Dude thats not my words, theyve been called that for about a decade. They are consistently tied for the top 5 public universities in the nation. Theyve earned that title. Of course NCSU fans may not like it, but you cannot deny the academic prestige and reputation of UNC. For fucks sake NCSU used to be in the top 25 in the region for engineering. I dont know if they still are but that sure as hell counts for something in my book. In the same light I dont go out of my way to discredit that. Look for yourselves:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_North_Carolina_at_Chapel_Hill

Shit, 6 schools from the UC system, that list is retarded. It's 13 schools, not 8. Who cares anyways, I graduated from a "Public Ivy", if I told anyone else that I'd kick my own ass.[Edited on November 4, 2008 at 11:42 AM. Reason : a]
11/4/2008 11:37:44 AM
^ Its the 8 originals, then the "worthy runners up", which means they didnt make the original list. In other words the runners up got 2nd place while the original 8 were all 1st place. Jesus, its not that hard to comprehend. The updated list is on the wiki site, broken down by region.[Edited on November 4, 2008 at 11:41 AM. Reason : .]

the quality of student entering unc is not even close to any ivy league school, and neither is the value of the degree.let me ask you this, which ivy league schools would you turn down for unc on an academic basis, all other things being equal, and money not being an issue?

I love how rankings that are very heavily based on opinion become truth to UNC people. Yeah your school is always ranked high. Lets see why - the people doing the rankings are all journalism majors who want their respective colleges to rank highly. The true measure of a college should be the success of it's alumni at helping the nation and world improve. Engineers (and I am not saying just NC State engineers) provide much more to humanity than liberal arts majors, politicians, and lawyers. If it weren't the schools of medicine and business , UNC would basically produce a bunch of people who are a drain on society more than a help.
11/4/2008 12:00:16 PM
i'm not trying to discredit unc's academics, i'm just trying to get you a little out of the 'unc is the best school ever' bubble that so many of their graduates seem to be in.[Edited on November 4, 2008 at 12:01 PM. Reason : oh i'm feeding the troll as well. can't forget that.]

^^^DIPSHIT IT IS ONE MAN'S OPINION AND A TERM HE MADE UP. IT IS NOT FACT. STFU.UCLA is a better school nationally and has a far better reach internationally, and it wasn't listed in that guy's TOP 16 FUCKING SCHOOLS. UNC is a good school. Public Ivy is the gayest thing I have heard today.GTFO[Edited on November 4, 2008 at 12:04 PM. Reason : j]

^ you obviously didnt read this: http://www.unc.edu/news/compendium.shtmlYou can add the School of Information and Library Science, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, School of Public Health, and College of the Arts and Sciences to that list.If you think UNC only produces liberal arts majors, politicians, and lawyers you have absolutely no clue what you are talking about nor how silly you just made yourself look.FYI, you cant major in "liberal arts". Do you even know what the difference is between a Liberal Arts and an Engineering school? Try looking it up, the answer will surprise you.

^^I am blubbering and you are quoting a 23 year old list that is inaccurate and compendium written by the school itself.
11/4/2008 12:13:49 PM
^^Have you ever attended an Ivy League school? (No, Im not attacking you by any means)I only ask because the creator and founder of the term did. His credentials are also on par with his ability to rank schools with said Ivy Universities. They arent saying Public Ivy == Ivy, and even that is blatantly obvious in any of the popular rankings. What is said is that it is as close as it gets academically and aesthetically to going to an actual Ivy school. Not speaking directly to you, but if others were to slow down and not be so quick to say, "UNC OMG WTFever LMAO !!!!ELEVENTYONE!~~!" they might realize the appropriate contexts of the statements. The term "Public Ivy" as mentioned in the Wiki article is used a lot for recruiting purposes. Its also an indicator to how long the school has been around, the traditions, academic performance/excellence of the school, among other things. Its not by any means a popularity contest, but the reasoning for it is legit.
11/4/2008 12:16:18 PM
It's ok man, if Davis left for some reason, Saban & Carroll will be falling over each other for the right to coach at unc
11/4/2008 12:18:00 PM
11/4/2008 12:18:41 PM
NooooooIm just saying that UNC is in a unique position to recruit top athletes in part due to its academic reputation as well as its athletic reputation. It has nearly, if not over a dozen varsity sports ranked consistently in the top 25. Football was lacking and it seems that's going to be turned around in a very short time. Its hard to argue against the profile of the school unless your a completely blindsided fanboy. That's why I think Davis will stay, that's why I think he has no motivation (other than salary) to go anywhere else.^ I don't know why you're laughing, though I do find humor that I got in; although I have been contacted to visit a few Ivy's with Masters programs that I am interested in. So obviously Im not too far off the radar. To add I wasn't seriously considering college right out of high school anyways, so I dont know why you try to make that comparison. I didn't get serious about academics until after community college and a few years in the military. [Edited on November 4, 2008 at 12:24 PM. Reason : .]

Back to sports talk PLZ!!Academic money is separate from sports money, it doesn't matter how good of a school UNC is or how much they have in endowment, the football team won't see any of that anyway AFAIK.[Edited on November 4, 2008 at 12:25 PM. 6 Yea Davidson is a bitch and a solid candidate for one school is easily a candidate for the other. However I dont think any of you have any idea how much UNC and Duke collaborate on research and academics. They arent as far apart as you think. The major difference is that I dont think Duke has as many 200 person classes as UNC does. The class size at UNC for some of the classes is definitely discouraging.Shit, UNC houses more students in its dorms than Dukes entire Undergraduate population.[Edited on November 4, 2008 at 12:41 PM. If Duke can cover 100% of financial aid for its students, Im sure Davidson could do the same. Not choosing to go to a prestigious school like that because of the cost of such, especially given scholarships and financial aid, is a decision based on short sightedness, and certainly not thorough decision making.
