Please be true. I want the old Wake Forest back when you can just glance at your schedule in the preseason and chop that up as a win.

Interesting article speculating on how the UM-Miles Michigan thing fell through.

Supposedly the Grobe to Arkansas deal has fallen through due to Grobe changing his mind. Arkansas is getting shat on more than us during our bball search.

Quote :
"FAYETTEVILLE - For the second time in three days, Arkansas has been spurned by the man picked to be the Razorbacks’ new football coach.

Media outlets throughout the country, including The Morning News, reported Wednesday night and in today’s newspapers that Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe would replace Houston Nutt. Today, Grobe decided to remain at Wake Forest.

On Monday night, the UA zeroed in on Clemson coach Tommy Bowden, but things fell apart and the board of the Razorback Foundation never voted on a salary supplement for Bowden. The negotiations with Grobe went further and the foundation board approved a salary supplement for him.

The foundation would not be asked to approve such a supplement unless the coach involved had agreed to the terms, according to a source.

Grobe went before his team last night and that the situation became very emotional, according to reports. He apparently told Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long today that he had changed his mind."

So Arkansas has now tried to get the coaches of *three* ACC programs and been spurned by all of them? So what's their next move? They obviously wouldn't get Beamer or Bowden Sr., but what about Groh? Friedgen? TOB?

I am seeing the similarities between their deal and our last basketball search though...

hey - you guessed right! congrats!

but don't go acting like it was a done deal before the Army Navy game. PJ made his decision today after two visits to GT, a bidding war between four schools that got up to $2.3 mil per year. GT had to break the bank - otherwise PJ would have gone elsewhere

1.7 annually.

Would be funny if they have another average year next year. Of course, I guess anything above 500 is great for Rutgers, right?

Right now, yeah... but that part of the country will expect more and more every year and won't accept any less. Schiano built it but if he doesn't continue to improve it he'll be gone..

it was a done deal all along...it was just about finding the right number. he never considered smu (that's exactly what he said), but he wanted to go from the $1.2 mil per year at navy to over $2 mil per year.

i talked to my boss about an hour ago and he told me some pretty interesting things.

1. lee fowler never returned any of paul johnson's calls when we were searching for a coach. johnson wanted to come here, but fowler wasn't interested or didn't make an effort to show interest.

2. fowler won't be here long term ("as sure as this table is in front of me" were the exact words).

3. o'brien has six years left in his contract at ncsu, paul johnson signed a six year deal with georgia tech. he said "i'm telling you now, that is no coincidence, and lee fowler won't be here then."

4. there is a letter circulating that is an open criticism of fowler and how he handled the football coaching search that was sent to fowler, oblinger, and wendell murphy. i'm trying my best to get my hands on that letter and i will post it if i'm successful.

5. paul johnson is not happy with lee fowler and how he treated him and said "you better believe i'm putting it on nc state next season." he said this the same day i posted that he was going to georgia tech.

again, if you guys don't believe me, that's completely fine...i'm just relaying it because it's kind of fun to hear some of the things that are being said between the state bigwigs, coaches, and the like.

i really want steve logan to accept the duke job...the acc could be on the rise.

^^that's a good point. i didn't even know that. they don't play in the regular season until 2010. i'm guessing it was a temperamental statement anyway since he was spurned by fowler. i am excited about seeing johnson in the acc and how well he does.

This is a good deal for PJ. I am actually interested to see

1) If the Flexbone will work at a BCS level
2) If it doesn't, will he change his offense.

he won't change his offense. my boss is very close to paul johnson and their views are identical that you have to run an offense similar to johnson's. i mean he was basically a "consultant" for meyer before he went to florida and it's filtered through to wake forest, west virginia, missouri, etc...he's made a darn big footprint.

Uh, no offense or anything, but Paul Johnson can go fuck himself if all of that's true. He didn't have some divine right to be considered for the job.

"Michigan contacted LSU coach Les Miles last week
LSU coach has phone discussion with university's president, athletic director

December 11, 2007

BY MARK SNYDER

FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

Louisiana State coach Les Miles appears to be a Michigan coaching candidate again.

