What antivirus do you have running? I know that Avast causes problems with supersearch.

It's back up. It was down for a couple hours.

Is astraweb still working out for everyone that's tried it? My current 3 month account with UNE expires in 2 days and that $11 a month thing is still going on over at astraweb so I was gonna give them a shot. Anybody had any issues with astraweb so far?
11/11/2008 3:26:08 PM
So the only difference between the 13$ UNS and the 11$ astraweb is that astraweb has a 160 retention, and UNS only has 105?
11/11/2008 3:31:21 PM
I think UNE is growing their retention rate behind the scenes or something because this last week or so I've been able to download some stuff around the 140 day mark with no problems. But yeah, since $11 is still less than $13.33, I'm gonna try out astraweb for at least a month and see how it goes.
11/11/2008 3:53:38 PM
I don't know how dependent this is on his location, but my friend just signed up for Astraweb and he says it takes atleast 6-8 connections to max out his bandwidth (TW standard). With usenetserver i'm able to get a full 10mbit with 2-3 connections. I know this really doesn't matter unless you're sharing your connections. Just thought i'd ask if anyone else has noticed this.[Edited on November 11, 2008 at 4:03 PM. Reason : .]

11/11/2008 8:30:06 PM
^Paying 3 times the cost making you sick, eh?
11/11/2008 9:28:48 PM
Yeah really. I mean retention is great and all. But almost 95% of the time i download something i want right when it comes out. So retention really doesn't matter.
11/11/2008 9:30:01 PM
lol, actually a buddy of mine doesn't use his subscription much at all. I've been whoring that for the past 3 or 4 months since I dropped UNS.
11/11/2008 10:04:24 PM
Well then it's totally worth it. I'm in the reverse situation. I'm going to get at least 3 calls/emails when I change my service provider. I really should start charging everyone that leaches off me a couple of bucks a month.
11/11/2008 10:12:46 PM
Been getting a lot of "502 Your per-user connection limit reached" errors lately with astraweb. It's almost worse than UNS before they got all their shit straightened out. I'm going back to UNS at the end of this month. It's ever so slightly faster and more importantly UNS doesn't care if I log in from multiple ips as long as I don't use more than the 20 allotted connections at a time(and I'm not even sure they mind that)]
12/2/2008 1:46:41 AM
odd, it's never happened to me unless i've really tried using more than 20 total connectionsi can max out my downlink with like 3-4 but i usually give it 13 connections and then save 7 for uploading or if i'm out, then getting stuff while connected on my laptop
12/2/2008 2:25:17 AM
But when you're on a different ip it doesn't let you log in. I tried from my parents house while I was downloading something from mine and it gave me login errors. That alone made me decide to change back to UNS. The 502 thing (which has happened 3-4 times in the last 48 hours) sealed the deal for me.
12/2/2008 3:06:10 AM
Oh wow astraweb doesn't let you download from multiple ips? That almost defeats the purpose of all the connections because i have multiple people using my 10 connections on UNS.
12/2/2008 3:47:13 AM
oh yah, they call that account sharing - that's why hosts charge more for it that let you do it i thinkhitnews.eu is new one for euros that they're all raving about that lets them share accounts
12/2/2008 3:56:58 AM
My friend wants me to help him set up newsgroups. What's the best client for osx? With a supersearch feature built in?
12/16/2008 6:15:39 PM
Unison is about the only OSX client.
12/16/2008 6:47:54 PM
^thanks. He wants something with a supersearch type feature so he doesn't have to update groups/headers etc. Is this available on osx?
12/16/2008 8:24:29 PM
Yes. On my macbook I use this plus this.Works like a charm.
12/16/2008 9:31:52 PM
^so the best solution is a windows program on osx? See this is why i can't switch to apple.
12/17/2008 1:44:40 AM
Well I didn't mean to spark a mac vs pc debate here. But the short answer is no, I didn't find anything written for mac that I liked nearly as much as newsleecher. And I already had fusion installed for kicks, so it was a no brainer for me. But I would probably end up recommending one of those nzb creation/search sites (newzbin?) and whatever osx client you can find that will take nzb files (I'd imagine all of them do)
12/17/2008 1:59:20 AM
I mean i specifically pay for a search feature (3$ month for newsleecher) so i don't have to constantly update headers/groups. Is there no equivalent for OSX?
