100, 200, 300 shares on up. If I were dabbling in penny and cheap stocks and moving lots of them, a flat fee commission structure would work better, but I find myself making 100 share trades on stocks anywhere from the $5-40 range, so TradeStation seems to be nicer. I think I'll keep my scottrade account open with a small amount to trade the penny stocks (I do have a 75k share position with a sub penny stock at the moment).
