We forced over 20 turnovers tonight. I think we had 14 iirc.
11/6/2008 9:28:17 PM
Fells looked damn good, Ferguson finally found his touch ::knock on wood::, Javi and Degand looked pretty good (even a 3 from Javi, and he's playing a lot more confident), Degand can still motor, McCauley had a few good hustle plays, Costner was ok, still not up to speed.Simon Harris is still a bull and was pretty beast with his minutes at the end. Honestly I think we look better at this stage than we did last year but a few key players still have to work some kinks out.Not real happy with the amount of fouls or the defensive hustle in the second half, but still were getting turnovers[Edited on November 6, 2008 at 9:32 PM. I wouldn't judge Costner just yet. He had that sprained knee that held him out of the R&W game. He still got 7 points even though it sounded like he and McCauley didn't play as much in the 2nd half.McCauley had 12 points. Harris had 9 points.[Edited on November 6, 2008 at 9:33 PM. Reason : ]

we suck on defense especially the backcourt.

11/6/2008 9:36:15 PM
So we did pretty well against the Division 2 school?
11/6/2008 9:39:57 PM
noticed that they have upped the tempo on offense, it was very very rare that we ever even got to counting down from 10 on the shot clockoh yeah and Mays still has a very long way to go and looked like a deer in the headlights against this kind of team, reminds me of when javi was first forced to run the point against acc caliber teams, but this is Fort Valley State......
11/6/2008 9:40:37 PM
Horner sucks on defense as usual and Javy was getting beat off the dribble like it was his gameplan to let the guy blow right by himCostner needs work around the basket on getting open, Fells looked good so did Ben within reasonFarnold is too fast for his own good somtimes, Mays seemed lost, Smith and Harris were stout, Trevor has found the touch, CJ williams needs more touches and we are going to get our asses handed to us against a team that can drive and rebound.
11/6/2008 9:42:30 PM
holy christ, Simon Harris is still on the team? I must be living under a rock. Cut him already.
11/6/2008 9:44:44 PM

Whoever said cut Simon Harris must either not come to the games or is just a hater. Guy is a good basketball player, a great team player, and a cool dude in general.
11/6/2008 10:05:01 PM
harris was the 12th man in, that said he did play well in limited minutes, but i wouldnt expect to see much of him this year unless there is a rash injuries

good effort tonight, team looks much more in sync this year.... not too much to say bad besides the D def needs some work, but the uptempo was GREAT to see....Also, Fells is going to excell at the 3, and CJ Williams looked like he could be a real nice fit as the 2 in that lineup, i was very impressed with his play...Javi is the most improved player I have seen from where he started out last year, he has really worked on his jumpshot
11/6/2008 10:38:46 PM
got outrebounded.......simon harris was our leading rebounder with 7. Simon actually had 9 pts and 7 boards in 11 minutes.
11/6/2008 10:41:27 PM
he is a liability on defense, him and Horner.
11/6/2008 10:41:33 PM
11/6/2008 11:01:55 PM
no, but he can create more from that position... he wasnt that streaky tonight, still a little, but its just the type of player he is, just looks like a better fit at the 3 to me
11/6/2008 11:03:07 PM
One game that doesn't even count and already making judgments on each player?Come on.
11/6/2008 11:06:12 PM
the only liability on defense that i thought was flagrant was farnold. guy got burned almost every time down.
11/6/2008 11:11:06 PM
I thought Tracy Smith was going to contribute more this year but if he is only getting 14 minutes in an exhibition game then he apparently isn't going to play much again.I just figured he would spell Costner and McCauley both and play ~20 min. I guess he still is not ready.
11/6/2008 11:12:10 PM
it's a preseason game, i'm sure they're just trying to get everybody in the game to see some action. smith will probably play a lot more when games count, and less of Feguson, Thomas, Harris, maybe Williams
11/6/2008 11:15:40 PM
they're making predictions over on Packpride. Lots of them have us with 20+ wins overall, 8+ wins in the conference, and making the NCAAs.