12/17/2008 2:31:35 AM
Well, that's what I'm saying, I don't think there's a software equivalent for OSX. But if I understand how it works, and I've never used it personally, so I'm not sure here, but web based search sites like Newzbin allow you to search for things like you can in Supersearch and then export your results to an NZB file which you can then import into practically any news client. Personally, I can't imagine it being better than Supersearch, but like I said, I've never used it. joe17669 said on page 1 "However, since I got a subscription to Newzbin, I find myself using that almost 100% now." so that's a pretty strong recommendation from someone who actually has used both. FWIW, UNS offers a similar free web based NZB creation service and I have used it from time to time when Supersearch has been offline and I wasn't that impressed. I'd imagine subscription based sites like Newsbin are much better.]
12/17/2008 2:41:08 AM
^true, i mean http://www.rlslog.net is really all anyone needs, but a overall search feature is still nice.
12/17/2008 2:42:21 AM
Most usenet services have a web based search engine for the indexes. Unison is actually a pretty decent client, although nowhere near as feature rich as any of the good Windows alternatives.
12/17/2008 2:42:34 AM
12/17/2008 2:51:36 AM
I never use supersearch. http://www.newzbin.com is so much better imo.The only time I would use supersearch, is when newsleecher automatically searched for my missing files and queued them up.
12/17/2008 7:07:45 AM
^ newzbin is now accepting new members again... probably to pay for their newly created legal fee's
12/17/2008 9:49:54 AM
I just signed up for a free account with Newzbin. My lord, that is one intimidating website. It's so...busy. I think I'll stick with Supersearch.
12/17/2008 1:22:01 PM
It's busy until you configure v3 for lite mode. I'll upload some screenshots in a second.Basically, I like it because I search and it gives me everything I want to know about the release in a minimum area of space. I click one button and I download the nzb, the next bookmarks it, the third is the nfo, then a link and the fourth lets you hover over for a popup nfo and comments. Plus if there's anything that has not been indexed, I can always raw search usenet through them as well. I always try not spend any more money on them, but always end up topping up after i'm out of credit.http://www.elusivity.com/nb1.JPGhttp://www.elusivity.com/nb2.JPGobviously you can get much more information presented when you're not on a pos 1024*600 lcd.[Edited on December 17, 2008 at 2:32 PM. I'd like to try switching over to newzbin, anyone have an invite they could give me?
12/27/2008 8:20:25 PM
Oh wow, I guess I just got lucky because I just signed up 10 days ago and didn't need an invite, but it looks like now you do. I just checked to see if I had any invites, but I guess 10 days (and no money paid) doesn't get me any.
12/27/2008 9:00:57 PM
Yeah, and I meant to try it out a few weeks ago, just didn't get around to it until now.
12/27/2008 9:59:58 PM
bump, anyone have a newzbin invite?
1/27/2009 3:00:46 AM
who still needs newzbin invites ? PM me with an email address.let it be known that you still have to pay for credit to get any kind of utility out of the site.rslog looks to be the heat.[Edited on February 6, 2009 at 11:58 PM. Reason : .]

So supersearch has been acting up a bit lately. And worst of all there hasn't been any acknowledgment of the outages on the newsleecher homepage. The natives are starting to get restless on the support forums. Anyway, someone over there recommended binsearch.info as a decent alternative. It seems to work pretty well for a web based nzb creation tool. And it's free.]
2/11/2009 11:27:10 PM
just put up 10 dollars for a year of newzbin.com access. The only thing I see supersearch useful for is automatically grabbing missing pars or rars from my incomplete release.[Edited on February 11, 2009 at 11:30 PM. Reason : .]

2/11/2009 11:34:13 PM
newzbin has really bad content btw - so much dutch/NL crap and so many things that it's so hard to see a type for (i.e. DVD, Divx, etc.)i think it's a waste of money if anyone is debating buying itso is supersearchbinsearch, nzbindex, newzleech, etc. are all open, free alternativesand keeping up with tvbinz and gotnzb4u will give you most of the releases posted, and then you can use those other search tools to find randomly posted things as you need them
2/12/2009 12:34:44 AM
you can easily setup a filter so that you only get EN releases.
