I just ordered a gaming laptop. DISPLAY: MSI GT80 Titan, 18.4" FHD, Anti-Glare 1920x1080 - 1st Mechanical Backlit Keyboard on NotebookCPU: Intel® Core™ i7-4720HQ Mobile Processor (4x 2.6GHz/6MB L3 Cache) [GT80]RAM: 8GB [8GB x 1] 1600MHz DDR3 SO-DIMM Laptop Memory - Corsair or Major BrandGPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M 8GB GDDR5 [GT80 4720HQ]Thinking about upgrading to SLI GTX 980M if there is an intense game I want to play. Apparently the games I wanted to play aren't graphic intensive anymore (Starcraft 2, Age of Empires(lol)). For a laptop this is easy to upgrade, but I'm thinking anything above 980M SLI is pushing into 4k and its limited by the 1080 screen.

I just bought one off a coworker he'd built for $900. I think it was a sweet deal:Windows 8.1Intel i7 4700 @ 3.5 GhzGeForce 760 SLI2 128 GB Hard drives in RAID 0700 GB Hard drive for storage32 GB RAMBought the new ASUS Predator 27" G-Sync Monitor since I spent way less than I intended.First Windows machine since 2007, and first gaming machine in 15 years. Being around professional gamers at work has given me the bug again. [Edited on May 8, 2015 at 11:16 AM. Reason : a]

Still using my trusty old i7 920 Recently upgraded my video card to a gtx 970 and put a ssd in, runs gta 5 maxed out at 60fps msaa and all options on Never seen a game that looks this good ...new card makes the oculus run buttery smooth as well
5/9/2015 12:25:48 AM
There are far better looking games than GTA5. Much older ones too. With that being said they did do a decent job optimizing it for PC. I get a pretty consistent 60-90 fps at 1080p with my 980 gtx. I've been thinking of going 144hz/2560 by 1440 but I'd need a second 980.
5/9/2015 12:53:01 AM
Forgot to mention the two 128gb raid is an ssd. I have so far just been playing CS:GO and I seem to run that at max with no frame rate issues. I will probably get another video card eventually--the 760 was just part of the package.
5/9/2015 2:48:48 PM
Nice! Yeah you shouldn't hit any vram issues with CS:GO.
5/9/2015 3:03:37 PM
When I was looking to build my own I saw the 900 series cards and the Titan cards. I was told to get a 980 and not the Titan. Didn't look into it enough to figure out what to do for the newer games.
5/9/2015 6:50:25 PM
Yeah the 980 is a solid card. It's got 4GB of vram and with a decent CPU (I'm running an older i5 950 but at 4.0ghz) you'll be able to max out most if not all newer games at 1080p and get a pretty consistent 60fps. If you're gaming higher than 1080p and/or want higher than 60hz you're going to need a little more power though.
5/9/2015 7:09:15 PM
i7 950*. And yeah the Titan X is almost $1100. You'd be better getting two 970's or 980s.
5/10/2015 12:35:53 PM
This was the monitor I got:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009742&cm_re=xb270hu-_-24-009-742-_-ProductI'll be needing two 980s if I want to play modern games?! Sounds awesome.
5/10/2015 12:58:29 PM
If you want to play newer games "maxed out" at 2560 by 1440 and 144hz then yes you'll need two 980's. My single 980 barely maintains 60 fps on newer games with generally the highest settings (some settings are just resource hogs like grass in GTA5 - so I turned it one notch down).
5/10/2015 4:41:31 PM
what are some other new gen games with graphics comparable to gta5? granted I havent played a huge variety of new games..but the graphics in gta, lighting and reflections are just beyond anything I've seen before.. draw distance is ridiculous. Maybe its just because there arent other games that show a modern environment that makes it stand out to me..I've always played mainly racing games and sims..what are other recent awesome games I should look into?

My coworker loves the shit out of Skylines.

I think Witcher 3 will be a big benchmark game for PCs, coming out next Tuesday.
5/11/2015 11:55:51 AM
Supposedly a 780 Ti could not max the game out and run at 60 FPS. I doubt that game will be more enjoyable than GTA V though, but I'll definitely check it out (through a torrent). Some taxing games that are out now:Project CarsDying LightMetro:LLStar CitizenIL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover/Battle of Stalingrad[Edited on May 11, 2015 at 12:56 PM. ^Yeah all those plus many others. Even Crysis 3 looks better than GTA5. Far Cry 3, Metro 2033, etc. GTA5 still looks like a port. Sure it's got great draw distance, textures, shaders, etc but it still does hold up against many other games out today.
5/11/2015 1:06:44 PM
GTA V looks nothing like any of the console versions and when you use this mod it looks better than 95% of the games out there without even taking into account the scale of the game.https://youtu.be/vZ0OFPjinXw
5/11/2015 2:06:04 PM
Oh yeah don't get me wrong it looks way better than the console versions but I still think there's quite a few PC games that look better than it (your 5% I guess).
5/11/2015 2:13:48 PM
i have to disagree re: gta v. Its one of the few games that doesnt seem like a port to me...its light years ahead of the console versions. the console versions only rendered at 1366 max resolution, just running it at 1080 at a solid 60fps is a huge differencei went to a friends and they were playing gta on the ps4 and i couldn't even play the game with the insane delay between button press and player reaction..and the colors were so washed out with such heavy fog it was impossible to see anything.have you played gta on a pc yet? i realize it isn't exactly the game for hardcore gamers..but its an incredible example of what current generation games are capable of.AND when modded you can't even compare gta on pc to a console...the graphics and everything else are modified and improved. i recently updated the handling lines for every vehicle using a new mod that was released the other day. GTA is fully cracked and its going to get crazy in the next few months when the mods start really getting insane.downloaded project cars yesterdaybig let down...i have been waiting for this to come out for over a year and its pretty crappy in my opinionthe car selection is weak and the physics still need a lot of work. drift physics in particular are pretty poorgraphics are great and sound is great though..[Edited on May 12, 2015 at 8:40 AM. Yes I've played for about 25-30 hours so far. I agree the game looks great. I haven't messed with any mods yet but I'm running it maxed out at 60-90 FPS and it looks great. I agree playing it on consoles is a whole different (poorer) experience. All I'm saying is there are games out there that look quite a bit better. Vanilla I'm more impressed by the textures, lighting, and DOF in games like Metro 2033, Crysis 3, or Far Cry 3.I mean the comparison is pretty easy (vanilla): Compared to like Crysis 3: Obviously I'm not being fair in the screenshots here but I still think there are far better looking games (again I need to mess with some mods).[Edited on May 12, 2015 at 9:11 AM. Agreed. GTA V had a huge draw distance which is impressive but isn't really a benchmark graphics game now. Even watching 4k GTA V on youtube it doesn't really impress me when compared to the new benchmark games like Crysis 3. Its hard to compare though, the vids for GTA V show city streets/urban environments and thats kinda "stale" compared to the moving trees/grass dynamic lighting and reflections in some Crysis 3 swamp.I got a free download for the Witcher III which is apparently taxing too.
