do allthe software bought from the bookstore come in retail boxes or OEM like boxes?
10/24/2007 4:37:49 PM
i don't know about the Bookstore in particular, but Apple generally doesn't sell anything OEM-style. You can pretty much be sure everything you get from Apple, no matter where you get it, is packaged.
10/24/2007 4:48:55 PM
so i wonder if leopard will be as fast a Tiger. Tiger runs so smooth and so quickly on my Mac. I'll be so disappointed if Leopard is not the same.
10/24/2007 5:24:32 PM
hmm, Gruber says that there is no actual license checking (i.e. "calling home" or "activation") built into OS 10.0-10.4. http://daringfireball.net/2007/10/familymaybe that means the 5-pack licenses are not really cut off at any time. I guess you buy them just to be a good citizen
10/24/2007 5:27:51 PM
^^ what Mac do you have?I think i've read that Leopard is the first version of OS X that will not run as quickly as its predecessor on identical hardware. But I think that's a moot point if your computer is fast enough to begin with. i.e. that will only affect you if you're installing it on a relatively old Mac
10/24/2007 5:29:16 PM
^^^Leopard is supposed to be the fastest OS yet...afaik^^^^^The last couple times they sold the Mac OS Discs they just came in a padded envelope. No frills. Pretty much all the rest of the Apple software they sell there comes in the retail boxes. Not that it really matters anyways, right?[Edited on October 24, 2007 at 5:39 PM. Reason : .]

from what I have seen so far, Leopard is supposedly fasterthat's what i'm hoping for at least

10/24/2007 8:01:50 PM
^^^^ Oh noez!! that sucks. I really hope that is not the case. I cant wait for the reviews. If this is the case, I'm skipping Leopard completely.I have a Black Macbook Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz w/ 2 gig RAM and 7200RPM HD
10/24/2007 8:09:41 PM
^Um, you'll be fine.

^^^ The question of speed comes into play for people like me.G4 800MHz Quicksilver model (Dual!!) from about 6 years ago.I'm still debating if I'm going to upgrade.Anything Intel is no problem. Especially anything Intel and 2GHz.I believe 10.2 was the last OS upgrade I got in a padded envelope, and it was strictly an upgrade version. (I took my proofs of purchase from 10.1 into Circuit City or Best Buy and asked if they had 10.2 upgrades. They said they needed a receipt from my 10.1 purchase, and I was like wtf no that was a year ago here's my proof o' purchase and they were like gtfo. So I went down to TenPlus or whatever down near the dollar theater and they were more than happy to give me a copy without even needing to see PoP. Seemed like really great guys there. Or maybe it was a 10.0 to 10.1 upgrade that was free because 10.0 kinda sucked...)But now all versions are the full versions in the bigass boxes that are pretty much standalone versions that don't require any specific previous version to be installed first. Just an OS in a box.[Edited on October 24, 2007 at 9:21 PM. Reason : ]

^ Apple got all environmentally conscious*. The boxes are now barely larger than the CD (and only because they're a rectangular prism.)*and of course by that I mean they realized less paper=less to produce+less shipping.

I got off work early today so i've been hanging out at the apple store at southpark mall in charlotte the last two hours. Gonna get me a leopard tshirt :p[Edited on October 26, 2007 at 5:31 PM. Reason : new macbook in a few weeks]

Picked it up yesterday from Southpoint. I have never personally witnessed such a crazy day just for an OS. The apple store was packed and loud as hell. But I guess thats all thanks to Apples talented marketing team...they are definitely earning their pay checks.Haven't had much time to play around with it yet but so far I'm loving it...all of you that pre-ordered..have you received your copies yet and had a Chance to play around with it yet?[Edited on October 27, 2007 at 9:43 AM. got my copy, haven't installed it yet. gave it to one of my coworkers that went in on it for the weekend. if anyone gets it installed on a powerbook, let me know how it runs. Hopefully it will be like panther->tiger and actually be faster after the upgrade, but maybe that's wishful thinking this time around.

i'm holding off on doing anything til i know that adobe isn't gonna start going apeshitcs3 is like the only thing i use
10/27/2007 11:05:06 AM
I use CS3 all the time and have had no issues...granted i've only used it on Leopard for a few hours

Question: Besides being illegal. If I put the same single license DVD in both my iMac and my macbook pro..will it work without deactivating the first install? The reason I ask is because I have my free upgrade coming in the mail since I bought the iMac after Oct. 1st but I didn't want to wait for it to get here to upgrade my macbook pro. So legally I have two licenses I just don't have the 2nd in my hand yet

