They're sending brand new consoles now.

I just received a brand new 360 (assembled on July 26th) for free.

Also, enclosed was a letter apologizing for the inconvenience, and a free 30 day XBL card.

i disagree

the unit I just received (about 5 days ago) was manufactured july 26th, 2006.

Are you sure you checked the year on that unit?

Yep pretty sure it says 2007. I was pretty darn amazed myself, but it is true. Could be just me being positive, but I think the heat coming out of the backside is a LOT less than from my old 360. This one is definitely not a refurb as it has that plastic tape on the IR sensor.

I did however give Microsoft a lot of hell about my dead 360, talking to their supervisors, and posting on the official xbox forums, even taking on the moderators on there, which might have helped my case. I remember getting an email from Major Nelson about my 360.

Nope...but then I don't care about HDMI anyway.

I doubt anyone would get the HDMI version, because they send you a new Core model, which doesn't have HDMI. I think it's just the premium and the Elite.

I didn't receive any emails from Microsoft. After 5 days, I got a call from UPS to expect a package, and then next day picked up a brand new console.

Funny thing was that there were 2 360s for people with the same first name as mine. Also, I saw about 6 white xbox boxes at the UPS depot. A lot of the first ones seem to have died.

I am pretty happy. Anyone know if I get a new 3 year warranty, or just the remaining year on my old one? Technically, it's a new 360!.

So how much would it suck to be the engineer who designed the 360's cooling solution?

How does a failure of this magnitude happen at an established company?

Haha, well I meant an engineering failure, not a business failure.

But I guess Sony did that, too, with the PS2 disc drives.

haha - I love it when people compare the small batch of bad opticals out of the 100M PS2's sold to a third of 360's failing

I'd hardly call that a small batch.

Every PS2 in my hall freshman year had read errors.

And hell, at least MS is copping to it. PS2 owners were SOL when their boxes stopped reading.

... so far, there is no telling how many units will sell from this day forth that are unaffected. its only been out for 2 years. 100m units of the ps2 were sold over its whole gen life. i am sure they will get this under control. but being that its ms you can never tell.

The fact remains, the 360 and PS2's problems aren't comparable. The root of the PS2's problem was a cheap part used in the manufacturing of the optical drives found in the first few years of PS2s. The failure was essentially do to wear and tear of that part, and generally didn't pop up till years after ownership, with many people never having any problems at all. The 360's problem is due to a design flaw in it's cooling system that's causing these things to brick months if not weeks after purchase. You're talking about a long term reliability issue on the PS2, compared to a fuck up of epic proportions that started with whoever mocked up the design of the thing. We don't even know anything about the 360's long term reliability, since it's been out for less than 2 years. If you want to compare it to the PS2, compare it to the percentage of PS2s that failed between 2000 and 2002, not over it's entire lifetime.

I don't know if you read gaming news, but 360s now have a 3 year warranty against the "design flaw". Which means that it'd last beyond those 3 years...which is pretty darn long term to me.

True, 3 years is long for an XBox. They completely scrapped the first one after 5.

Also, the 3 year warranty is only for the RROD.

Sony has to keep releasing games for the PS2 because no one wants to buy the PS3, and the PS2 is still selling more than they expected it to.

If they kill PS2, they'll kill the only source of revenue for the next 3 years.

In short, Sony's gaming biz lost tons of money, yet the company over all made tons of money from it's other divisions, not unlike MS. Sony doesn't need the PS2.

No, but you said that the 3 year warranty guarantees that the 360 will be reliable for at least 3 years, which is not true.

pretty much the only thing that has bricked the 360s are this design flaw. i would say that that 3 year warranty would give you about a 90% chance that it would last longer than 3 years.

I would wager that they don't need the PS3. I mean look here...PS3 is being sold at a loss - The gamers don't like it - There aren't really any good/forthcoming games for it. If I were a businessman, and realized that the PS3 really has no long term future plan, I'd kill it and instead make better games for the PS2. 360 at least has a long term strategic plan for Microsoft.

The 3 red lights are caused by "general hardware failure", which basically guarantees reliability to me. As for DVD drives, sure they could fail, but they aren't using anything technologically groundbreaking so you can rest assured that the DVD drive isn't gonna be an expensive fix.

5 years is the standard now. Sony has to stick with PS2 to have some type of profit in the gaming industry. I believe the N64 only lasted 5 years, are they still making gamecube games anymore? I'm not sure.

Anyway, you're only going to get about 5 years out of a console before they drop it and move on to bigger/better.

^^^I'm gonna stop before this thread turns into another system wars. You can go troll the main PS3 thread if you like. However, I will say before you go on spouting nonsense, go compare the holiday lineups for both consoles. Also, go look at the PS3 vs. 360 sales in July. Finally, the only long term plan Microsoft has realized so far with the XBox is the plan to lose $5.6 billion dollars only to be completely trumped by the Nintendo Wii in their power grab for market share.

Wrong. 5 years was the standard, until games like God of War II and Resident Evil 4.

I have yet to see actual in-game videos for anything PS3 related in the future.

Have you seen the X360 holiday lineup? Also, didn't Sony basically try to copy the Wii, and yet failed? What makes you think only Microsoft is the loser? At least, Microsoft has publicly condoned Nintendo's foresight and innovations, instead of Sony trying to copy everything.

I'd really love for you to show me how Sony copied Nintendo. The PS3 is nothing like the Wii. The PSP is nothing like the DS. And why in the hell would Sony copy a company it all but pounded into dust the past 10 years?

Oh, I'm sure he's talking about the controls. I dunno, maybe he just has poor vision and can't tell the difference between a Sixaxis and a Wiimote. Or maybe he thinks that motion sensitive control is something Nintendo invented just last year, and not something that has been tried and done for years and years on multiple platforms from arcades to home consoles (Eyetoy much?). Or maybe he's just retarded troll. Yeah, I think it's that last one.

If you want to continue arguing, either create another thread, or go into the "who has a ps3" thread

Back on Topic.

Have there been any reports of elites going down? Or do they have the same hardware as the upgraded premiums?

The newer Elites have the additional heatsink...and they come with the same 3 year warranty

well, what do you know. I get home from work and there's an overnight envelope from FedEx waiting. I open it up and there's a letter from Microsoft saying that their records show that I didn't receive the "compensatory" Xbox Live card.

So, now I have 2 months of Xbox Live free! Although, with the money they spent on overnighting me the card, I wish they had just emailed me the code for like a 6 month subscription.
