have they provided a way to monitor your bw usage?
4/2/2009 9:53:32 AM
Yes - they have a website you can go to and see your usage. It will be linked to your account login with http://www.selfcare.rr.com[Edited on April 2, 2009 at 10:04 AM. Reason : a]

Why not just do like everyone else and drop TWC. That seems like the thing to do these days. I did it myself months ago, and a friend said the other week that there was a line out the door of people turning in equipment. Apparently the recession is helping to unclog the internet a bit.
4/2/2009 10:10:36 AM
did you go to DSL?my 1-year special-rates just expired on RR. I'm either going to switch, or at least going to figure our some prices for DSL or earthlink or whatever so I can call RR and see if they'll match them
4/2/2009 10:14:33 AM
Time Warner will give you back the discount, I don't think they match prices exactly. I did this successfully, and it's time to do it again I think. All I did was get the dish page up and said I was considering switching because of the price difference between what I had and their base package price.
4/2/2009 10:23:03 AM
So they went through with it huh? I imagine TWC customers that care will make the switch... until the competition gets on board and there's nowhere to turn.

Screw TWC as soon as AT&T rolls out to this neighborhood I'm switching. You'd think they'd realize with the number of tech people in this area that this would probably be a suicide move. Also with AT&T now being a relative competitor why screw your customers even more and make them jump ship?Oh wait, it's TWC, that's why.[Edited on April 2, 2009 at 4:11 PM. Reason : dumb-ass-hattery]

For all of you saying you will switch to ATT, they announced they will be switching to metered bandwidth as well in several areas. No news on Raleigh yet but its coming Im sure.Do like me, move back on campus. Free Internet that pwns all you and electricity FTW!</geek>[Edited on April 2, 2009 at 4:17 PM. Reason : !]

Or leach off all your neighbors wifi one by one until everyone around you is maxed out. AT&T would be smart to not roll that shit out here. They'd get a huge influx of customers pissed off at TWC.[Edited on April 2, 2009 at 4:23 PM. Reason : -]

What is the cap being trialed? 5 GB/month? 40 GB/month?
4/2/2009 4:36:12 PM
To those of you who have dropped TWC did you get e-bill reminders? I am still getting them for 0.00 bills. Apparently they left my online account active even though im not using them. They said I had to call support to turn it off but I don't feel like waiting 2 hours on hold just to turn off an auto emailer. I suppose people like me are why they have no bandwith. Emailing to people who don't even use their service anymore.
4/2/2009 4:44:28 PM
4/2/2009 4:47:17 PM
I'd say on average I use about 8 GB per month, but if torrent a few things or grab some Linux ISOs that number can go way up.

i think people are missing the whole theory behind metered internet, and what effect it could possibly have in the futureNOT having to worry about your usage, how big a file is, how long a movie is, how big an email attachment is, etc - IS why the internet is what it is todaywe live in the land of unlimited weekend minutes, free drink refills, unlimited fortune cookies at pei wei, and all-you-can-eat salad bars - Americans do NOT like being metered, even if they wont come anywhere near the upper limits
4/2/2009 8:19:43 PM
Interesting fact: TWC would be happy to lose all of you as customers.
4/2/2009 8:21:08 PM
If they charged you less for using less, then I could take being charged more for going over. But it's pure bullshit that they charge you if you go over.
4/2/2009 8:25:23 PM
well they do have a tiered pricing structure.... and there ARE fixed costs you have to pay for. Even the natural gas company charges a minimum of $15/mo even if you don't use any.
4/2/2009 8:42:11 PM
^that can't be right. My rents pay ~$5-$7 a month for their gas bill on average.
4/2/2009 8:51:37 PM
It's like they have a different gas company or something.

4/2/2009 9:07:25 PM
i have nothing constructive to add other than saying fuck TWC
4/2/2009 9:11:38 PM
What I think will happen is TWC will continue to expand their own backbone and offer local caching services (for a reasonable fee of course) to companies like hulu. The content hosted there or tied into their backbone would be immune to the caps. The effective result being prices for users would stay the same, performances is better due to local caches, and rr makes some $texas off the content providers.
4/2/2009 9:14:00 PM
^^ I actually found that incredibly constructive as I too hate TWC with a passion ^That would be reasonable. However TWC is known for screwing over their users at any chance and would probably attempt to raise their rates without the need, while still getting money from the content providers.
4/2/2009 9:17:55 PM
yea, they would probably charge an extra $10/mo to the consumer for "super" turbo on select sites
4/2/2009 9:20:03 PM
Putting it on the consumer wont work. Theres only so much blood you can get from that stone. In the case of Hulu the content is already created and owned by the companies involved (fox, nbc, etc...). Their biggest cost is going to be their own bandwidth out to the internet. Thats where the money is and thats where TWC wants to go. If they offer cap-free caching services then Hulu's options are a) hope local laws loosen up and allow more local isp competition (lol) b) pay TWC to cache their content c) replace their current backbone provider with TWC.Over time tier 1 backbones (AT&T, verizon, et. all) will realise twc is eating their lunch and either do the same thing (content caching) or try to come up with a mutual agreement. Like say Hulu is on twc and youtub is on verizon, they go "Hey i'll trade u my utubs for ur hulus". Either way the network providers and content providers are battling it out for access to the other's customers. This would create more competition in the already competitive provider market. Right now I have 2 ISP networks i can pick from (twc and fairpoint(lol))> Luckily for me TWC maine is actually really good. However, for my datacenter I can pick between twc, fairpoint, verizon, at&t, and any of the resellers who run off their networks. If any competition is going to occur its going to be on the supply side.

4/3/2009 12:18:29 AM
You have to be really naive to think that this is anything less than a shitbag of a company exercising monopoly power where it can. This will not work anywhere where there is any competition ... which is why the government, obama, whoever should do everything possible to expose service providers to the maximum amount of competition. The long-lingering regional monopolies we hare are fucking stupid and are holding broadband back. The areas where you have fios, several cable providers, and several dsl providers are the best areas for broadband customers. It's really simple what's going on, and it boggles my mind that there are apologist idiots up here who have nothing to do with the company.[Edited on April 3, 2009 at 12:36 AM. Reason : .]
4/3/2009 12:31:10 AM
^ its not like there's a bunch of companies out there clamoring to build the infrastructure necessary to offer alternativesI really don't understand what you are trying to advocate here. It's not like there's some sort of magic solution that makes it cheaper to offer the same service from scratch.
4/3/2009 12:35:53 AM
this thread is full of people who are mad that their massive use of bandwidth will no longer be subsidized by normal people who don't bit-torrent or whatever the new piracy tool is.

4/3/2009 9:15:46 AM
So the plan for AT&T is to wait until all the TWC customers make the switch, then start up their own metered usage plan with slightly cheaper rates than TWC. That way they would be less likely to lose customer back to TWC and probably still experience a continual influx of people making the switch.
4/3/2009 9:19:58 AM
i wouldnt mind the caps if the pricing structure was lower.but 5 GB is retarded. I think the smallest cap should start out at least 20 and go from there