Javi looked a lot more fluid than he did last year, and Degand still has that extra gear when he needs it, although he also can be too fast for himself as someone else said.I was impressed by CJ Williams as a freshman, but Mays looked stiff and out of place a lot.I hope Johnny Thomas can stay healthy, that kid has a ton of potential.Horner is still a huge liability on both sides of the ball, but it was obvious that he has made some improvement (except for his perimeter shooting, which was atrocious last night).
11/7/2008 8:34:17 AM
Javi did seem like he improved a lot, I'm pretty sure he'll start over Degand this year...CJ Williams has a nice jumpshot and seems like he will be a good 2 Guard....he and Ferg will split minutes pretty evenly throughout the season.Fells is his old self, still freakishly athletic but just can't seem to finish at times.Costner looks to be in MUCH better shape, unfortunately it didn't seem to help him. He seemed to make the same mistakes he made last year. Hopefully he'll learn to play smarter.Other than Javi, McCauley seemed to have played the best...he seems back to his old self. He hustled and had a solid performance even though he didnt get many minutes.
11/7/2008 8:40:00 AM
I also wanted to comment that I thought Costner's mini-mohawk was hilarious, looked like he should have been one of Theo's friends on the Cosby Show.
11/7/2008 9:46:21 AM
I noticed the mohawk. Gave me a good chuckle last night.
11/7/2008 9:53:59 AM
My favorite part was simon harris telling the ref, "YES HE DID, YES HE DID, YES HE DID." in reference to the FVS guy touching the ball going out of bounds.Awesome.

Wow, some serious negativitiy for the first exhibition game of the season. How about giving the team a chance before the criticizing? Listening on the radio and reading the box score, there seems to be some some encouraging stuff going on. First off, no player logged-in more than 25 minutes. It seems that we might have a little depth, more so than we've had. Of course, our starters will be getting more minutes a game once we get into the season, but it seems that we might have some role players coming in off the bench. We had 26 assists for 33 baskets. Not bad. We were only outrebounded by 4. I know this was a D-II team, but it wasn't as bad as some are making it out to be. But hopefully we will improve on this (i know, seems like we should have already). 51.6% FG, 36.8% 3FG, 75% FT. Not bad. It's been said over and over, a lot of our season is riding on how well our PGs work out. I'm cautiously optimistic. Is there really a reason to be such haters for your own team? Do you ever think that potential recruits might happen upon this board and decide they don't want to play for a team with such fickle fans? Positive criticism is one thing, and i understand how frustrating being a State fan can be, but jeez, come on, show a little support!(anybody at the game want to comment on the play where Smith made the block, then ran the court, got the assist from javi, got the bucket and was fouled? Sounded impressive over the radio)[Edited on November 7, 2008 at 10:06 AM. Reason : :][Edited on November 7, 2008 at 10:07 AM. Reason : :]

^ You really just need to ignore the negative posters most of the time. You'll learn that some of them actually know what they are talking about and have legit criticisms, some of them just like talking shit, and some just have absolutely no clue (I'm looking at you "why is Simon Harris still on the team," hershculez ).And with regards to the fast breaks, I don't remember the play you mentioned specifically, but it was obvious that we are still learning how to finish on some of the fast break situations. There were several plays where we had 2-on-1 and we backed off, or the defensive player committed and we didn't take advantage. It'll get better though.[Edited on November 7, 2008 at 10:17 AM. ^^I remember the play. I wouldn't call it impressive per se, but it was quite good and brought some excitement into the game. It was just a good smart play with good effort and hustle by Smith. Good thing we didn't lose control of the ball with Smith all the way down at the other end.
11/7/2008 10:26:57 AM
"You really just need to ignore the negative posters most of the time. "Oh, I know. I would just hate to think that it could potentially hurt our recruiting chances. Not to mention the morale of other fans and even the players. But I realize that haters will be haters. Particularly over the internet. Ok, sorry for the chit chat, carry on....
