When I was out in Missoula there was a company based out of the local airport that had between 3 and 5 DC-3 turboprop conversions that were just beautiful. Although after reading about the cost of converting a DC-3 to turboprop I don't really see how its any more economical than buying a used twin Otter or something.

Then when I flew into San Juan, Puerto Rico there were at least 2 dozen DC-3 just rotting in the sun.

MRAPs arent mine-proof

they only increase post-incident survivability by directing the blast from up through the floor to the sides of the vehicle

i.e. youre still alive after the blast, but still probably not going anywhere

^^That's because the Macks are BULLETPROOF.

A lot of the older firetrucks you see built by Pearce and American LaFrance were powered by Detroit Diesel 2-strokes and Allison automatics. The DD engines just don't last like the Maxidyne 237 engines.

Most trucks are a conglomeration of different powertrain manufacturers. Mack trucks have the distinguishing fact that they are ALL MACK. Mack builds (or used to build) their own engines, transmissions, axles, etc. For the longest time, you couldn't even buy a Mack with an automatic, which is why Raleigh's old Macks all have manual transmissions.

The oldest truck I drove was a '72 Mack that had been wrecked and rebuilt. The truck WAS ONE YEAR YOUNGER THAN I WAS.

Well, I'm certainly not an expert on engines and motors and cars and trucks. But hearing you guys talk about them makes me feel like a little kid trying to hang around his older brother and his friends. But, I'll admit. I love the sound of diesel. I even love the smell of diesel.

That's kinda funny; engines have been one of my passions since I was in elementary school. My cousins were always so into the hotrod thing, and I felt like that a lot. Difference is/was that I was also into big trucks and heavy machinery.

A couple of my favorite shows as a kid: "The Dukes of Hazzard" and "BJ and the Bear"...

The only complaint I've had about the 'strokes so far is the damn HEUI injection system...specifically the injectors leaking or going out altogether. And they ain't cheap. The cheapest I've seen 'em is abou 175 a pop, remanufactured.

The only thing I've ever had to do to a 'Stroke was to replace one of the two HPOP lines going to the cylinder heads on a 7.3. It had sprayed engine oil all over the place. 'twas on pwnt's Excursion; the fucker was racing somebody when it burst. That one oil line (which ain't anything more than a hydraulic line) set me back a hundred bux.

gotta love the diesel truck pulls, the whailing, the smoke, the gawdawwwwful powa

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLVFcKuEj3U

(that first ford, is that a stroke? and why the second, smaller stack? is it just an outrageous wastegate pipe, or is there some funky parallel/non-symmetrically sized turbo setup going on?)

I'd be willing to bet it's a wastegate setup. There are twin turbo setups for diesels, especially pulling trucks, that are different sizes. They are sequential setups, and are capable of boost of more than 100 psi.

And here's your embed:

thanks. indeed I am well aware of sequential setups, and try my damnedest to keep up with the world of diesels pushing 100+psi boost. to me there's nothing greater than a 12V at full tilt pushing thru twin hair dryers..... hence the movie.

btw, this month's Diesel Power magazine features a 1237hp/2400lb-ft 12V, and a 66ish bronco with a 350whp 4BT that gets 30+mpg

That gets me to thinking...I have an extra old-school TO-4 sitting around at my parents' house. It came off something like a carbureted Regal T-Type or a Turbo Trans Am (like REALLY early '80s). The cartridge needs new bearings, though.

My engine has a VE injector pump...it's limited to around 230 horsepower. And the early 1st gen engines had issues with the head cracking around the injector hole.

Add to that the H1 turbo will not run out of boost with the VE pump. It's just too big. (what she said...NOT)

Seen it. Pretty amazing.

BTW, many more BIG diesels are 2-stroke than 4-stroke.

The H1 never really boosts at all unless it's under load. The exhaust turbine housing is 18cm in diameter, and the turbo has NO WASTEGATE AT ALL. Seriously, it's kind of hard to throw enough fuel to smoke heavily with the stock VE pump. You just can't turn it up that much.

You can get 'er to smoke on acceleration by changing the setting of the boost-dependent fuel control, though. But not under constant load.

yeah, i can peg the boost guage with my cummins (40psi) on a 95 degree day. only mod is the fuel plate has been moved and the starwheel bumped a bit. egt's will easily shoot to 1400-1500 when it's pushing that much, which is piston melting time. i can safely run 30-35psi and keep the egt's around 1200.

in contrast, my 7.3 stroke will only run 25-30psi in cool weather and it's pretty heavily modified. turbo, exhaust, intake, chip, etc. i've got an sct xcal2 to throw on it to replace my banks chip, but i haven't gotten around to loading some tunes on it and hooking it up. expecting another ~50-75rwhp on the race tune and better fueling all around on the street tunes. it's been a solid motor overall. i've been through 2 injectors and 1 injector wiring harness. it's got about 135k on it now, i've probably only put 1-2k on it during the past year since i've been hurt.

greg, you just picked a bad year for the 6.0. later ones are still somewhat prone to head gasket failure, especially when you start modding, but that's easily cured with a hardware upgrade. most of the injector, rod, etc. issues they fixed for the 04+ trucks. my dad's 05 is going strong with about 40k, and he's been running a WILD tune from innovative diesel for about 20k. only problem he's had is the electronic climate control unit getting stuck on high fan.

^seriously only 25-30psi on the 7.3? a good friend of mine from back home (good ole Iredell co.) has an '01 with the ATS 88mm replacement turbo (im not sure onthe rest of the specs of the turbo, that was just the advertised spec), reburned ATS 3-stage selectable chip, and intake/exhaust - and ive hit 35psi on it at half throttle-ish under normal driving conditions. He has told me that it's neared 40 before, and has blown off an intake hose as well (stock intercooler system, single clamps etc... not saying it's the shit, just to suggest he's hitting some significant boost level).
