Is there a key development in music that you would consider a necessary evil, such that it helped good musicians make better music, but enabled those without talent to enter the "scene"?

the tascam 424 eventually led to professional-quality home recording

great for people who can make great music in their homes without the stresses of studio bills

but also a gateway for hacks to make great-sounding recordings that can fool people who don't know any better

please recommend a professional quality, portable audio recorder

also a shotgun mic

i dunno about the recorder...i never had anything portable that was of better quality than minidisc

as for the mic, audio-technica at835b is what my buddy used for a lot of his bootlegging and it worked very well at high pressure levels...dunno if you can still get them though, he bought it in 2002

portable in that it can run on batteries and I can carry it with me - doesn't have to fit in my pocket though

I'm thinking about something from Marantz but they are expensive - my prof recommended a recorder from Olympus but that one doesn't have XLR inputs (he says I can always use an adapter)

great brand
light
runs on batteries
2 xlr inputs WITH phantom power
intsrument input
record multible tracks at once
supposedly decent onboard mixing and mastering

im sure you could find one used for a decent price

nice piece of equipment but it is too much for my purposes

the most I think I'll need now is 2 channels

I won't be recording music with this - just field recordings of sound and interviews

are you doing it for your own purposes, or for something more professional?

if you need high fidelity, you could go with something like a boss micro-br, which is a digital 4-track that's ipod-sized

but if you're just seeing what you can find, you can get the smaller, less feature-laden cassette 4-tracks for like $20 on ebay

and yes, i love michael cera...clark & michael ftw

^^ yes

^ it's a combination of his appropriate phrasing and interaction with charles' playing as a rhythm/lead combo as well as the fact that the timbre of his les paul is a very good foil for charles' telecaster

Does it hurt our friendship if I'm a Caps fan (I'm from MD)?

At the end of the season last year, did the Caps (barely) make it to the playoffs because they were good or because Carolina got unlucky?

I changed my mind and wish to cancel my previous question.

This isn't just for VB, it's for any asshole who's reading this thread.

We periodically do a mix tape club at work, with every participant making a mix based on a theme. Past themes/concepts have been:
Sexy music
Death, darkness, and things that are darker than the blackest black times infinity
Colors and shapes
Time travel

Can anybody think of a new theme to do? Otherwise I'm just going to do a free for all, but I like having the themes because it's really interesting to see the intersections and divergences on different mixes on the same theme.

Would you be up for an epic hangout with GenghisJohn, Dammit100, poomonkey, and myself? It could be called the 328 Man Date, or something less gay.

I'll take "Greco-Roman wrestling" out of the itinerary to make it less gay and replace it with a trip to "Pure Gold".
