Here is a quick example of "classy" Republican loss. . .
message_topic.aspx?topic=547182

Look, I am not saying they aren't capable of class but I would caution anyone from trying to claim Republicans have some kind of monopoly on losing graciously.

oh please, the bitching on facebook is not what im talking about. if the Dems had lost there would be rioting and endless claims of racism, voter fraud etc. the Republicans have valid claims of voter fraud with the acorn bullshit but they have graciously conceded and let it go. And dont for a minute pretend riots would not have broken out if Obama had not won

Kainen,

Really? "Like we've never seen"?
According to ABC, Obama won the popular vote 52% to McCain's 47%.
In 2004, Bush won by 50.7% to Kerry's 48%.

Obama won the popular vote by a comfortable margin (thanks to a financial crisis), but it was hardly strikingly large. Especially when you compare it to 1980, the race that this election was most often compared to, when Ronald Reagan beat incumbent President Jimmy Carter 50.7% to 41%. If a 5 point victory is a landslide, a 10 point victory must A LANDSLIDE TIMES TWO!!!!

If this is a landslide, then we might as well just redefine the term to mean "anything close to a majority of votes". Of course, I doubt stats or facts will matter in the coming spin. They didn't matter to George Bush in 2000 when he claimed he had a mandate from the people. HEY! Another way that Obama is like W.

PS*
Electoral College vote landslide is maybe a better argument (though it actually still isn't close to Reagan's 1980 margin of victory), but is that really the metric dems want to use after pissing and moaning post 2000? Either the electoral college is a useless construct from the 18th century or it isn't. I was really hoping Obama would lead the way in ridding us of the college. But if this is his only claim to a "landslide victory" I doubt he will.

^^ It dosent have to make up 7 Million votes........all that would matter would be the swing states....a few hundred thousand would make the difference.

I hope that he actually is bipartisan as he says and not as his record indicates.

socks, the election is over you don't have to keep taking issues and picking fights with every little thing. arguing over who is 'more gracious' is pretty childish as is.

And besides, I was referring to Gore/Bush dammit. He was saying 'OMGDIEBOLD'. elec

^ I'm just taking active steps to keep the gloating of Obama supporters in check.

That includes wild claims to "landslide victories" and "popular mandates". Like I said, if this is a landslide, the term is essentially meaningless. Unless Dems suddenly fall in love with the electoral college, which I'm sure they will (sadly).

you can argue with yourself over that, that's fine. Yes I know the electoral college is a mess, but it is what it is and those are the bounds of play.

And yes, for the way we elect our presidents, this was a categorical landslide. Popular vote margin I know is about 5.8% but that's a huge spread if you run it across states, particularly ones that are up for grabs.

Well, he is right it wasn't a landslide. 52-47 isn't a nail biter, but it isn't "landslide" either.

Damn, the picture up on CNN frontpage makes Obama look evil lol.

Kainen, I'm not going to argue with you about it. If you really think a 5 point lead is a landslide that's your business. It's clear you don't care how this compares to any race other than Bush-Gore, and I can't make you care. I'll just remind you that if a 5 point win is a "landslide", then certainly Bush's 2.5 point win in 2004 was at least "popular mandate".

I already know how the Dems will spin it. And anyone that disagrees is a "sore loser"

I don't understand why people are celebrating like they won the fucking lottery. Wow the USA is headed toward essentially a liberal agenda that has worked so well in Europe

Things are not going to be that different save from higher taxes on the wealthy and potentially a national health care system.

College is still going to be expensive as fuck because the liberals already control the education system and are the ones that have allowed it to spiral into a profiteering business. The environmental movement is going to be successful because market dynamics (i.e. high energy prices) drive people to change.

Obama is not a God and the Congress is still going to be run by two complete asshole idiots in Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi. They will most likely push legislation that will further divide the parties and prevent anything from actually happening (i.e. what happened the past 8 years).

This is a pretty ridiculous semantics argument, but I'll continue to bite.

If you can easily double your opponents electoral votes while banking a 7 million voter gap (which is growing as early votes lag in georgia continue to trickle in), which by the way is double the margin that Bush beat Kerry by....it's a big win, a landslide to many, albeit a modest one.

You cant push those goal posts back any further. History will remember this election as Obama exceeding expectations in a surprising manner. Spin how you will, if you want to change the term to "landshift" or something, go for it. I will concede it's the 'lightest' form of landslide there is. It's no Nixon, Roosevelt or Reagan...

