^No that's weird.

Just a heads up, that performance update that Prospero posted on the first page (not SP1) dropped my 3dmark06 score from around 12000 to around 1000. I just uninstalled the update to confirm but for some reason it messes up my benchmark by 2000.

so i have a new dell sitting here with vista home premium loaded...and I have my copy of vista business from the ncsu msdn site.

should i try to clean up dell's copy of home premium (uninstall all of the extra crap etc), or should i just install vista business from scratch? i know i'll be losing the media center functionality by going business...but are there any other notable losses or gains from switching from home premium to business? i assume they're both 32bit OSs and can only see ~3.5GB of memory right?

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2068721,00.asp

looks like business has the "volume shadow copy" which looks like a way to restore individual files if you delete/overwrite them...although the word "volume" makes me think of imaging software...

^or you could download an OEM version of Vista Home Premium DVD and format with your Dell key (instead of using the Dell DVD)

i never did get that Apple commercial where the PC "Vista" was complementing the Apple "OS X" for it's TimeMachine feature, isn't it the same as VSC?

ooh thats a nice idea (if i want to retain the features of home premium instead of gaining the business features). time to hit up the torrent networks when i get home...unless you can think of a better source for a copy of the oem install media

For the most part they have the same capabilities. The difference is mostly in the interface and in how time machine is integrated into a lot of the apple programs. You can use it within iphoto to retrieve deleted photos for example.

Time machine is also a lot more user friendly. I'm not saying volume shadow copy is hard to use or anything, but it's not as straight-forward as time machine. It's also generally much quicker and simpler to restore whole folders, subfolders, playlists, etc. than it would be with shadow copy (multiple files can be tedious.) That being said, shadow copy does have one HUGE advantage over time machine. Shadow copy does not require a seperate partition or drive in order to do its stuff. You do however have to have one of the business, ultimate, enterprise, pro, server etc. versions of the windows os though. This doesn't sound like a big deal but every new mac comes with leopard and therefore time machine while most windows computers sold over the last couple years had XP or Vista home versions.

I do like shadow copy though.

is it generally microsoft's policy to only support the current and single previous version? in other words, are only XP and vista supported now?

don't.
You may remember Win 2k as "rock solid", but things change over time. Mostly, new computers and devices are introduced and they don't fully test or support Win 2k any more, so while Win 2k might have run perfectly on your system 5 years ago, it can actually run worse on newer hardware.

My company (a large, hi-tech company) forces all of us to run Windows 2000. When I asked why a year or two ago, I was told that some software in the accounting department only runs on 2k. What that has to do with what OS Engineers run, i don't know. But anyway, I got a Thinkpad T60 about 9 months ago, a nice machine out of the box from everything I read about it. Unfortunately, the first thing my IT dept did is wipe the XP SP2 installation clean and install Win 2k. The video drivers suck and the machine is unstable as hell now, basically. Blue Screens are not too uncommon, and several times a week I have to Ctrl-alt-delete to restart Explorer or just have to force restart to get back to a working desktop. If the T60 was running XP, I doubt I would have any problems with it.

Not to mention, if you go from Vista or XP (or Mac) to using Win 2k, you'll start to notice lots of missing features and niceties of the newer OSs, like the improved Windows Explorer and Start Menus, and you're stuck with IE6 only.

I'm thinking of upgrading to Vista 64 is there any drawbacks to this?

I have no really good reason, except I've heard 3D apps render a bit quicker.

^^^Dont. There are lots of drawbacks. Only install 64bit if you have specific application needs

.

^^Just an FYI, the reason drivers are so slow in coming for Vista is because Microsoft finally shut the doors on shitty driver development. To get a driver on Vista requires MUCH more rigorous standards, which for many hardware manufacturers means a complete rewrite of all of their drivers.

In the long run, its a smart move for Microsoft and the consumer. In the short run, it means a lot of people not buying new "made for vista" computers will continue to have aches and pains with crappy 3rd party drivers and hardware.

about vista memory utilization....

so i have a clean install of vista home premium, Q6600 proc, 3GB of memory (2GB of DDR800 and 1GB of DDR667). i have most visual options turned off, including aero.

when i boot into windows I only have 1-1.2GB of memory free (out of 3GB) when i go to processes, scvshost is using like 70MB, and everything else is 15MB or less. at first i'm wondering where all my memory is cause it not showing up in my task manager. then i find this: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000688.html

so are you guys fans of superfetch? do you leave it on? i'm not sure i'm a fan of only having 33% of my system memory free on boot up, though i guess its ok as long as superfetch gives up the ram when i need it for a game or something. maybe i'll plug in a big ol usb drive and see if that helps...

you aren't the only angry windows user i've seen. macs aren't "designed for a girl", and as a csc alum you should know that.

^^I've messed around with turning it on/off and vista seems faster with it on (programs load faster, etc).

I have 4 gigs of ram, and although it uses about 30% of that with nothing running i haven't run into issues where i don't have enough ram, and it seems to run faster with superfetch on, so its fine with me.

^, yeah from what i've noticed the ram usage seems to be a positive thing in all reality. i know number crunchers hate seeing their ram in use, but if it's there when you need it i don't see what the problem would be. this of course assumes that memory is allocated, when needed, correctly

from gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/337768/battlemodo-windows-vista-service-pack-1-rc1-):

vista is supposedly more than 15% faster than XP, but hell if those network and disk read/writing speeds don't make me cringe

yeah that's actually the only issue I have with Vista. You can feel the slower read/write in everyday use. It's annoying as hell when you have to watch the file transfer dialog for a full minute to clear on tiny item out of the recycle bin.

I don't think they're developing the next release on MinWin. I read MinWin was just a barebones demo to show how small they could possibly get the kernal or somesuch, and won't appear in any release.

^^ pidgin - http://www.pidgin.im/

okay, since no one answered my other thread...is 4gb RAM sufficient to disable the page file in vista? with those HD read/write times, i can't possibly imagine the page file doing much good if i've got 4gb, but i don't know for sure

i just bought a Gateway laptop for $350 a couple of weeks ago. T2330 processor (1.6 GHz dual core Intel), 2 GB RAM, integrated graphics, and I have no problems with Vista. Easily more stable than XP was on my old computer.

^^ Yeah pidgin is a great simple im client too. Check out that link from toms hardware i posted. It's really long, but it addresses the page file, and explains how to disable/adjust everything in vista to take advantage of more ram. I really want 8 gigs now because ram has gotten so cheap.

^lol "your vista"?

Yeah i haven't used the actual aim client in a while. I just remembered the hassle of the interface/aim ads etc. I want a simple aim client with a highly custamizable gui so i can eliminate everything except what i need.

Trillian has so many gui options and you can select a "minimilistic" display to only display exactly what you want. Not to mention all the windows have a transparency setting from 0-100% so teachers can't tell i'm on aim in class. Heh. The wikipedia option is sweet too. If you turn it on it underlines all the words that have a wiki article. So if someone types something you need to look up, you just hover your mouse over the word and it brings up a brief description of that word and a link to the wiki article.
