yeah if you're a known poor tipper or an asshole in general, I really hope you enjoy your "top shelf" LIT. or your "top shelf" margaaristorita. or really any service at all, for that matter. I swear I love it when you hang out at the bar for a couple hours, order 100 bucks worth of alcohol while I keep you laughing and enjoying yourself with all the other people at the bar, hook you up with that cute girl on the other end because your pussy ass won't talk to her...I love it when you leave me three wrinkled one dollar bills on the bar. Thanks buddy, come back any time!

I just wanted to point out that a lot of restaurants have increased the server wage to $3.15 a hour, so we can all go back to tipping 10% because now servers are making a living wage.<sarcasm> Been a server forever....plan to keep doing it until I get a real job or my PhD, If you're a good server/bartender you can be worth more to a company then somebody with a crappy co-op, Anybody can try to argue against that but we'll win

I am coming into this thread late, but here's my 2 cents...The described situation is completely inappropriate. A tip is never required, but you are considered a social deviant if you don't tip. He should have never ran after you like that. If it were me, I would have told him to stay out of dark alleys. This brings up another question though...is the $1/drink tip at a bar necessary? I typically just do 20% of my tab if I have a large tab with a lot of drinks on it, or if I have just a couple drinks then I will do the $1/drink.
4/9/2007 2:46:31 PM
i don't have a set scale of what I tip. I try to generally multiple the tax by 3 and use that as a guideline, but the majority of the time i leave my tip on my debit card, so I'll just round to a number that suits me.as far as bar tipping goes, I usually tip every other drink if i'm drinking beer. (unless it's like $2.25 a beer, then you get the .75 every drink) I tip every drink if they have to mix.
4/9/2007 3:18:20 PM
Yea coming in late too, but are we to infer that the waiter saw no tip on the table, and went up and asked the cashier if they had left the tip on the credit card? Wow that is pretty bad. That would happen all the time then because most people pay by credit card and leave the tip on there. Especially around campus where everyone pays by credit.

Why don't you just start a tab so you don't under up tipping 50% of your total bill?

his action was absolutely inappropriate.

i have a wallet card called the table tipper (tm) that has whole dollar amts from $1-100, and the columns: tax 5%, tax 6%, tax 7%, tax 8.5%, tip 15%, tip 20%. i can usually get the right amt before my bf can do the math in his head. it's very handy.

I work at a pizza place. We get paid minimum wage, plus delivery tips. I wouldn't really feel uncomfortable asking someone about a tip, gas isn't free.
4/9/2007 9:12:22 PM
why are there all these threads on tipping..if you like the service.. throw the guy/girl some cashif you dont.. throw less cash/no cash
4/9/2007 9:14:24 PM
i just went out to eat at a cheap pizza/spaghetti joint.$30 tab counting tax. $8 tip.the gal was super friendly, good service, and we left a helluva mess because of our 2-year olda pennypincher with the tip calculator would have been $5. but WTF is an extra $3 anyhow? i used to spend $3 on a pack of cigarettes. I can lose $3 in loose change. or i can give it to a good, friendly server and spread some positive karma. nothing really makes a server's day than to get a good solid 20-25% tip. and its highly likely that yours will come right before or after some asshole stiffs them. so beleive me, they remember it and appreciate it.[Edited on April 9, 2007 at 11:38 PM. after reading this...I am going to quit tipping....It's not my fucking fault you want to be a fucking server.I don't eat out much so I don't worry about you shitting in my food either.
4/10/2007 12:56:35 AM
I tip 20% for everyday dining. You have to REALLY fuck up for me to lower a tip. I don't know if I've ever left no tip at all. When I eat somewhere good (St. Jacque's, Angus Barn, Caffe Luna, etc) I usually tip 25% or more. We talk a lot to our servers and get feedback on suppliers of food and crap like that (my wife and I like to cook so we are curious). The only thing that irks me about some restaurants is the insane markup on wine. Something I pay $15 from a retailer should not cost me $45 in a restaurant.

