shiny white vans either time didn't want to put in the work required to get us installed. joe blow local contractor hooked it up quite nicely with the exception of drilling into our living room rather than running to our junction box (cable length issue). I even gave him 30 bucks under the table for burying and hiding the extra length of cable and fixing one of our busted runs of rg6 in the living room.I got free superfan though because the white van people were shady fools.PS AVS forums aligns with what joe blow told us. What package is everyone switching to once their Premier promo from the sunday ticket runs out?
12/1/2008 7:55:05 AM
My HR-21 is shitting the bed. That didn't take longWhen i watch some DVR'd shows, it will lock up and stutter at random spots.and sometimes during live TV it'll stutter to the point that it's not watchable.it's particularly pissing my girlfriend off, who DVRs a ton of girly shit to watch later. Called Dtv and they said format and if it happens again, they'll replace the unit.Great customer service, shitty equipment.[Edited on December 2, 2008 at 12:34 PM. choice xtra + hd is what I'm switching to, should have me down to ~$55/month
12/2/2008 6:49:02 PM
DirecTV increasing rates march 09? Will that let me get out of 2yr contract?
2/7/2009 4:25:17 PM
i talked to a dtv rep the other day and i'm almost eligible for a free hardware upgrade. she couldn't give me any details (e.g. when? how long til you're eligible? etc). she said very soon...but the main point. A Tivo option for DirecTV. she said many customers request Tivo so they're adding a Tivo HD DVR and I can swap out one of my receivers for that one for free. pretty big news imo. i've been really happy with dtv.

you should look into getting an OTA antenna for your direcTV box. I have an HR20-100 which has an ATSC tuner built-in (if you have other boxes, there are adapters) and now have all of the local HD/SD channels on my box and in the guide. it's great.
3/23/2009 3:10:33 PM
Most will have the HR-21, which if you can pull off some low level social engineering you can scoop the AM-21 addon for free.I really hope I can trade my HDDVR for a Tivo unit, I cannot stand the laggy interface on HR21.
3/23/2009 3:15:02 PM
You would switch from Directv to TWC for pbs?Is watching Nova in HD THAT important?
3/23/2009 3:20:06 PM
Yes, it is. There are episodes of Nova that are as pretty and brilliant as Planet Earth (like tomorrow's episode). Also, I watch Frontline (PBS) and a few other shows on NBC. Outside of that, I really don't care much for TV now that BSG is over.
3/24/2009 12:02:03 AM
Ok I see your point.I don't think I watch anything but 4 channels either.
3/24/2009 12:14:48 AM
How do you know if a show is new or not by looking at the guide? I set up the DVR to record first runs only and it's recording re-run episodes...TWC's box would have "New" after the info, but the HR-22 doesn't seem to show that info.

What's everyone's best NFL Sunday Ticket price this year after jumping on the promo last year? They auto renewed me for 147/month with Choice+. I called and my bill is 108 now with 6mo showtime 3mo. starz. It's like 24.99 for Sunday Ticket/Superfan/SHO/STZUnfortunately I couldn't hop on this year's new customer promo which is simply amazing, it's like 55 dollars a month with 5 months free Premier (all 265+ channels) with a 95% chance to get superfan free if it's not included already. HD/DVR/Installation/Nonsense.[plug]If anyone is thinking about signing up and wants to do the 100.00 referral bonus thing let me know.[/plug]
7/31/2009 1:16:54 PM
I ordered Sunday Ticket a few days ago. Basically got the early bird offer + free superfan. Good enough for me, looking forward to the start of the season.

anyone had any experience canceling their service and then signing up again immediately to take advantage of the new customer deals?i'm halfway through my contract and the cancellation fee is $20/month for all remaining months (so $240 for me)it'll be $200 for me to upgrade to an HD-DVR (i'm finally entering the 21st century and getting an HDTV) -- with the new customer incentives, that $40 difference gets made up pretty quickly so i was thinking about canceling and then signing up againthe woman i just spoke with wasn't able to give me an answer on whether there's a waiting period between accounts or anything, so i was wondering if anyone here had any experience with it... it'll probably just be easier to pay for the upgrade but i'm just weighing my options (like also switching to dish network)
8/24/2009 1:58:39 PM
^I canceled 4 months into it because the customer support was so bad. I took a pretty big fee from it, but it was worth it in the long run to me. 2 weeks after I called to get out, they called me back with a deal of about $40/month (instead of $80/month) -- when someone like me gets out so soon they've actually lost about $500 on me, considering that they can't remove the dish from my lawn.
8/24/2009 2:19:32 PM
$200 for an hd-dvr upgrade?!?!?! wtf if you cancel, switch providersdish network ftw. i can hook you up with a referral discount thing if you want. no biggie if you don't.[Edited on August 24, 2009 at 4:50 PM. Reason : ]

