Last night I got about 11 hours of sleep. That was because I got 0.0 hours of sleep the night before and hadn't slept in about 42 hours.

meh when i was up to like 5 days and under 20 hours of sleep i started having closed eye visual disturbances, thought i was going crazy.
7/10/2008 2:27:21 AM
Yeah, I've gotten stuff like that a few times when I've gone several days in a row with three hours of sleep or less. It's not fun at all.Have you tried any meds or anything for your sleep?
7/10/2008 2:30:36 AM
i reaaally don't want to mess with meds.
7/10/2008 2:45:30 AM
I've tried melatonin, still I stay up for 72-96hr stretches, then go out for 8 hours. Another stretch and so on. I can drink til I pass out, but I only pass out for 2-3hrs, wake up feeling like shit with higher tolerance of alcohol. Anything else I can try? I am not looking to self-medicate with narcotics, btw.

I've had sleep trouble for at least the last 10 years, and haven't used any meds for it for the last 8; it's just something I deal with, and its severity comes and goes. I don't really like the idea of taking medication for most things, but it turns out that my parents hid a history of sleep, depression and anxiety disorders from me until within the last year or so.I was pretty bitter about it, given that family history is pretty important to know about when dealing with your mental health, and I was diagnosed with two types of depression back in 2003. It would have been extremely helpful when going through my treatment options to know what my parents responded to. But I mentioned this weekend in an email that my sleep problems had gotten worse in the last few months, and now all of a sudden my mom sends me a month's supply of sleep meds in the mail that have worked for both of them.I'm a bit conflicted about whether or not I should give them a try. I don't like the idea of taking drugs regularly just to get to sleep, but on the other hand, it would be really fucking nice to be able to sleep like a normal person and feel refreshed in the morning; I'm going back to grad school in the fall, so I'll need to have sane hours again soon. But at this point, I've tried every damn home remedy in the book, so I'm running out of "natural" options.

do the drugs!!!I was skeptical but now I'm totally for it! Granted I haven't gone to a doctor to get the prescription ones, I have gotten a few from a friend here and there, and they are lovely!!! Best sleep ever I'm the one that takes 3 hours to fall asleep and then I wake up every 45 minutes or so. The sleep aids help me sleep a little longer between waking up in the middle of the night.
7/14/2008 8:37:13 AM
having work off makes this like 800 times worse... I don't even have a reason to go to sleep now.

FUCK!I have a bottle of flexerol in my drawer. Muscle relaxers. Would put me to sleep instantly. But I have an 8 am class. I wouldn't wake up in time. FUCK! At least this way there's no dreams of zombies.

So I was visiting with friends this weekend at Virginia Tech, and I told one of them about how my sleep issues have gotten worse, since I used to live with her and she knew my history. She mentioned that she read an article recently about delayed sleep phase syndrome, and she sent me a link to it on Wikipedia yesterday. It describes my symptoms really quite well, aside from a few details; self-diagnosis based on Wikipedia and WebMD is always a dangerous thing, especially with a rare syndrome such as this, but I never knew such a thing existed. I'm probably going to try out some of the treatment options mentioned and see if I can talk to a real doctor about it.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delayed_sleep_phase_syndrome[Edited on July 15, 2008 at 4:11 AM. cant sleep
7/15/2008 4:12:58 AM
For the last week, I have just found myself going to bed between 3 and 4am, and waking up around 10:30am.My sleep cycle got shifted somewhere.
7/15/2008 4:17:10 AM
SIGNED.I'm still a part of this club. This'll go away as soon I start the job (2-4 weeks). Once I have financial security again and some things to do I'll be tired enough at night that sleep between 10-12pm won't be an issue.
7/15/2008 4:19:27 AM
past 5am, so it's time to give the bed a shot.

didnt sleep at all last night. dont think im gonna try now.
7/17/2008 6:27:45 AM
fuuuuuck. took a sleeping pill around 3:10am so I could be asleep by 4am and get some decent sleep tonight. Instead, it's 5.30am, I'm still up, but I'm mildly nauseous, having visual hallucinations (minor in nature), and loopy enough that I can't type worth shit. This post is taking some real effort to pull off without egregious typos everywhere. fuck these pills, I think they're just to make you feel bad enough to lie down within 30 minutes, and that's how they put you out. this shit here is for the birds.
7/21/2008 5:28:45 AM
pull an all nighter, all the cool kids are doing itbut reallyi have nothing to do tomorrow except for a whopping '2 page critical response' so im just staying up. my sleep schedule is so fucked, it needs a little shaping up. i should be good for two weeks, fingers crossed

7/22/2008 5:58:26 AM
I just reread my post about taking the Ambien; I don't remember the hallucinations, so they must have been really minor. It definitely made me feel like shit, though, so no more of that.Got another morning meeting at work today, so I decided just to stay up again. No sleep for the wicked.
7/23/2008 7:14:50 AM
ambien is definitely FTW
7/23/2008 7:15:44 AM
cam eback.
8/1/2008 3:07:41 AM
i have to be awake in 4 hours should i bother going to sleep?
8/1/2008 3:52:07 AM
For me at least, if I get anything less than four hours of sleep, I feel worse than if I just hadn't gone to bed at all. Dunno what your usual cutoff on that is, though. It probably also depends on if you have anything important going on tomorrow afternoon.
8/1/2008 3:54:50 AM
idk but i'll be working from like 3:30 to 12 as well.will probably just not go to that shit at 9 tomorrow morning.
8/1/2008 3:56:37 AM
I've been trying some sleep therapy thing where once a week, you stay up all night to shock your system, then don't take a nap the next day at all and go to bed an hour before you normally do. Supposedly, if you stick religiously to trying to go to bed at the same time all week long, you can repeat the process each week gradually moving your bedtime up until it's sane again.I'm having mixed results, now being the second week. I started out last week going from 5.30am to 4.30am, which worked alright. This week though, I'm only getting to around 4am instead of 3.30am. I think partly I'm having trouble because I'm so used to doing things at night that I've come to sort of enjoy having my Me Time late at night, and don't really want to go to bed much earlier.Anyway, gonna try and hit the sack for the night, being that it's 4am. Hopefully I'll drift off semi-quickly.
8/1/2008 4:01:07 AM
^every time i try to stay up throughout the nite & not take a nap the next day, i end up falling asleep & fucking myself over even worse
8/1/2008 4:02:00 AM
8/1/2008 4:03:14 AM
^^I've pulled enough all-nighters on account of morning meetings at work that my body actually copes really well with it; I'll usually get a tired spell at around 10pm for an hour, but then I hit a second wind all the way through til bedtime. I'd rather just go to bed at 10pm some of those nights, but I know that if I did it wouldn't be a sustainable change. I'd just sleep for 12 hours or whatever and then be right back to 5am bedtimes; supposedly it's the gradualness of this therapy that makes it work. We shall see.^Ray!