Miles had a phone conversation Friday morning with Michigan athletic director Bill Martin and school president Mary Sue Coleman, according to several people with knowledge of the call.

Michigan received permission Nov. 28 from LSU athletic director Skip Bertman to speak with Miles, as long as it was after the Dec. 1 SEC championship game. So asking LSU again for permission was not an issue; U-M is believed to have initiated Friday's call.

Bertman said Monday night he didn't know if Miles had had contact with Michigan. But he said he doubted anyone could sway Miles to leave LSU.

"He and Bo Schembechler were real close," Bertman said. "If Bo Schembechler were alive, I doubt he could have got him to go to Michigan. It's hard for people who don't live in the South to understand."

Miles played and coached under Schembechler at Michigan.

While the call between the two sides did not identify Miles as the leading candidate for the coaching vacancy, it did give them a chance to interact formally for the first time and to discuss a number of issues previously handled through intermediaries.

"We're not going to be discussing anything about recruiting (a new coach) until after the announcement is made," Coleman's spokesperson, Kelly Cunningham, said Monday.

Martin's representative, associate athletic director Bruce Madej, said U-M is not commenting on the search.

Miles' agent, George Bass also said he had no comment.

As the Free Press reported Dec. 1, discussions had occurred between Miles' side and Michigan representatives in the days leading up to the SEC championship game, enough to identify him as Michigan's leading candidate.

But Martin was unavailable when Bass, among others, tried to contact him that day. Miles eventually held two news conferences at the Georgia Dome -- one before the game, and one after winning it -- implying he would stay at LSU.

While Miles did sign an LSU contract extension late last week, adding a year to his deal, his yearly salary -- around $2.6 million if he loses the BCS national championship game and close to $3.4 million if he wins it -- remains unchanged. The $1.25-million buyout to leave for Michigan reportedly is still in place.

Bertman said Miles' amended contract includes free tuition for his children at LSU, academic incentives based on his players' achievements and a severe penalty -- paying off double the remaining years left -- if Miles is fired.

"Les made a decision he wanted to stay. He loves Michigan, but the truth is, for Les Miles at this time, this is probably a better place," Bertman said.

Yet those close to Miles insist he has always held Michigan as his dream job and there's no reason to believe that has changed, especially in light of Miles' recent national radio interviews, continually pointing out his love for U-M.

"He loves Michigan; he would never say anything bad about Michigan," Bertman said.

The reason for Michigan's reconnection with Miles is uncertain but, coming the same day that Rutgers coach Greg Schiano officially withdrew from consideration, the timing shows that Michigan is exploring all possible avenues.

A significant number of former players also made it known -- via e-mail, letters and phone calls to Martin, Coleman and the Board of Regents following the SEC title game -- that they wanted Miles hired.

Hiring Miles would be a bit more challenging for Michigan now, though. The morning of Dec. 1, the chances of Miles' LSU team playing for the national championship were distant. LSU had to win the SEC title game that afternoon and two teams ahead of the Tigers -- West Virginia and Missouri -- had to lose that night.

All three occurred.

Now, if Michigan is to hire Miles, it probably could not do so until after the Jan. 7 BCS title game, when LSU faces No. 1 Ohio State in New Orleans.

The two sides -- Miles and U-M -- are expected to speak again.

The known candidates for the coaching position, other than Miles, are Michigan's coordinators, Mike DeBord and Ron English. English is also reportedly a candidate at Arkansas.

it still makes sense

Miles signed the contract for more than what his buyout would be, so he would still technically not have to pay LSU anything to leave..he has that clause in there somehow worked out.

He's sneaky, I am telling you...I wouldnt even doubt if he still had not signed.

It is always fun to hear what bigwigs and the heavy-packing alumni. You sit and wonder if it's true or not and let it take you on a tangent.

I've always thought it'd be a nice idea to pay off a cleaning lady to put some bugs in the AD office and in the suites at Carter-Finley, to just here the frustration or joy in the alumni and how that transfers over to Fowler, especially when it comes to finding a new coach or firing the one you got.
