^^ I still haven't gotten to any CO resorts.. I went to Park City last year which was the best pure skiing I've had... but I prefer Tahoe b/c of the awesome views of the lake and the gambling...

^ I live in the Bay Area (thus me still being on TWW at work) so it's like a 3 hour drive... You can connect into Reno's airport... Sac is doable too..

Going up to the Catskills this weekend for New Years. 10 people in a cabin for 4 days, right by the slopes (which are like 90% open). Hells yeah!

^^ how good is the skiing in the Catskills? I know Whiteface near Lake Placid is usually OK but the Catskills seem really South and not very good hills..

^^The Catskills aren't that bad. I've only gone twice (both times to Hunter Mtn). I'd say its far and away better than anything in NC. I wouldn't say its better than Snowshoe, however the weather is better (i.e. more consistent) than what you'll get in Snowshoe. Forecast this weekend is low 30s during the day with snow showers, every day, and 20s or 10s at night.

that's a steal on those tickets. jump on it!

Skiied Mt Baker again yesterday...they had 220" of snowfall in December, including 130" in a 14 day period! Yesterday, thankfully, was partly sunny and not windy. My skills are progressing since the other day I skiied this season (first time since '03-'04 season)...I'm now thrashing the blues and floundering my way down the blacks (albeit without falling much at all). Hopefully I'll be able to get back to skiing the nasty stuff with real authority after a couple more days on the mountain.

I went to Loveland Pass, CO and boarded there today. The snow was soooooo soft to fall on but once I fell enough, I went to the bar, ordered a few drinks (baileys and chocolate milk YUM! and peppermintschops) After that I was money to get comfortable with going toeside (already got heel side down)

It was very smooth... and soooo easy to ride compared to NC slopes

Will be heading either to Winter Park or Cooper Thursday .. hurray!

The Catskills this past weekend were fantastic. We got 11 inches of snow Sunday night which made for fantastic conditions. All the Blacks and Double blacks were open, though there weren't any jumps set up in the terrain parks. Also no good moguls, but still a fun time.

I just found out that we have an extra day in SLC when my wife interviews for medical residency.

So I am going to get to ski out west this year

This is seriously the best thing that's happened to me in 2008.

Here are a few pics from Loveland Pass, CO One of the less popular resorts, but still very good for riding and its cheap ($45)

Tomorrow I am headed out to Winter Park and MJ and will def get some pics... I have a friend that works there that said he would hook me up ($35) but unfortunately he is headed to Raleigh to visit his parents

Ha ha the Avs and the HUrricanes play this weekend in Raleigh...

Ohh yeah I saw those deals for Spring break and will prolly head back out in March
My mom bought this coupon book and I can get lift tickets really cheap from that...

Mt Baker is like $36 w/ my military discount (low $40s without)! It actually makes some of the "best" lists in skiing mags, too.

Alta used to be $45...I don't know if they still are or not.

Planning on going down to Stevens' Pass this weekend.

Snowshoe is not Utah or Colorado, but on a day with good snow conditions, even a good skiier can have a really good time there. It's just a roll of the dice to try to plan a trip there in advance, and it can be very crowded at times.

and if you aren't a pretty good skiier, I wouldn't bother with making lots of extravagent arrangements to ski if you live in NC and don't have money to burn. Snowshoe is easily weekend-able.

for a good skier besides Widowmaker, Shay's Revenge, and Cup Run the other good stuff at Snowshoe are the terrain parks.

Though I heard they built some glades since last season so hopefully those are steep and challenging.

I've found that runs with moguls on the West coast are a lot easier on the knees. The moguls I TRIED (key word) to do at Showshoe would always KILL my legs... It was like skiing over rocks where as out here it's powder.

Squirt, I would really recommend sticking to Mary Jane when you go. Winter Park is extremely frustrating for snowboarders (in my opinion). Unless you really enjoy catwalks and walking your board half of the day. If you really want to try Winter Park though, just plan out your routes to the bottom and get a lot of speed through the flat parts.

skiied Stevens Pass, WA yesterday. Good bit of snow (around 100" base, i think)...I got buried in powder once when skiing off-trail and had to release my bindings and crawl out (which sucked). It was overcast and snowing lightly most of the day, though. A little crowded for my tastes, too (for a western mountain, especially). They do have night skiing until 10pm, though. Overall, not my favorite, but not bad. I'll prob ski there again sooner or later.

Oh, and my skills are returning a little more. I skiied mostly blues and a few blacks and didn't fall once all day until we went out for night skiing. At that point, we were out on a few blues that were mostly groomed, and with the crowds being pretty light at night, I was skiing at the speed of heat. I actually got talked to once by a patroller...told me I needed to slow it down (I ripped through a trail merge I didn't notice at warp speed, had a dude ski out in front of me, and yard-saled in my (successful) effort to avoid him. All in all, I fell maybe 4-5 times, but they were all in the last couple of hours when I was skiing like a wild man. I only lost my skis once.

So if you only get one day on the mountain out there, where's it gonna be? I think I'd hit Alta, partially because I didn't make it there on my trip to SLC. I think the Canyons are also underrated, or at least they were a few years ago when I skiied there.

Went up to Okemo this past Saturday. 117/117 trails open. They got about 2 1/2 feet of snow last weekend so coverage was good everywhere. It wasn't terribly cold so there were a lot of people out skiing. Luckily (as usual) there were next to no skiers in the glades, where I spent a fair amount of time. Coverage was pretty good in there, but still too much exposed rock/branches to dodge.

My dad called me up about going out west with my little bro in February, so now it looks like I'm making two trips to CO within a month of one another, lol. Time to hit the gym

Anyone have a suggestion on what would be the fastest way to get to Snowshoe. We're going up there for a few days next week, and google maps says it's +6 hours from Raleigh. Is going over to 77 really the best way?

^^I haven't done the drive from Raleigh in a few years but I believe the best way is something like this:

I-40 to Greensboro then hop on Hwy 220 N. Take that for a while, hop on I-64 for a litte bit, then onto Hwy 219, then Hwy 39 and then Hwy 66 I think. Just pull out an old fashion road atlas and figure it out. Also, once you get close to the WV border the roads are ridiculously curvy. If you have a sporting car its a fucking blast.

But no I don't recommend going up I-77.

Northeast should get a pretty solid dumping of snow over the next day or so. Definately needs it after most of the shit that fell before x-mas has melted. It's been 50 ish here in New York for the past 4 days.

Gonna hit up Stowe Mountain in a couple of weeks.
