a part of what my company does is gps tracking on iphones and you'll be pretty disappointed if you want to use one for geocaching
3/30/2010 4:19:28 PM
boooowell, this may give me the excuse to buy something else
3/30/2010 4:41:08 PM
^^ But a $10 app isn't too much of an investment to get started, particularly if you are doing it in urban environments with clues. I imagine it would be much more difficult if it involved finding a tree stump in the middle of a forest, where you really need exact coordinates.
3/30/2010 4:59:47 PM
I did this once with a co-worker during lunch. It was kinda fun I guess, but also pretty nerdy.
3/31/2010 2:26:25 PM
^They can be very nerdy. I prefer to do ones more in the woods where you can really use the GPS and have a lot more challenge. A lot of urban ones barely require the GPS, just a good knowledge of the area. The map will show you pretty close to where you need to look.

Went for my first geocaching trip today! Went over to gulligans island and found it within 5-10 minutes. We forgot a pen and I was so pissed. I did log it on the geocaching.com though. My brother and I almost stepped on this huge snake, so Matthew killed it. He haaattteeesss snakes. It was a lot of fun for everybody even tho my brother thought it sounded lame at first. This was a little adventure and makes the p&g ones not as appealing. Definitely going to do it again. I have some pics that I put on facebook and will post here later. Oh! The iPhone app was actually more accurate than my brother's garmin Colorado 400c.
4/2/2010 10:26:10 PM
^In brush it very well may be more accurate. It doesn't need to have line of sight to the cell towers that triangulate its location, whereas the GPS unit must have uninterrupted line of sight to the satellites in orbit. So if it is degraded to the point of only getting 1 or 2 sats, whereas your iPhone is picking up 3 towers, its easy to think that the GPS will not be as accurate.

YO SON, who has a GPS unit and wants to go geocaching son? I have no personal GPS son but I will wander around with somebody who does.
4/3/2010 11:20:24 AM
Just went to town and hit 3 caches while I was out. Has been months since I did them, but the easy ones still took me no time to find.

4/5/2010 9:47:53 AM

4/5/2010 9:51:34 AM
Yeah, I figured you weren't around here simply because that terrain doesn't look like the terrain in this area. ]
4/5/2010 9:55:07 AM

4/5/2010 9:56:29 AM
Ah, gotcha. I guess I still figured correctly though!
4/5/2010 10:01:03 AM
We rustled up a snake this weekend too. This one was in my aunts laundry room on Easter Sunday. Little black snake. We caught him and dumped him out across the road.
4/5/2010 10:14:53 AM
i'm going to this one this weekend http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=5594244d-a7df-49cb-8bff-9853f8bd395aFumbler is a service forester, and has had to dress up as smokey bear before, so i think it'll be awesome. he scrounged up all kinds of smokey swag from his office that we're gonna trade. the cache container is a 5 gallon bucket! You shoulda put that snake in the cache. It would have made for an awesome next post on the geocaching website.
4/9/2010 11:34:47 AM
he would have been nice and rotten by now. my brother did curl up the snake and put him right in front of the cache at that first one. someone went and found it the next day and posted "thank you to the snake wrangler" on the website. haha

we went to "Smokey Bear's Cache" in medoc today. link to FB pics (includes pics of cache) http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2382999&id=11805098&l=913f3b0fdcthis one was awesome. chris is fairly certain he knows who put this out there (one of his coworkers), and is going to ask him on monday. the guy has 24 smokey bear themed caches all over the place.
4/10/2010 10:44:10 PM
I rode by Medoc Mountain twice yesterday, and if I had more time, I was going to stop and do that cache too after seeing you talk about it. Now that my brother is moved, I will be going by there more, so perhaps next trip I will have time to do it.

I would recommend it.
5/4/2011 2:12:25 PM
OH WE BACK!!!
8/16/2015 12:39:42 AM
i like to go out in nature, kill animals that offend me, bury trash around, and brag about stuff on the internetz. sounds like geocaching is for me!
8/17/2015 10:56:41 AM
Always thought this would take off more than it did. Is it still even a thing?
5/20/2020 5:53:39 PM
Definitely still a thing. Not sure it ever had hope to hit mass appeal but our kids love ‘treasure hunting’ when we do it. We open the app mostly whenever we are in a new random place.
5/21/2020 12:06:27 AM
I got the geocaching app that has the ®? trademark next to it. One thats .2 miles from my apt that several have found. Might try it tomorrow. This is description:
5/21/2020 3:51:02 AM
what app seems to be the most popular?
5/23/2020 4:54:15 PM
I got “geocaching“I found that one i posted. Gps on phone sucks though. I was like 10 ft plus or minus 15 feet. Felt stupid looking but was excited when I found it. I didn’t have a pen or I would have signed log. It was a prescription bottle wrapped in camo tape. Had a scroll of paper inside
5/23/2020 9:44:59 PM
I just found out that the common term in the geocaching community for non-geocachers is muggle. JFC that's dumb. I hate you.
