UNC has the money to be a top contender, or at least top 25 contender in any sport it wishes to have that success in. In fact it is already ranked in at least a dozen sports, the only one missing with such success was football.

Money isnt an issue, really. I doubt they would pay 3M per year for Butch, but Butch would lose way to much money leaving UNC after 2 seasons, and he is already integrally involved in the planning and building of the closing in of the end zone. He pretty much has the final word on anything football, and complete control of the program. The AD wouldnt dare attempt to cross him nor contradict him.

Davis' kids are getting older, he doesnt want to move them around as much, they are in a very good school system in Chapel Hill, and he wants to be in a position that allows his children to have he best future as they can. This is difficult to do if you consider a parent looking in the best interest of their kids higher education, especially in the high school years. Its easiest if he stays in the same school district, more so if his kids stay at the same school. Anything else would be more of a detriment than a benefit.

UNC is an easy school to recruit players to who can leave the University with a highly credible degree from a Public Ivy University. Its also realistic for those who can play college ball but in reality, wont make it to the Pro's. Although that isnt really determined until they get in to their latter years of college, but just like the NCAA commercial says, millions of athletes go on to be pros in something else besides sports. UNC is one of the few Universities that can provide sound and an even elitist academic experience with nationally competitive sports programs.

Its easy for Davis to recruit for UNC, its that plain and simple. The academic benefits as well as being a top 25 ranked program consistently (looking in to the future here) make his job much less stressful.

Im kind of medically high right now so I apologize if the post is poorly written or explained.

Dude thats not my words, theyve been called that for about a decade. They are consistently tied for the top 5 public universities in the nation. Theyve earned that title. Of course NCSU fans may not like it, but you cannot deny the academic prestige and reputation of UNC. For fucks sake NCSU used to be in the top 25 in the region for engineering. I dont know if they still are but that sure as hell counts for something in my book. In the same light I dont go out of my way to discredit that.

Look for yourselves:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_North_Carolina_at_Chapel_Hill

Quote :
"The university is the oldest in, and flagship of, the University of North Carolina system. First enrolling students in 1795, UNC is the oldest public university in the United States and is one of the original eight schools known as a Public Ivy."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Ivy

Quote :
"
Public Ivy is a term coined by Richard Moll in his 1985 book Public Ivys: A Guide to America's best public undergraduate colleges and universities to refer to universities which "provide an Ivy League collegiate experience at a public school price."

...

The original eight Public Ivies

The original eight Public Ivies list by Moll (1985):[2]

* University of California[6]
* College of William & Mary (Williamsburg, Virginia)
* Miami University (Oxford, Ohio)
* University of Michigan (Ann Arbor)
* University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
* University of Texas at Austin
* University of Vermont (Burlington)
* University of Virginia (Charlottesville)

Moll also offered in the same book "a list of worthy runners-up" and brief summaries of them[7]:

* University of Colorado at Boulder
* Georgia Institute of Technology
* University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
* New College of the University of South Florida (Now New College of Florida)
* Pennsylvania State University at University Park
* University of Pittsburgh
* State University of New York at Binghamton
* University of Washington at Seattle
* University of Wisconsin–Madison
"

And it goes on to newer info on the title and members of "Public Ivy" schools.

Like it or not, and you certainly dont have to like it, but UNC is an Ivy league education. We can review their academic credentials if you guys want.

Dont shoot the messenger...

Shit, 6 schools from the UC system, that list is retarded. It's 13 schools, not 8. Who cares anyways, I graduated from a "Public Ivy", if I told anyone else that I'd kick my own ass.

^ Its the 8 originals, then the "worthy runners up", which means they didnt make the original list. In other words the runners up got 2nd place while the original 8 were all 1st place. Jesus, its not that hard to comprehend.

The updated list is on the wiki site, broken down by region.

the quality of student entering unc is not even close to any ivy league school, and neither is the value of the degree.

let me ask you this, which ivy league schools would you turn down for unc on an academic basis, all other things being equal, and money not being an issue?

The whole basis for the term public ivy is because of the ivy league equivalent education for a public school price.

Your question debunks the whole premise of the classification.

But anyways, to answer your question, I would turn all the Ivy schools down, and only consider those who taught biomedical engineering, or information science, or had a decent information technology (read: not strictly computer science) degree.

I choose the University I attend based on the degree and education I want to learn and achieve. Its ranking is a secondary filter.

Shit, I still might pursue a Masters Syracuse for their networking/telecommunciations degree.

No, it doesnt. Its classified as a Public Ivy, which by definition is in one of my posts above. However should you have missed that small, yet critical detail Ill provide it again.

I realize for me this is like slapping around a 2 year old, but any person who would deny or discredit the academic prestige of UNC, especially doing so on premise of the inherent hatred of it being a "rival" school (which really isnt true either) is either incompetent or completely ignorant. I can forgive the former but not so much the latter.

I was born and raised a State fan, but my God I dont see how any reasonable person can try to discredit the academic reputation of a proven university.

I love how rankings that are very heavily based on opinion become truth to UNC people. Yeah your school is always ranked high. Lets see why - the people doing the rankings are all journalism majors who want their respective colleges to rank highly.

The true measure of a college should be the success of it's alumni at helping the nation and world improve. Engineers (and I am not saying just NC State engineers) provide much more to humanity than liberal arts majors, politicians, and lawyers. If it weren't the schools of medicine and business , UNC would basically produce a bunch of people who are a drain on society more than a help.

