"i'm perplexed at how these could be mentioned in the same breath."

Ah right, thought they were all released the same year and therefore under appreciated because people had kind of had their fill of realistically violent war movies after Saving Private Ryan. Turns out that was only what kind of screwed The Thin Red Line

Anyways, The Thin Red Line is obviously a better movie and more artfully done- but Enemy at the Gates is a still a very good film that few people have actually seen.

"Malcolm X didn't get press? You're joking right?"

It got press, but a lot of it focused on the controversy and the nation of islam's reaction. Keep in mind that most of the movies people have mentioned in this thread so far were critically well received but almost nobody bothered to see them. Malcom X is one of those films, barely grossed over 40 million- ranking it 32nd in gross revenue for films released that year.

It did receive two nominations for Acadamy awards, but was beaten out by Scent of a Woman and Dracula respectively. While I'd argue that al pacino (who beat denzel washington out for best actor) might be a better actor in general, Denzel Washington's portrayal of Malcom was much more powerful and significant. Anyways, I consider a movie like this what was 32nd in box office gross for the year to be underrated for sure.

"I second Menace II Society, don't know if it is actually underrated, but a great movie nonetheless"

Yeah maybe I'm bending the idea of "underrated" since this one was also critically well received (of course so was Children of Men) but this one did even worse than Malcom X at the box office. It was ranked 57th for the year in terms of gross revenue. Of course, this was the year Shindler's List, Philidelphia, and The Fugitive were released so maybe people had their fill of really great movies that, with the exception of The Fugitive, were somewhat heart-wrenching. Still, it deserved to be seen by more people than "The Firm" which grossed around 6 times as much.

Anyways, definitely movies that hardly enough people bothered seeing.
