Shiny.

That article says Jay Leno bought it I think?

Figures!

My only question about this car is whether or not mid-life-crisis-guy (who lives down the street from my parents' house) is going to trade in his vette for one of these.

The LS9 has officially been rated at:

638 hp
604 lb-ft

!!!

Quote :
"The high word is finally out, the Corvette ZR1, powered by GM's new and most powerful engine ever, produces 638 hp. The hand-built 6.2 liter LS9 supercharged V8 engine was initially estimated at 620 hp, 100 hp per liter, but has exceeded expectations with 638 hp (476 kW) and 819 Nm of torque (604 lb.-ft.)"

And a video showing it reach 205 mph:

Quote :
"[UPDATE - 2:45pm EST] GM has sent us this excellent video which shows a top speed run at their banked oval test track in Papenburg Germany. While the ZR1 takes the high road, other vehicles testing simulataneously such as a semi trailer truck are taking the low road and seem to be stationary objects as the ZR1 rockets past. Although a little difficult to see in the video, look carefully at the digital speedometer mounted just below the air vents in the center console. Cruising at a steady 100 mph, the ZR1 shows you how quickly it can reach 205mph"

^^this thing is going to murder gtr's. looks like the 08 vipers will be history also.

if the ls9 is anything like all the other lsx engines, i bet they'll crank out somewhere around the 600 mark to the wheels if not more. gm has consistently underated their performance cars for the last decade. a pulley swap, tune, and exhaust and i'll bet some will be hitting a conservative 675-700. that's nuts for a $100k factory car.

that's not a fair comparison.

Z06 vs. GT-R
ZR1 vs. GT-R Spec V

Quote :
"The Nissan GT-R's 7:29 lap record won't stand for long if Chevrolet has anything to say about it. Speaking with InsideLine, Corvette Chief Engineer, Tadge Jeuchter, says that the ZR1, "will be able to take the production-car track record at any racetrack," and that although Chevy doesn't have a production version of the uber-Vette at the Nurburgring yet, they're expecting a lap time of "seven minutes, twenty-something seconds." That sounds like smack-talk to us. But while the ZR1 might have the potential to best the GT-R's 'Ring time, the 550-600 hp elephant in the room is the forthcoming GT-R V-Spec, which is already putting down (roughly-timed) laps around the North Loop in the 7:25 realm. Let the battle begin. We're making popcorn now."

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/02/corvette-zr1-engineer-says-gt-r-wont-be-king-of-the-ring-for-l/

The part I bolded is very bold of Chevrolet. Are they saying they can beat the F430 Scuderia, which is beating the Enzo's times at racetracks? Or [ALL] other similar cars?

straight line maybe and even that after past 120mph or so. gt-r will still run circles around it on the track.

it's bold, but you can bet that the chief engineer isn't making public statements like that without some pretty damn solid knowledge that it's the truth. like i mentioned above, if there's one thing gm meets or exceeds it's their advertised power and performance numbers.

^

1) The ZR1 hasn't lapped the Nurburgring yet, so no one can say for sure which will be faster.
2) The GT-R's time is not #1, but very close to it. Here are the top few:

#1 7:27.82 - Pagani Zonda F Clubsport
#2 7:28 - Porsche Carerra GT
#3 7:29 - Nissan GT-R
#4 7:32 - Porsche 911 GT2
#5 7:34 - Koenigsegg CCR
#6 7:38 - Mercedes-Benz SLR 722 GT
#7 7:40 - Porsche 911 Turbo
#7 7:40 - Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren
#7 7:40 - Bugatti Veyron 16/4
#10 7:42 - Porsche 911 GT3
#10 7:42 - Ford GT
#12 7:42.9 - Chevrolet Corvette C6 Z06
#12 7:43 - Lamborghini Murcielago

Considering that the Nissan's price is anywhere from 5% to 50% of the others (save for the GT3), it is quite remarkable in motoring history that it is near the top. And I bet that someone will pilot it in under the Zonda's/CGT's time in the near future. And yeah, the V-Spec will of course shatter the Zonda/CGT to pieces, again, at a fraction of the price.

Note: I am not including various superlights in that list. Otherwise, before the Zonda, you have:

6:55 - Radical SR8
7:12 - Radical SR3 Turbo
7:14 - Donkervoort D8 RS
7:18 - Donkervoort D8 RS

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordschleife_fastest_lap_times

So does Ferrari not like to take their cars to the Nurburgring?

^^if there's one thing you're always right about, it's being wrong.

going back the the gm engineer's bold statment, i would just like to also mention the fact that the previous zr1 was targeted at eliminating as many records as possible, and was largely successfull. this c6 zr1 might finally be the car to break the numerous speed/endurance records currently held by the c4 zr1. quite fitting i'd say, and also quite a testament to the level of heritage and history coming behind the c6 model. to have held off these records for 15, yes FIFTEEN years and now possibly break and reclaim them with a different model of the same car is baller.