I'm pleased. Not that I think McCain would've been another Bush (people ought to know better at this point). The biggest (by far) factor for me was the war. I fucking hate it, have hated it for 6 years. It's exhausted me to no end. btw, McCain's concession speech was beautiful. I hope to God the dumbass general public truly can rally behind something without prescribing blindly to one side.

Yeah I like the guy, I just hate the way his campaign was run and he didn't have control over it. I also thought Palin was a fatal mistake for him.

But you're right, his speech was fantastic....really. It was amazing how much more appealing of a guy he is when he's relaxed (as in not manicuring a stance) and just being himself. If he could have only ran his campaign like that.

Are people really arguing how huge a win this was for Obama?

Let's see, he won Florida and Ohio by decisive margins. Two states that were practically thieved the last two elections and cost the democrats the white house.

He won 3 deep red states in Indiana, North Carolina, and Virginia that haven't gone blue in decades. That's called a redrawing of the electoral map and will have ramifications for many elections to come.

He managed to run up the score in 4 states than Bush won in 2004. New Mexico, Colorado, Iowa, and Nevada weren't even close this time around. He also ran up the score in every state that Kerry won and doubled Bush's popular vote win percentage. That is a massive achievement and means that even without the AA vote, without a massive turnout, even without his massive financial advantage, he most likely still would have won.

This was an overwhelming victory.

I wouldn't go that far (yet at least). I do know a lot of people that voted Obama that would normally vote republican or have a republican lean..HOWEVER I would also say like 75% of them (them being the friends/acquaintances I know personally like this) at least did so more because of the poor choices on the Republican side rather than being moved by Democrat policies. IE they would easily vote Republican next election with a different candidate and a better run campaign and I dont see them being any more likely to vote blue next time.

I mean, it certainly wouldn't have been as decisive as it turned out to be and we'd probably still be counting votes this morning. However, I think the ease in which he won the battleground states out west, Iowa, and all the Kerry states shows how this was never really a contest to begin with.

socks, you're reminding me of a little kid at a birthday party at McDonalds, you know, running around with a pin popping all the yellow and red balloons around, upsetting all the other kids who are celebrating because you're not.

Then going around telling all the other kids there - 'well look, someone has to keep you all in check".
Thanks, if we need a great equalizer here we'd call for one.

I know from your own words that you're jealous of the Obama's supporters enthusiasm, but with him now America's President for the next 4 years, can you do us all a favor and concentrate on things OTHER than meddling with Obama's supporters happy and excited mood around here? You're a smart cat with great detail and a lot of substantive posts when you try...why not stick to that?

Shrike,

Great. Now if you're not in tears because Obama was elected, you just don't understand the black man's struggle the same way white people that voted for Obama do.

Am I gonna have to put up with BS like this from you when I oppose his flawed health care plan next year (he'll be the first black man to propose such an ill-conceived policy! progress!)??? Should I grit my teeth and celebrate every thing the man does because of the color of his skin????

PS* Nothing seems more apt at this moment:

When did I say you could never criticize him? Criticize the hell out of him, I don't care. I can absolutely see how his ideas seem totally whack to people like yourself.

However, what you're trying to do is diminish the historical relevance of what happened last night. Given the history of this country, the emotion and enthusiasm people are showing towards Obama's victory is 100% warranted. Why you're trying to suggest otherwise, I have no idea.

For god sakes, look at the world's reaction. Almost all the damage the last 8 years has done to America's standing across the globe was wiped out in one night. Our President is once again not just our leader, but a World Leader. The United States will be able to reestablish itself as the real driving force for progress on the international stage.

I am not overly excited about Obama; but I decided in August that Obama represented a smaller "potential loss" than McCain given the worst case scenario for either candidate.

Statements like this are why I can't wait for the new to wear off and the emotion to fade.

Obama has done absolutley nothing at this point--he just got elected LAST NIGHT. But somehow he's already a World Leader in a way that Bush wasn't??? How??? Because he does well in international opinion polls? That makes him popular, but it certainly doesn't make him a leader and MOST CERTAINLY doesn't wipe away the damage that the Bush admin has done (N Korea, Iraq, Iran, Climate Change, etc).

Maybe Obama will become a world leader, maybe he will lead the way on fighting climate change and nuclear proliferation in ways Bush didn't, only time will tell. But right now he has not done anything. JACK SQUAT. And the fact that you can just rattle this stuff off with a straight face leaves me totally at a loss for words.
