went and saw it tonight, thought it was awesome. depressing, but within the realm of reality (ie nothing seemed over the top or far fetched in the least) and just awesome.[Edited on February 7, 2009 at 8:16 PM. Reason : ]

i posted this in the Milk thread (due to where the convo had lead) but it will probably get more response here...in response to everyone saying he was robbed for the Oscar last night...i havent seen the wrestler yet, but all of his struggles aside was his performance really that inspiring? I mean, had he not the reputation he has would this role still have gained as much hype as it did? or is the mickey rourke comeback the new bandwagon to jump on?
2/23/2009 3:52:14 PM
i watched it last night - how did marisa tomei get nominated for anything - there was only 1 scene she was in where she wasn't naked - not that i'm complaining but come on now
2/23/2009 3:54:51 PM
^^dudethe scenes working the deli lineevery time he takes his hearing aid outthe scenes where he's treated like a king contrasted with the scenes where he's getting his chops busted by the average peoplethe last scene with his daughterthe last strip club scenes you're not topping that in a biopici'm sorry, its just not happening

I was not able to watch the awards last night but DVR'd it just because I wanted to see Mickey Rourke's acceptance speechbesides maybe some of DDL's performances it was was my favorite of all timethe centerpiece scene he had in the film moved the person I was with to tears because he reminded her of her father in so many waysbasically like everyone says it didn't even seem like he was acting

So I google the Penn/Rourke thing today to see what people are saying about Penn getting the award and I find some stuff about how before the oscars Rourke is talking down Penn and his acting in Milk in some pretty derogatory ways, which possibly turned some Oscar voters against him when it came time to vote. How perfect would it be if that's what caused him to lose?In the film he ends up killing himself because he just can't start a new life since he's just too addicted to the pain in the life he's created, and in real life he can't find ultimate redemption by winning on oscar because he can't stop the asshole douchbag from his past.
2/23/2009 4:11:45 PM
I dont know about that but I do know that Penn closed with "Mickey Rourke is rising again and he is my brother" so maybe it was just polite, but didnt seem like that would fit what you just said
2/23/2009 4:15:31 PM
I thought it was great and Rourke's performance was phenomenal. I haven't seen Milk so I can't really comment on Sean Penn's performance. I thought Rourke did a fantastic job at getting the audience to sympathize with his character and situation. While far from being the classic "good guy" everyone wants to root for, he became a likeable person that you couldn't help but root for despite his short comings. And in many ways, Rourke's life has taken the same beatings, which is why I think he was able to bring so much to the role.

Reason : mickey rourke was already an acting genius when sean penn was playing spicolli]
2/23/2009 4:27:31 PM

2/23/2009 4:33:28 PM

^againcharacter loses to biopicfuck the oscars mani never thought i'd say thatbut fuck the oscars
2/23/2009 5:05:10 PM
Anyone think there's a chance his acceptance speech the night before lost it for him? I really hope the judges wouldn't do something that shitty, but when I was watching his speech I couldn't help but think, "this is hilarious, but can't be good for him"
2/23/2009 5:47:52 PM
fuck the oscars
2/23/2009 5:56:50 PM
^^ The voting takes place well before the awards, so the ISA speech had nothing to do with it.Still, Milk was good and Penn was good but The Wrestler and Rourke were better.

The Academy loves Biopics. The Academy also loves the state of California, so Sean Penn wins. Hollywood loves a comeback story but not the Academy. I hate Sean Penn so I was not happy that he won.

2/23/2009 10:13:42 PM
^Yeah. I don't remember which actor on the stage talked about Jenkins. But he was pretty much saying the same thing.

Oh, I went to a Ring of Honor a couple of weeks ago and saw Necrobutcher fight. He lost, the other guy did a Ram Jam and missed, it was awesome. The crowd was all "WHERE'S THE STAPLEGUN?" "GIVE HIM THE HEART ATTACK".[Edited on February 23, 2009 at 10:35 PM. Reason : .]

I know I will probably regret saying this here... but my e-go doesn't matter.Having watched both The Wrestler and Milk I think the Oscar went to the right person. They were both nominated which means a lot. To say you had one of the best performances of the year can make anyone proud.I think they were both stellar, but I felt like Rourke's character was a lot like him... It wasn't a huge stretch for him. Everyone has already said it, "it's like the role was made for him" well, then it shouldn't have been too hard for him to portray. Not taking anything away from his acting, just saying it's almost like he played himself.Yes, this opens up an easy joke, if you are a Sean Penn hater... you can say he's gay. Good one.But seriously, if you watch Sean Penn in other movies or interviews and see his performance, especially if you look at footage of Harvey Milk and how on point he is, I think they made the right decision. I think they both did a fantastic job, but I think Penn had the more difficult role.[Edited on February 25, 2009 at 6:25 PM. Reason : .]

Which again, leads into the conversation in the other thread about biopic actors winning oscars. If you can directly compare their job of acting with the mannerisms of a real person you can say, "oh, they really did a good job of playing that person." There is not such comparison to make with a fictional character.

I just watched this movie. Regardless of whether he got fucked over or not about awards and everything, the movie is raw as hell. I definitely dug it
3/5/2009 3:30:14 AM
rented it last night. I really like how it explored aging, and trying to stay in a subculture when everyone else you got in with has essentially gotten out.and I had no idea that Marisa Tomei is 45...

I saw it tonight. I thought it was a good film that didn't sugarcoat anything. I felt so bad for him when he realized he didn't make it to meet up with his daughter and he knew it cost his chance at making amends with her. On one hand you think to yourself hey he shouldn't have gone out the night before, but then you have to remember how messed up his head must be at this point in his life. I am thankful that I have a good relationship with my parents. I definitely couldn't just shut them out of my life no matter how how bad they let me down. The beauty in the movie is how you want to pull for the guy, but know that he's cursed and will have a tragic end.
4/26/2009 10:47:51 PM
i liked this movie more when it was named "beyond the mat"
4/26/2009 10:49:48 PM
so i just got finished watching this for the first time. so tragic. I felt so bad at the end, the missed connections the struggles, everything. definitely not a movie i can watch very often but i enjoyed it.