GM's official stats just released:

0-60 mph in 3.4 sec
1/4 mile in 11.3 sec @ 131 mph
top out at 205 mph

But I know once people get a hold of it, they will break the first two numbers. The Z06 has been clocked at 3.4, so I am sure this will do like flat 3. And the Z06 does the 1/4 mile in 11.7, so perhaps this can do it in 11 flat.

Also released:

MSRP: 103,000
Gas guler tax: 1,700
Chrome wheels: 2,000
Only option package: 10,000

Mileage 14/20 city/hwy (3rd most fuel-efficient supercar on earth - 1st is Porsche GT3 @ 15/22, 2nd is Dodge Viper @ 12/22)

Also, a video:

^^^so what? You can take this engine and pound on it at the race track till the cows come home. Everybody (including you) would trade a flat powerband for some peaky high efficiency engine.

^Check out the Corvette forums. There are documented time slips for Z06s, stock, on stock (crappy) run flat tires, that will run high 10s. Its all driver. BigBlueRam will back me up on that.

^Yep, and if you want to see the limits of the force fed options on the Vette, go over to the Lingenfelter TT kits. I believe they have just opened the doors on the 1200hp TT. And the 1000hp TT option has been there for a while.

It ain't cheap, but it's doable. I'm just impressed GM can offer what it is offering with the reliability and warranty, two thumbs up!

VR4 was a 3.0L and made over 300HP 17 years ago

Nobody is claiming it's some kind of record HP/liter. The point is there's no production car at this power level stock that even comes close in terms of price and longevity. Although I'm assuming on longevity.. I think the LSx motors have proven that they're up for the challenge thus far and it's obviously covered under warranty.. Badass car no doubt

^^^^get your nose out of magazines and worldcarfans.com and into the real world. there has been a fully documented/verified run of 10.9x in a showroom stock c6 zo6, right down to the crappy runflat tires. privately owned vehicle, not a manufacturer "ringer" or anything. it happened at mir, which is one of if not the best track in the country in terms of prep and weather. there have been numerous documented sub 10.99 runs from other cars around the country with the only modification being drag radials.

needless to say, the new zr-1 will be deep into the 10's. more importantly, it should be a legitimate every day 10 second car. that means at almost any track, in varying weather conditions, etc. it's capable of a 10.99 or better.

it's not even close to being a straight line only performer. it's the total package. in case anyone has missed it, a gm engineer has emphatically stated that it will beat ANY production vehicle on ANY road course in the world. that's a hell of a statement to back up, but i don't think it would be made if they weren't pretty confident of it being true.

^certainly, i see no reason this next incarnation will be any different. the other past and current members of the ls family of engines will take some serious beatings and have only gotten better with each new model. the rest of the car might fall apart around it though.

what do you mean "until" it works? it's always worked. the corvette has been among the top performing sports cars since its introduction 55 years ago. especially the c4/c5/c6 have brought exceptional performance at a relative bargain. who else has done so much with a single model?

the only silliness is that gm has pwnt everyone else with simple "ancient" technology.

It's a shame only 1700 units will be made this year for the US. The other 300 will be exported. The production limiting factor is the supplier's ability to mass produce the carbon fiber roof and other cf components. Hopefully the prices will come down to MSRP levels by the end of the 2010 production run. The 2005 Ford GT had up to a $100,000 mark up and by the end of 2006/ beginning of 2007, prices were at MSRP.

AND IT'S DONE!

http://www.worldcarfans.com/9080627.013/corvette-zr1-laps-nurburgring-in-7-min-26

Corvette ZR1 Laps Nurburgring in 7 min 26.4 sec

Quote :
"According to Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter, the ZR1 has, just yesterday morning, lapped the Ring in a time of 7 minutes 26.4 seconds. The car was stock standard except for the communications and safety equipment. No elaboration on what exactly this safety equipment is, but standard issue would include a fire extinguisher, in case the fast ZR1 pulled an R8 V10. Tires were stock too, and so was fuel, which was normal pump juice and not racing liquid.

Development engineer Jim Mero drove the car’s rims off from a rolling start, but felt he could have gone even quicker around a few places. A strong headwind was felt rushing through the main straight as well."

Now imagine the numbers it can pull in the hands of a professional racer! 7 min 25 sec does not seem unlikely.

For comparison, here are the top 5 times again:

#1 7:27.82 - Pagani Zonda F Clubsport
#2 7:28 - Porsche Carerra GT
#3 7:29 - Nissan GT-R
#4 7:32 - Porsche 911 GT2
#5 7:34 - Koenigsegg CCR

And the superlights, which are not included under "production cars":

6:55 - Radical SR8
7:12 - Radical SR3 Turbo
7:15 - Donkervoort D8 270 RS

So now, the world record for production sedans (CTS-V in 7' 59", beating the latest M3 and M5/M6!) and production coupes on the Nurburgring are both held by American cars! That's a great achievement, I must say!
