Blacks are coming out of the Jim-Crow era of poverty imposed on them at a fairly healthy pace. In the past 40 years, white math scores increased 14 points while blacks increased 34 points, and they are matched for relative growth rates (IOW both groups stagnate or accelerate over the same periods). There is clearly not any "extra" amount of disinterest in education among the black community. It may seem that way to certain people because they choose to embrace their prejudices and ignore history and reality though.

It would be unprecedented if their achievement score as a group simply shot up instantly to the levels of existing white society, post-segregation. You can say, and even delude yourself in to thinking that blacks simply don't care about certain things, but the reality is that you're wrong. Just don't pass your bitterness on to your kids (that goes for anyone).

I want to respond to what BridgetSPK said on page 1 about how it has to do with it being up near a golf course and it being their school.....

Do you even know what you're talking about? I went to Wakefield back when it had just opened. The number of people who actually lived in Wakefield compared to the people who came in from surrounding areas was smaller than you'd think. There was a very good blend of people there, all races and socio-economic classes of people. The ENTIRE student body back then was between 900-1100 students and it created an environment where a lot of people were familiar with many others.....

Fast forward to current years where the freshmen cannot even be "housed" on campus and have to be bussed to an old Winn-Dixie in WakeForest......where the school is literally packed as tight as it can with students......

So obviously this has to do with a small number of silver-spoon teenagers hating on the majority of other students....nothing to do with the fact that when you pack that many hormonally unbalanced humans into such a small place you're bound to have conflicts.....

In conclusion, Bridget is just as bad as these people on here saying that the "n-ers" need to be taken out back and shot.

As a taxpayer I would be all for footing the bill to build a huge residential boarding school that all of the gang banging punks (by law) would go to when they got kicked out of public school for violent acts.

Then people could stop whining that "omg don't put them on the street that is only gonna make them worse". I mean I agree with the notion that we are playing in to their hands by just expelling them. Since they do not want to be in school anyway, but if I had a kid I would want him shielded from these losers at least until he is out of high school.

I think that would take some of the glory out of joining a gang and/or getting expelled. Instead of having all the free time you want you would have zero free time and would still be in school. These kids are obviously making horrible decisions so it would be good for some adults to make all decisions for them.

The thing is though after 16 yrs of age they can legally drop out. What many don't realize
is often those who could drop out that don't; stay in school for alternative reasons than to get an education. With free breakfast and free lunch this may be the only hot meal if meal at all they get. Also,
a school environment provides a great opportunity for drug dealing.

I agree with the VMI like school program. Instil into troubled youths discipline that which
they often lack at home which is the real reason behind the "thug-life" mentality. A great example

I just thought it would be a good time to make my point about naming schools after neighborhoods. It can create bad school atmospheres. Wakefield is one of those schools with a bad atmosphere--I've witnessed it myself in recent years. You're wrong that Wakefield started off as a diverse a school. In 2003 (not even the first year it opened), 11 percent of the students were on free and reduced price lunch. In 2007, 17 percent are. You can see how the school is changing, and how maybe having a different, more neutral name would have been a good idea?

I wouldn't be bothered by it, except it's still happening. HERITAGE. A school named Heritage after a largely white golf course community. Unless you live in Heritage, would you really want to go to that school?

And, Locke, I agree that starting the school off with a reasonable number of students and then stuffing it full causes problems, too. Just so you know that's how it works at every other new school in Wake County.

But you're crazy if you suggest that my sitting in judgment of your school's atmopshere is the same thing as saying some niggers need to be taken out back and shot.

I've met people who talk about the spoiled, rich kids at Wakefield, and all of them say the same, old tired line about "You know, then there's those kids who drive Daddy's BMW to school..." As if Wakefield is the only neighborhood where people drive BMWs and as if there's something inherently wrong about driving a car you didn't pay for. That kind of talk is just stupid.

The bussed in hood rats thing is really tired, too, because it's not true. I grew up in the WCPSS, and I can say that without a doubt all kids from all neighborhoods acted a fool...because they're kids.

And I definitely don't think Wakefield is going "downhill" at all. As a population gets larger, the closer it gets to the mean. A small school could be really bad or really good on the curve, but either way, as it gets larger, it always moves to the middle. This trend is observable at every other school in Wake County. Plus, it's a basic rule of statistics. Unfortunately, people don't know basic stats so they run with shit about how things are going downhill.

I do think Wakefield got screwed because of the name thing. It implies that the school belongs to the neighborhood, and even though we all know it doesn't, the name is still there. It sometimes can divide the student body. So some graduates, like the four in my SOC class, end up saying ridiculous stuff about black kids having to take entrance exams to go there!!! It's a public school that belongs to everybody, and they should have named it so.

Just a little history into the matter...when private developers were first building Wakefield, they offered to also build a public school in the neighborhood with their money, and in exchange, they wanted WCPSS to agree to make it a neighborhood school. So, basically, they wanted to pay for the building costs of a public school (public, in that taxpayers would pay for the operating costs), but they also wanted the school to be private and off-limits to people who didn't live in the area. Of course, WCPSS said no to their offer, but they still named the damn school they put there Wakefield!

And the Heritage situation still blows my mind. HERITAGE?!?!

Plus, I'm bothered by the Southeast Raleigh thing, too. When that school was being built, they wanted to name it after a famous educator, but naming schools after people is no longer allowed--Broughton and Enloe, two other excellent magnents, get to keep their names though. So, instead of naming it after a person, they named it Southeast Raleigh...they might as well have named it the Less Affluent Part of Raleigh High School.
