comic:Volleyball’s head coach Charita Stubbs looks forward to her first season counting her ACC wins on two hands.responses:When I opened the Oct. 21 edition of the Technician and saw the caricature depicting me, I felt that I had been transported to another era — an era when it was acceptable to portray an African-American woman in a stereotypical and derogatory manner. All student-athletes on my team, regardless of their race, were offended by the drawing as well and I feel that is it my duty to speak out for them, as well as myself.I am an African American woman, a wife and mother with a BA in political science, an MA in education and I am just a dissertation shy of a Ph.D. I was considered enough of an accomplished professional in my field to be hired by a great institution like N.C. State. But all of those qualifications are diminished by the insensitivity shown by this cartoon depicting such obvious racial stereotypes.I know that NCSU is an institution that emphasizes diversity and respects the rights and feelings of others. The Technician did not represent the ideals of this University that I am so proud of when the editorial staff made the decision to print this cartoon. I feel that not only does the Technician staff need to apologize to me personally, but should also apologize to my team and all African-American women affiliated with the University for portraying me in this manner.Charita J. StubbsN.C. State Head Volleyball CoachI am very disappointed and offended at the cartoon that was published in the Technician this week.First of all, I can’t believe in this day and age this type of stereotyping is allowed on a campus of higher education. Either the editor is not doing his or her job properly in letting this go to print or they agree with it and had a good laugh about it. Either way I find it highly offensive and expect a public apology sooner rather than later.Second, you would think that after getting a qualified staff that has brought success to the volleyball program, that has been dormant for so many years that each success would be celebrated instead of being made into a joke. This is not the first time one of your writers have felt the need to bring down the program with a headline or article this year. This is the first time that I strongly believe that the paper has gone too far in its portrayal of Head Coach Rita Stubbs. Again I expect a front page worthy apology from all parties involved with this malicious attack.Keisha J. Dempsassistant volleyball coach/recruiting coordinator]

Wait, what? Is this for real? I just see a cartoon poking fun at our program being terrible in conference play for so long. I do appreciate what Coach Stubbs has done in elevating the volleyball program, and I think she is the right person for the job.
10/24/2008 11:31:37 AM
Wait, what?Where are the racial stereotypes in that caricature? Did she think her lips were too big? Her hair too nappy? What am I missing there?[Edited on October 24, 2008 at 11:35 AM. Reason : 2]
10/24/2008 11:33:41 AM
Well the person isn't exactly an artist anyways. Maybe I'm just looking at it in the wrong perspective?
10/24/2008 11:36:16 AM
your guess is as good as mine, but w/e it is they want a frong page apology for it.
10/24/2008 11:36:24 AM
10/24/2008 11:39:14 AM
doesn't look much worse than this
10/24/2008 11:39:55 AM
Hey Charita, stfu and gtfo
10/24/2008 11:43:05 AM
seriouslyshouldn't she worry about coaching up her shitty ass volleyball team instead of of a hack job for a cartoon?
10/24/2008 5:42:55 PM
Aaah, a cunning use. Any way we can bring a Dissin'chant to a game and maybe get that thing off the board?[Edited on October 24, 2008 at 6:48 PM. Reason : ]

i could see how that drawing would be offensive
10/24/2008 7:04:24 PM
Seriously how in the world is that cartoon racist?????WTF? Did she seriously call that out? It is showing how much her team has improved since she took over.
10/25/2008 2:37:15 AM
"So dat what dee other hand be for" would've been "stereotypical and derogatory".
10/25/2008 9:13:15 AM
what a fucking crybabyit amazes me what a huge gaping vagina charita stubbs is. i wonder what could have been drawn that she wouldn't have taken offense to. what a fookin bitch.the technician should post headline: "We're Sorry Coach Stubbs"then the first line of the article should state: "Sorry we ever hired you."
10/25/2008 12:29:57 PM
^ careful. She's gonna demand a front-page apology from TWW with those kind of racially insensitive remarks. Are you implying that African American women have unusually large vaginas? And that they are overly emotional? HOW DARE YOU? She's just a dissertation shy of her PhD yO! [Edited on October 25, 2008 at 1:53 PM. Reason : 2]

On one hand I can see the cartoon being racist because it does portray her as a stupid black person. The problem is in a caricature its hard to draw black people without them looking kind of stupid. I mean if you draw a caricature of Chuck Amato or Herb Sendek it would be considered a funny cartoon version of them. However when you include features in cartoons to make people look black it makes them look stupid. You are best off not drawing black people in cartoons. She is obviously mad that they are making fun of the volleyball team for always sucking and since there is no defense to that (they do suck) its easier for her to attack the cartoon as being racist. The technician should just ignore the apology request. They already published her response which is enough. They already have freedom, affirmative action, welfare, etc. You have to draw the line somewhere. Give an inch take a mile.
10/25/2008 2:49:17 PM
in other news the volleyball team is boycotting giving interviews or some inanity in protest of the cartoonHonestly, the day I saw the cartoon in the paper I didn't for one second think anything racial at all, the only thing I saw in it was the fact that our volleyball team is that terrible, for us to have had records that bad for so long. Caricatures are caricatures, and generally make a person look silly, regardless of race, gender, etc. My respect of Mrs. Stubbs, however, is infinitely lower after seeing her reactionary and inflamed response to said cartoon. Honestly, throwing the race card over something so trivial just looks like a weak deflection on the real issue, which is a struggling volleyball team and a record in the depths of mediocrity. I agree that it would be ridiculous and a sham for The Technician to issue an apology, and I for one hope they do not, because that would be pandering to a level of 'feel-good' politically correct garbage that is slowly sucking the life out of this country.

12/3/2008 11:45:52 AM
The cartoon isn't racist, that's an idiotic thing to get offended at.Being offended because the artist that drew her has a particularly bad case of Downs Syndrome? Reasonable. That picture is total shit, even for a caricature, and I for one would never let someone that bad at art publish an image of me.But it's not racist.

As if any of you fucks go watch NCSU volleyball. You dont so SHUT THE FUCK up! How about some of you get out on the recruiting trail and do better. Its not like we've EVER been a VB powerhouse, and if you look at our ACC record from last year to this year it has improved. I love how people who dont know Shit about athletics try to act as if they know how to run a College Athletic Office!
