Wal-Mart is where people go who are too ugly to be allowed into Target, like the woman wearing purple sweatpants and a tweetybird t-shirt with her enormous fat-lady boobs swinging around somewhere near her navel. Not much different from the people I've seen hanging around outside the Women's Hospital in Greensboro. It attracts people with absolutely zero taste, culture, class, or refinement, kind of like Myrtle Beach.

My wife is actually scared of Wal-Mart, she was clinging to my arm the whole time we were in there, afraid of getting kidnapped by the mexicans.

for starters let me say that im torn on Walmart. It brings jobs (both here and afar) and businesses and give people with tight budgets a good place to do their trading usually in rural areas that might have needed a shot in the economic arm.

That being said Wal-mart and most of its brands it carries have used "Free - Trade" agreements and the WTO to make setting up factories and sweatshops overseas more lucrative and less risky. This is our government teaming up with these major corporations to bypass tariffs and other obstacles that make overseas manufacturing risky. Smaller stores cant do this. As a result we see a mass of Manufacturing jobs leaving america and the small businesses that used to sell their stuff shutdown.

This process of course uses more oil and creates more pollution as compared to the buy local sale local mentallity. It has also made people more likely to buy cheap shit that is unrepairable. We just buy the same thing again because it is that cheap. That means more stuff gets thrown away in our landfills.

I think you can only blame Wal-mart so much though. They are there to make money and compete and thats what they do (and well). We should probably blame our government for being involved in the WTO and "free" trade agreements.

Think I've been to Walmart once in the last 10 years. I don't think there's even one relatively near me anyway. I feel dirty every time I go in one.

I deal with many distribution centers on a regular basis

a few institutions Wal Mart kicks the shit out of in terms of professionalism and service on a corporate level :

HEB
Walgreens
CVS - (which is tied with HEB for absolute worst)
Petsmart
Target

Dollar General is surprisingly very easy to work with, but I believe this to be because they are much smaller in comparison.

Just because an organization is professional doesn't mean they're a good organization.

A company can be as professional as can be. Doesn't have anything to do with the quality of their products, the quality of life of their workers, and their company as a whole. I vote with my money. I'd rather shop somewhere like Costco that is a far better company than Walmart.

I don't doubt they're creating jobs, giving opportunities to people who wouldn't have them otherwise, restoring small towns, bleh bleh, but that doesn't mean they're doing a good job of it. They could be providing BETTER opportunities, paying a higher working wage, etc.

This is kind of old but still interesting (seems somewhat legit):

Interesting relationship between food stamps and buying power.

I have seen more shopping cart violations at Walmart than anywhere else. Even when there is a cart corral two parkings spots away. It's all over the place.

Walmart has its drawbacks, but in a lot of cases it is the most practical place to get things you need. Dollar General is doing very well because they have reasonably priced basic items and are much more convenient/faster to get in and out of than walmart. Target has less selection and higher prices but appeals more to urban women.

Let me guess you live in the country and Walmart is the only thing close by? There's 3-4 Targets close to me and there's not a single Walmart anywhere near me. Not only do I not want to support Walmart but it's not convenient to get to.

If there were a law that shut down all Wal-Marts tomorrow, it wouldn't be urban liberals that felt the impact, it would be the poor people that shop and work there. It's easy to look down your nose at Wal-Mart shoppers when you're college educated and have a salary to show for it. The Real Poor don't go to Whole Foods. Retail is a race to the bottom in some markets, and Wal-Mart has won that race.

In a way, Wal-Mart is kind of like a symbiotic tumor that grew out of a subsidy-rich environment. It's ugly, but if you were to just remove it, there's a good chance the host would die. Without food stamps and government assistance, their workers wouldn't be able to survive and their key customer base wouldn't be able to load up their carts.

I am currently having to work part time at DG and everytime i have to tell someone they are going to have to go to walmart to get something they are not happy, even when they look like one of walmarts regulars.

I'm not sure if anyone genuinely enjoys shopping there

The one in Chapel Hill (just across the Chatham County line) is pretty nice and usually not swamped with horrible people. It's hella more convenient than fighting the traffic to get to Target at Southpoint or the Durham shopping options if you live in Carrboro.

The Wally World in Wake Forest and the one on Fox Rd near Triangle Town Center are straight. They are the only Wally Worlds that I have ever seen with self-checkout. All-in-all, unless you are using coupons elsewhere, nothing can beat Wally World overall.

It really is (in a way) since Amazon collects sales tax now. Amazon still wins it outs but only by a small margin these days. Whats even better is that most major retailers are willing to do a price match against Amazon, which I have taken advantage of several times.

I love Wal-Mart when the crowds are down and the self-checkout lady is attentive/expedient with her "ok" button

You're kind of missing the point. I'm not advocating shutting down all Wal-Marts. I see their value. They employ people and they provide cheap products for lower income families.

The reason I don't support Wal-Mart is because they COULD do a lot better. There are plenty of GOOD companies out there that do MORE for their workers. Not just the bare minimum. Costco as I've mentioned is one of them. Starbucks also provides healthcare to a large portion of their workers as well as this (small but a step in the right direction):

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/06/16/starbucks-free-college-tuition/10569971/

It's simply the fact that larger corporations CAN do better. Wal-Mart COULD raise their prices 1 or 2 cents with very little impact to the consumer and get the majority of their workers out of poverty.

If I didn't have a choice sure I'd shop there. Now that I'm educated and have a good salary I'm going to vote with my money and not shop there.

I do know that Wal Mart charges the FUCK out of their vendors who do not get their product in on or 3 days before the due date. Moreso than other companies. I think that wal mart makes a shitload of money off of this and it is one of the ways they are able to keep their products cheap.