^ you obviously didnt read this: http://www.unc.edu/news/compendium.shtml

You can add the School of Information and Library Science, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, School of Public Health, and College of the Arts and Sciences to that list.

If you think UNC only produces liberal arts majors, politicians, and lawyers you have absolutely no clue what you are talking about nor how silly you just made yourself look.

FYI, you cant major in "liberal arts". Do you even know what the difference is between a Liberal Arts and an Engineering school? Try looking it up, the answer will surprise you.

Quote :

I am certainly not in that bubble, but I also dont deny the obvious.

In fact Im working closely with one of the Deans of the school to rewrite one of the undergraduate curriculums in networking as it is about to undergo a huge overhaul. I cant speak any further on it than that, but certainly I see room for improvement in the academic side by nature of my time and effort in that project.

It might help you to understand the basis of the rankings for the name of "Public Ivy" instead of just blabbering like a frustrated 3 year old.

Do you want to dispute all the other rankings it has been given by various agencies? I would offer that letting go of your ignorance and hatred of UNC as a basis of your opinion would be more beneficial to your credibility than not.

^^Have you ever attended an Ivy League school? (No, Im not attacking you by any means)

I only ask because the creator and founder of the term did. His credentials are also on par with his ability to rank schools with said Ivy Universities.

They arent saying Public Ivy == Ivy, and even that is blatantly obvious in any of the popular rankings. What is said is that it is as close as it gets academically and aesthetically to going to an actual Ivy school.

Not speaking directly to you, but if others were to slow down and not be so quick to say, "UNC OMG WTFever LMAO !!!!ELEVENTYONE!~~!" they might realize the appropriate contexts of the statements.

The term "Public Ivy" as mentioned in the Wiki article is used a lot for recruiting purposes. Its also an indicator to how long the school has been around, the traditions, academic performance/excellence of the school, among other things. Its not by any means a popularity contest, but the reasoning for it is legit.

Quote :

Okay now you are just an ignorant idiot. That list provides sources for its information that it lists. Would you prefer UNC Asheville to write it? I just lost 5 IQ points trying to figure out the logic behind such a stupid post.

I dont think one is superior than the other, well... I kinda do because of the US News rankings etc, but like in statistics you have to think in context. Engineering University vs Liberal Arts school. They arent really comparable.

I was in biomed engineering until I almost flunked out of UNC but hell, I think anyone can admit that program is a fucking bitch.

Its ironic you mention that comment about NCSU students. I actually applied to both and got in to UNC and not NCSU. I had a 2.7 gpa from HS and a 940 on my SAT. LOL people here are so pissed when I tell them that. Sometimes I tell them over and over just to remind them I actually got laid before I got to college while they were memorizing 1000 page SAT books."

Noooooo

Im just saying that UNC is in a unique position to recruit top athletes in part due to its academic reputation as well as its athletic reputation.

It has nearly, if not over a dozen varsity sports ranked consistently in the top 25. Football was lacking and it seems that's going to be turned around in a very short time.

Its hard to argue against the profile of the school unless your a completely blindsided fanboy.

That's why I think Davis will stay, that's why I think he has no motivation (other than salary) to go anywhere else.

^ I don't know why you're laughing, though I do find humor that I got in; although I have been contacted to visit a few Ivy's with Masters programs that I am interested in. So obviously Im not too far off the radar.

To add I wasn't seriously considering college right out of high school anyways, so I dont know why you try to make that comparison. I didn't get serious about academics until after community college and a few years in the military.

Academic money is separate from sports money, it doesn't matter how good of a school UNC is or how much they have in endowment, the football team won't see any of that anyway AFAIK.

No, they are pretty much the same considering the athletic fees built in to the "fees" part of the "tuition and fees" you have to pay each semester.

How much mony? ... that depends on the success the football team gains through bowls, etc and the attention that ensues.

The university has a 2 billion dollar comptroller report last time I looked, circa 2005. Im sure its grown, and the university is letting in more students now. Consider that their tuition and fees also support athletics.

^ Because there are other factors to consider other than mere numbers when deciding to allow someone in to a University... In fact I didnt even apply to a University (other than the local community college) until 4 years AFTER I graduated from HS.

If I had to recall, based on my graduating class size and the section of SAT prep we offered, I think only about 15% of my graduating class took our SAT prep course and I doubt many who werent interested in that spent any time studying on their own...In my close group of friends I dont know one person who studied for even a minute for the SAT.

Honestly, yea I do. I took it my Junior year twice IIRC, then never really looked back. I didnt know what I wanted to do, so I wasnt going to rush in to college without a plan. I went to CC, the military, and over that 4-5 year period I figured out what I wanted. Although I think that started to materialize in CC.

^^ Thats awesome

6 Yea Davidson is a bitch and a solid candidate for one school is easily a candidate for the other.

However I dont think any of you have any idea how much UNC and Duke collaborate on research and academics.

They arent as far apart as you think. The major difference is that I dont think Duke has as many 200 person classes as UNC does. The class size at UNC for some of the classes is definitely discouraging.

Shit, UNC houses more students in its dorms than Dukes entire Undergraduate population.

If Duke can cover 100% of financial aid for its students, Im sure Davidson could do the same.

Not choosing to go to a prestigious school like that because of the cost of such, especially given scholarships and financial aid, is a decision based on short sightedness, and certainly not thorough decision making.