8/24/2009 5:40:51 PM
^they'll actually go $150/6 months with free superfan if you ask.
8/24/2009 5:50:01 PM
thanks, once i decide on and buy the tv i'm going to call directv back fully prepared to cancel and switch to dish if they can't come down on that price (it's actually $200 for the HD-DVR but $240 with taxes/shipping which includes the guy that has to come out and change the satellite)either way, i think i'll be pleased -- i'm pretty excited about upgrading my sad 27" tube tv(and if i switch, i'll get your referral ^^^)
8/25/2009 3:08:41 PM
better hope it dont rain
8/25/2009 10:55:57 PM
are you paying $200/240 on top of the monthly dvr fee? the box from dish is free, dvr service is $6/month
8/25/2009 11:21:32 PM
"the box" is free from DirecTV too, just not after you've already used your new customer incentives. Their promo right now beats the shit out of any Dish Network deal with $55.99/5months for the NFL Sunday Ticket and the Premier package. We signed up for this last year when it was 75.99/mo and got the HD DVR receiver and DVR service free. The only shitty thing about DTV is that unlike cell phone companies, when you're at the end of your contract, they won't really extend you the new customer promos -- they'll try and get as close as possible for you, but refuse to go anywhere near this current deal.
8/26/2009 3:10:21 AM
i've never had a problem working the new customer deals. the box isnt free if you're paying for it...right? you dont have to pay for the dish box regardless of when you get it.nfl/sports packages are of no interest to me but i do understand that they are important to other people. if you're interested, i pay $60 (reg price) for the 200+ pack plus silver HD and dvr. the current special for the same is $37 + 10 = $47[Edited on August 26, 2009 at 10:59 AM. 8/26/2009 10:58:44 AM
Dish Network gives you an unlimited number of free HD DVR receivers? We almost went with Dish, but the NFL package is what set DTV apart. I agree that a side by side comparison of typical monthly packages would probably claim Dish as the winner.
8/26/2009 12:12:38 PM
well i've never really needed more than one. i have the dual tuner so it's like have 2 but in one box.
8/26/2009 1:47:14 PM
Heh, the HR21 (DTV flagship) isn't that horrible but I am definitely envious of the DishNetwork DVR software. I hear it's amazing. With the AM-21 addon they sent me last year, I can technically watch/record two with the DVR's dual tuner and then have an external antenna hooked to the addon for a third program. Also HDMI/Composite/Component are all simultaneously live so with an RF remote you can get the classic muli-room same-show functionality pretty easy.
8/26/2009 4:43:53 PM
sweet -- just called directv to cancel and they're giving me the HD-DVR for free, i just have to pay $20 for shipping/installation/new satellite (and the HD programming is $10/month)i might have come out slightly ahead financially by switching with all the new customer incentives, but i'm happy with this resultmy new 50" plasma gets delivered monday morning and the HD upgrade happens that afternoon -- just in time for next thursdays game...
8/27/2009 2:01:00 PM
Lol I was going to do this for my coworker, but he decided to try himself. He ended up accepting a 2 year contract and only getting $100 off the HDDVR with like 3 months of starz.

I took advantage of the retention offer last year for NFL Sunday Ticket, but it was nowhere near as awesome as the new customer incentives. With 99% of cell phone providers, when your contract is up you immediately qualify for all new promotions. I spoke with a couple reps and felt them out on this offering to extend the contract but they all said the same thing. "No."Today I called to let them know I would be moving and no longer keeping the service. I explained my situation in such a way to where the rep really had no opening to give me the 'please stay' 5 minute script. I did however mention that the only reason I signed up was for the NFL ticket. So she lets me know that because I'm moving I automatically qualify for the 59.99 Sunday Ticket and Premier Package offer and I can just cancel after the 5 months. GG DTV, that definitely caught my ear and I asked 2 different times if it would extend my contract. I also have about that much time left on my 10/mo referral so it would bring it down to $49.99/mo for Sunday Ticket + top tier programming w/HDDVR.tl;dr versionI was offered the current $59.99 NFL Sunday Ticket promotion out of contract because I'm moving so if you're a social engineer and not under contract give them a call and maybe you get lucky.http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?sduid=36657&p=31293530#Looks like slickdeals was all over it already and from the few posts I've skimmed it may very well be semi-YMMV for existing customers. Good Luck!--Also, if anyone is thinking about taking advantage of this offer as a new customer PM me for my account number so we can both get the 10/month off for 10 months. $39.99/mo would be sweet! [Edited on August 25, 2010 at 8:04 PM. Reason : im such referral whore]
8/25/2010 7:57:47 PM
^^^my mom doesn't have a landline, nor internet and she has DirecTV
8/25/2010 8:14:18 PM
That automatically added the Sunday Ticket to my account (more fine print, since I got it for free last year as a new customer) on my latest bill, and I got them to take it off. It was great last year for free...but I'm just trying to cut small costs here and there...and I couldn't justify keeping it. It will suck having to go to a bar to catch most of the Chargers' games this year.
8/26/2010 10:37:10 AM
how much will you spend on alcohol at the bar all season
8/26/2010 11:38:41 AM
I thought about that, but I probably just won't go. I use to live a 2-minute walk from the bar that I worked at. So even if I went to the bar, I pretty much ate and drank for free. And now I have a bad-ass Home Theater set-up and a new grill and patio. So even if the Chargers aren't on, I'll probably stay at my house anyways and just keep a lap-top on the side to watch games. And if I go out to the bars to watch a game, it will probably be because a bunch of my friends are already there and I would have gone regardless of whether or not I had NFL Sunday Ticket.
8/26/2010 11:45:22 AM
^^^^^Thanks for posting that, My directTV was going to be installed tomorrow, and i just got off the phone with them and they changed my order to the premier + NFL sunday ticket package. This will still be cheaper than TWC. w00t!
