Any way to combat the "cold air in your lungs" feeling? It sucks.

I went to Shelley Lake today. It is a nice place to run if you live by Crabtree. I like how they have some places to play soccer as well.

thank you sir. it's about time for new running shoes. the last two pair i've had were mizuno and brooks. both were great, but i think i like the brooks better and they seemed to last longer. lately i've been running more on trails than on paved surfaces, but neither are exclusive. does anyone recommend a shoe for running on trails or is it pretty much the same?

that's probably close to 3 miles or more, depending on your pace. i never ran much in high school and still consider myself a "casual" runner, but i do remember several years ago thinking "i will never make it around this damn lake without stopping". tonight, however, i went out for a run and ended up covering 8 miles total. it was supposed to be 3, and i probably ran 5 of it, but that was not the plan at all. i ran from my house to durant nature park, came out on the wrong trail (it was getting dark), and ended up on gresham lake road. no problem, except that i went the wrong way on gresham lake, ended up at capital, then had to go up to durant and all the way back to falls of nuese. i realize a lot of you probably don't know the area that well, but just know that i fucking hurt.

i started training for my half marathon this weeki dont have a race picked out yet but a good friend of mine is having her bachelorette party the same weekend as a race in her city and the plan is to run it before the party. thats in jan, not sure if i will be ready by then starting out with 2 miles running as much as i can and walking until i am able to run againgetting new kicks in a few weeks when i have the timelooking forward to this love hate relationship
8/20/2008 12:16:19 AM
you should be up to a half marathon in January no problem if you are starting now. I just started training for my second marathon two weeks ago. I am running the Kiawa Island Marathon in early December.

What's a good, local running store that I can go to in order to make sure I get the right shoes. In both running (and walking for extended periods of time) my calves feel like they're ready to explode and after doing some reading I'm thinking I might have some kind of pronation issue.

There is a place in raleigh named something like the runner's foot? or something. I have seen it mentioned here before. They will get all scientific and match shoes to your stride, etc.I always have gotten good advice from the guys at omega sports in crossroads too. I don't have alot of foot problems, though, so I do some basic research online and then come in and buy mostly. Also, the new balance shoe store off Glenwood has some knowledgeable staff. Went there last week and it turns out I was wearing one width too wide in my shoes.

It's not athlete's foot or any chain, I don't think. The place I am thinking of is an independent store that caters specifically to runners. Maybe Luisclues would know?

I really cant stand just running (even though I love physical activities- weird i know), but want to get aerobically more fit again to possibly compete in wrestling again. I really dont want to start running again, but will if I have to. For those of you that run a lot though, how can you compare it to a stationary bike? If you're keeping a good pace and increasing length of time/distance, do you see as much of a benefit as running?[Edited on August 20, 2008 at 10:43 AM. Reason : ]

i'm in Wilmington and work near the beach - so i get a nice 2.5 mile track to run on with beautiful women. i notice myself running more been running it non-stop about 3-4 days a week.i always just run it once, how hard will it be you think to run it 2x? should i work myself into it a certain way?[Edited on August 21, 2008 at 10:23 AM. all the half marathons i've seen let you do it in 3.5 hours, and the marathon in 713/3.5 = 3.7142857142857142857142857142857 mphnot a big difference between 2 miles and 13 miles, imo
8/21/2008 10:42:02 AM
^^ if it were me, i'd walk half a mile as a warm up, and also to get myself that much further along. then run until there is a half-mile left and walk that. that way you're only adding a mile to your normal run instead of doubling it. as you get better, walk less. but no matter where my starting/ending points are i always make it a point to walk a little before starting the run, just to warm up a little.^ not a big difference between running 2 miles and running 13 miles? don't be fucking retarded.
8/21/2008 10:59:28 AM
anybody know how long the trail is around lake lynn. i've been running that lately and would like to know how far it is.

Just did 4 miles this afternoon around my new neighborhood in Durham. I had stopped running over the summer and swam/biked instead. Getting back into running is going to be rough until it cools down some more. Anyone else signing up for the Raleigh marathon?

^I tend to feel the same way. When I'm in shape, the first 2-2.5 miles are a pain, but after that I can go on forever. Swimming is pretty much the same way. After 200-300m, I can go all day.

I've been looking to doing a few runs around the area, but they all disallow the use of headphones. wtf? I wanna listen to music when I run. why do they do this?
8/23/2008 12:59:46 AM
^When you're in a situation where you're running around a large group of people, it's way too easy to plow into someone because you don't hear them coming or passing you due to your headphones blasting. People that use headphones say they "check their blind spot" before changing position, but it really is very easy to zone out with music going and forget to look before pulling out of the pack (personal experience talking ).[Edited on August 24, 2008 at 11:48 AM.