I don't understand why I should have to tip more, for crappier service, just because the food is more expensive. As in, I go to Abbey Road or Jack Astors with the wife, the bill is around 25, I tip 5 if the service is decent. Then we go to a place like Ruth's Chris or some little Italian place where the only difference is the food is more expensive and generally the wait staff sucks balls, but I am expected to tip more just because they overprice their food. I think tips should be based on number of people served, amount of food ordered, and quality of service. Fuck this straight 15-20% shit.
4/10/2007 8:29:09 AM
Typically most of those higher end restaraunts will try to have a better wait staff that would earn that tip, but yes, lots of them can just suck if they're hired on a different basis (looks). As I said before, you do have to tip out on the amount of sales for each check to the restaraunt itself. And it really does suck, and I imagine most servers would change it if they could.
4/10/2007 8:33:50 AM
I believe I remember a scene in The Sopranos where Christopher doesnt tip and a waiter runs out and asks him why he didnt tip. Anyone remember how that turned out?
4/10/2007 8:46:37 AM
yep
4/10/2007 8:50:13 AM
I have never eaten that much expensive food as they did that night. Their bill was like 1300 wasnt it?
4/10/2007 8:51:56 AM
^ i don't know about this.what happens? he gets beaten up?and if you eat food worth the waiter's monthly salary and don't leave any tip, then of course you are not a human.
4/10/2007 9:00:10 AM
Christopher and his friends go to a nice restaurant, stay hours and run up a bill of over $1000. They didn't bring enough money for tip so they just leave a few bucks. The waiter is indignant and confronts them in the parking lot. While they're arguing, the waiter gets a heart attack or seizures. Christopher freaks out, shoots him, and drives away. This is from wikipedia:
4/10/2007 9:46:04 AM
I think it was because paulie was starting to make Christpher pay for stuff and Christopher didnt expect it to be so much. Paulie was wanting to run up the tab on purpose to stick Chris with it.
4/10/2007 9:50:10 AM
I go with the standard 15% unless the service is better or poor enough to be noteworthy. I usually round up a little--usually to the nearest dollar or $5, depending on how expensive of a bill we're talking about, mostly to make the mental math easier and to err on the side of not screwing the server.i also usually temper that with a quick sanity check, though...I quickly think to myself, "if I were that particular waiter/waitress, would I feel like I did more work than this tip indicates?" if so, I bump it up some.
4/10/2007 10:09:43 AM
^^Christopher had been complaining about having to pay every time for every meal, because he was the lowest of the bosses. Paulie had picked up the check from the last meal because Christopher said he didn't have his wallet or something, so Christopher knew he had to pick this one up. Paulie deliberately picked the extremely expensive restaraunt to spite him. In the end though, they came together in defending each other and killing the waiter.

Any decent waiter/ress makes much more than minimum wage and probably hourly more than most entry level jobs. So to people who complain about tips STFU, you are unskilled labor, doing something I could and would rather do myself. There's nothing magical about bringing my food out and filling my drink.I generally tip well though... anywhere between 20-35%. Really depends how much the bill was. If I'm at a bar and get food and a couple of drinks that are on special and the bill for my 5 drinks and food was 10 bucks, my tip will be 50% probably. If it's a semi-nice place and the bill is a decent I'll generally just do 20%.Anyway what I'm sayin is stop complaining you're overpaid for the most part. That doesn't stop me from tipping well though, just don't complain when someone does tip poorly.not that anything I said wasn't said 10 times already
4/10/2007 10:36:23 AM
Poor tips always get evened out with good tips. Every time. Typically we will make an average of 18% off sales every night. Or well I used to. It's true, waiting tables is probably the best unskilled labor there is out there, paying very well, usually 100 to 200 for 5 hours of work. Getting to wake up late, stay up late, is awesome. But what youre making will never increase.Which is why I have to now have a real job.
4/10/2007 10:53:35 AM
4/10/2007 11:00:12 AM
Yep, with a party typically over 8 people, 18% is automatic.Mainly so you don't have to deal with the jews who are going to tip badly no matter how the service was, since your party of 12 took up all of his time refilling, getting drinks, food, etc.But you can ask the manager not to put it on there. They have the right to tell you yes or no.
4/10/2007 11:16:56 AM
If you have a problem with an automatic tip, don't go out with a large group of people. Like the previous poster said, you're essentially taking up all of the waiter's time and he'd like a little guarantee for that.
4/10/2007 11:18:57 AM
When we were at this resturant it was as soon as they had opened and we were the only party in this servers area anyway. We had 8 people. We all pretty much had water to drink. I don't think that it was too much to ask of our server to keep us filled on water. It would have been much more understanding if the place was packed, but it was 11 am, we were outside waiting for them to unlock the doors, and we were the ony people in the smoking section. All the other tables had other servers we were here only table, and if she wouldn't give us the service we deserved then she wouldn't get the tip she thought she was getting anyway.Over half of our group even worked in the food serving industry and knew that the tips is how they get paid, and they were the ones that were the most upset about it.[Edited on April 10, 2007 at 11:26 AM.
