That $2.4 million would be real nice to have to spend on someone else
5/3/2007 2:35:01 PM
At best he'll probably play 50 games at 85%...I say he rides into the sunset with his ring and we throw him a huge party.
5/3/2007 3:25:32 PM
whenever wesley goes, i'd like to see his jersey in the rafters. maybe a white one to go next to francis' 10
5/3/2007 3:34:41 PM
Arturs Irbe needs to be up there too
5/3/2007 3:36:47 PM
Even though he's my second-favorite player, Irbe doesn't need to be up there.
5/3/2007 3:41:03 PM
Irbe>Roy>Hassek
5/3/2007 3:42:06 PM
irbe doesn't even belong in the same sentence as those two
5/3/2007 4:14:16 PM
even as someone who owns three irbe jerseys and a set of all-white goal equipment, i'm going to have to agree with iceplaya
5/3/2007 4:18:10 PM
speaking of retiring numbers, I need to renew my retire the number 4 leaguewide campaign.
5/3/2007 5:59:21 PM
Yup...Bobby Orr definitely should have his number retired league wide. I'm glad we agree.
5/3/2007 6:51:23 PM
My petition is now 2 strong

5/3/2007 7:43:18 PM
nobody should have their number retired by every team, its just gay
5/3/2007 8:37:19 PM
signed, Jackie Robinson
5/3/2007 8:56:07 PM
i personally dont like it.
5/3/2007 9:47:36 PM
you cant tell me that gretzky does not diserve to have his number retired by the nhl
5/3/2007 9:57:15 PM
irbe>gretzky
5/3/2007 9:58:26 PM
^^then they're probably going to have to retire crosby's # too at the rate he's going.^attn: users with less than 1000 posts....

i almost fell out of my chair with the irbe>gretzky

5/4/2007 4:14:13 AM
please note that martin gerber's shutout win in the buffalo series doesn't make cam ward a bad goalieand weekes' shutout wins in the new jersey/montreal series doesn't make irbe a bad goalie ]
5/4/2007 4:19:27 AM
i just hope we get some forwards that really mesh together for a successful powerplayit is still my opinion that our powerplay is what kept us from the playoffs, and in fact if we had made the playoffs it would have been what kept us from the finals
5/4/2007 7:03:45 AM
thatd be so shitty, if the canes ever had to retire crosby's number. let the teams decide who they want to retire. i just think its gay that before last season we had only one retired number, and it was from a guy who only ever tried to beat us
5/4/2007 8:54:01 AM
technically we don't use 3 or 9, either
5/4/2007 10:50:06 AM
I'm pretty sure it's an unwritten law that no one is allowed to have the number 99 due to the Great One's legacy. However, as far as the 'Canes go... we need a definitive #1 d-man. That and a capable third line center.Vasicek's a nub, and I could do without Letowski. And let's be honest, Irbe was good... but he was always "the little goalie that could." To put him in the same league as Hasek and Roy is laughable. He wasn't a BAD goalie, but I would never call him something like a "god of the crease." or anything.
5/5/2007 4:41:58 AM
^ its not unwritten, it is in fact written. At the 2000 All Star Game in Toronto he was honored with league wide retirement
5/5/2007 9:01:29 AM
what happened to Irbe? I remember the year after the 02 finals run when we were in the cellar he wasnt doing to good and got sent back down to the AHL didnt he? Where is he now?
5/5/2007 2:13:47 PM
ECHLAnd he came back the next season and did fairly well in a limited role. We traded him to Columbus for future considerations, I dont know if he ever played for them though. I think he is in Latvia playing now.
5/5/2007 2:19:28 PM
he played for latvia in the winter olympics last winter
5/5/2007 2:37:01 PM
He played in the ECHL for quite a while, but after we hired Laviolette, he brought Archie back and gave him a couple of starts. After all the shit that happened, it was a really nice gesture, and Archie won a couple of games. Not only did he play in the Olympics in '06, he was also the flag bearer, and I remember watching the whole opening ceremony just to see him looking like the proudest dude on the face of the earth. Later in the week, he almost singlehandedly beat the American team, making 39 saves in a 3-3 tie. Someone snapped this great picture of the Americans watching the Latvians celebrate, and to me it's very reminiscent of the Soviets watched the Americans in '80 (although the Latvians hate the Russians, so meh). After the Olympics he went home and played for HC Riga 2000 in Latvia and the Red Bulls Salzburg in Austria. Last I heard, he had signed with a team in Slovakia but had already quit because the situation wasn't satisfactory.I miss the little guy.He also influenced me juuuust a little:[/emo rant]
5/5/2007 3:13:09 PM
From when is that second picture?
5/5/2007 3:15:25 PM
Playoffs in either '01 or '02, I forget which. I'll find out.
5/5/2007 3:24:50 PM
Interesting thought:Jeremey Roenik said he'd sign with a team for league minimum just to get to 500 career goals. He's 5 short.I'm not entirely sure how he'd fit in the system, but it's fun to speculate... plus it might get some less-educated hockey fans out to a game because it's a big name.
5/5/2007 3:42:33 PM
hahaha i had forgotten about those old ass dirty pads he had
5/5/2007 3:43:40 PM
^^ It'd certainly be good for a laugh in the paper every day.
5/5/2007 3:47:35 PM
i cant stand the guy after his blatant lack of control in the philly/toronto series i want to say 2 years go where he "tripped" and high sticked mogilny in the facei heard a slight rumor that we might be interested in getting aaron ward back... just food for thought

wesley wants to come back for another year:http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/story/578175.html

WOOOOOOI really want to see them honor his jersey up in the rafters after he goes. This guy exudes toughness, and always will put himself on the line to block a shot. He has given a lot to the fans and area, he even used his day with the cup to bring it to troops in NC. To me, he should have the same amount of honor as Francis, but realistically, I'd be happy to see his number 2 'honored' kinda like our bball stuff. I want a Glen Wesley night at the RBC Center. And I saw where Recchi is negotiating with the Pens. Any chance we try to bring him back here? From what I understand he wanted to stay after last year, but we weren't willing to pay that big option we had.[Edited on May 24, 2007 at 2:35 PM. Reason : rex]
5/24/2007 2:33:20 PM
no, there is no need to get any older than we already are
5/24/2007 2:39:55 PM
Glad to have Wesley back, but I'm still hoping Hedican calls it quits
5/24/2007 2:47:23 PM
^^^ We need a top pair d-man and a third line center, not an aging winger (no matter how good he still is).

another write up about wesley and babchuk[Veteran defenseman Glen Wesley plans on returning for another season with the Hurricanes, reports the Raleigh News & Observer.Wesley, who turns 39 in October, broke his foot at the end of the 2006-07 season and didn't want that to be the cause of his retirement."That was definitely not the way I wanted to finish the year off," Wesley told the newspaper. "I'm really looking forward to coming back and getting a fresh start and wanting to win again. That should be everybody's objective in the locker room. We have a team in there that can certainly compete for it." Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford said wants to hold on to Wesley, who is the only player remaining who made the move with the team from Hartford in 1997.Meanwhile, the Hurricanes plan on trading defenseman Anton Babchuk. According to the News & Observer, the 23-year-old is being offered around the league for a second-round pick in June's draft.]