I am having networking issues with some SMB shares that I had set up now that I have loaded Leopard. I had my MyBook ext. drive set up as a media drive with an SMB share (set up via Sharepoints) that was used with XBMC. Now, XBMC doesn't see the drive anymore and I can't see that the share still exists. I relaunched Sharepoints to reset the shares, but it crashes as soon as you try to make any changes.Anybody else having issues like this?(as a mac noob, is there another way to set up smb shares?)

installed last night to my imac... did a clean install works great. so much faster, defiantly a evolutionary step easy to keep organized and has google talk built into ichat now.
10/27/2007 12:08:53 PM
i'll put in on the macbook pro after i have a chance to make sure my cad software is still going to work
10/27/2007 12:09:34 PM
^^Any reason you chose to do a clean install over a 'upgrade'? I did an upgrade on my iMac because I have a bunch of apps, documents, and what not I didn't want to go through the process of backing up and starting over. Is there an advantage to clean install with Mac?[Edited on October 27, 2007 at 12:18 PM. Reason : .]

Ok, so I selected Upgrade for my installation of Leopard OS X.Overall, I really like this new OS X. But is anyone else experiencing sluggishness/stuttering in the Expose and Genie effect? This really annoys.
10/27/2007 12:45:54 PM
when you do a clean you start with a clean slate, really speeds everything up. I backed up my files, and after finishing os reinstall all my apps. and another benefit is tend to not install all the apps that you don't really need.
10/27/2007 1:13:32 PM
Those using "Application Enhancer" framework from Unsanity LLC may wish to backup and perform a clean install. It's suspected of causing problems detailed below:http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=printArticleBasic&articleId=9044378It's possible something else is causing these problems though.
10/27/2007 7:25:49 PM
How does Archive and Install work?
10/27/2007 8:24:51 PM
I'm guessing it will back up your entire User profile (documents, movies, music etc) and your computer settings. But not applications?
10/27/2007 8:44:37 PM
So is the next version of OS X going to be called Zebra? Just noticing a pattern with the last 2 versions. When Tiger came out they had the tiger fur wall paper and the leopard fur wallpaper....now they have the Zebra wallpaper in addition.[Edited on October 27, 2007 at 8:52 PM. Reason : n]

Eh, I'm thinking a clean install might just be the most painless.Does Mail support an entire export that I can import into a clean install of mail?
10/27/2007 9:10:16 PM
if you want painless, a clean install is most definitely not the way to go. Mac OS X upgrades are good, and for sure the easiest way to go. Upgrading from 10.4 to 10.5 will work well - it works a lot better than Windows upgrades. but if you want to do a clean install, jut for a fresh beginning or whatever, i would suggest backing up to an external HDD (you have to do that anyway, if you want to retain your data during the re-format), then run Migration Assistant. It will pull all your User settings and files (including Mail) off of the old drive and install it automagically. then, of course, you would use the external drive as your Time Machine backup
10/27/2007 9:27:46 PM
One advantage to the clean install is that it is like an automatic optimization of the file system, where all the system files are sequential on the HD, potentially speeding up application launch times and boot times, etc..
10/27/2007 9:30:02 PM
Yea, I've got a Vista partition and other things that make me not wanna go that route.Overall, it's just me being lazy, though
10/27/2007 9:32:04 PM
You can keep the vista partition, and just wipe the OS X partition.

here's some discussion on upgrade vs. clean install, and some steps on how the upgrade workshttp://lifehacker.com/software/lifehacker-faceoff/leopard-upgrade-vs-clean-installation-315917.phphttp://lifehacker.com/software/step-by-step/upgrade-mac-os-x-to-leopard-315637.php
10/27/2007 11:15:34 PM
I did upgrade cause i was eager to try it out without having to back stuff up. Now that i'm loving it...I guess i'll do a clean install. Not sure if it will make a difference though. From that article the writer says it makes no difference but all the whining users posting comments say it does. And from the user comments...not sure how anyone...dumb or intelligent could fuck up a Mac OS X upgrade. Its click click click done. Its not like you could select any options to fuck it up.

How does time machine work exactly? I want to restore my computer with a clean install. So I selected an external HDD for time machine and excluded all folders except for the Users folder to be backed up. Once the back up is complete can i do a clean install and then restore the user files from time machine or is time machine unique for each install ID?
