Man I want an EVO also. My biggest gripe is wind noise, actually. That + turning radius/AWD. The cars I look at now are;C5 Chasis Corvette z06,e36 Chasis M3,e46 Chasis M3,e39 Chasis M5,EVO VIII, EVO IX, 996 Chasis 911.They're all under or around $30k. Ahmet

$32k could buy a lot of cocaine.

I'm not too hot on the e34. If I had a car like a z06, I'd more likely keep a pick up on the side. Infact, I should add a wrx wagon to that list +possibly a trailer or something. I still like M3s a lot, I do also enjoy change though. I don't know how much the e46 resale will drop w/the introduction of the new chasis M3, seems like the earliest cars wouldn't be effected much (2001-2002), which is about what I would buy anyway. I am going to drive a couple more 996s, but I imagine I won't like them so much either GT3 is just not in the cards, man I wish I was rich.Ahmet

I just... I get close to thinking I've decided, then I think... EVO money would easily buy an e36 M3 +coil overs +supercharger +real brakes.Ahmet
2/2/2007 8:22:40 PM
but an Evo IX will put 330 hp to the ground through all 4 tires and run low 12s with an exhaust, boost controller, and ECU flash.and have you driven one? i think the handling is outstanding. an Evo IX, lightly modded as I described, would be tough to beat, even with a totally built E36 M3...and you'd have a new car with a warranty, 4-doors, AWD (if snow is an issue).and I'm a BMW fan who would LOVE to have a hotrodded E36 M3.
2/2/2007 8:53:55 PM
yeah but ahmets not looking for strait line time/speeds (IMO).its not hard to take down an evo with any of those cars he posted.[Edited on February 2, 2007 at 9:23 PM. Reason : ]

oh, i understand that. i'm saying that i was surprised at how well the Evo handles. the weight distribution sucks, and I wasn't totally sold on the drivetrain layout. So far, I'm pleasantly surprised. it's outstanding for a bone stock car.

The EVO has very high limits, and it's quite a capable car/platform. As far as driving dynamics go, I think the steering is numb (but very quick + the chasis IS responsive) and throttle response is not linear. Add weight distribution +AWD and wind noise/no fold down rear seats, and you've got the complete list of my problems w/it. I will admit this though, I have not pushed one hard enough to rotate one, and it may be a brilliant car to drive on track. I freely admit that I really enjoyed the Integra Typre-R I drove around VIR, but that's not enough to want a car really...Anyway, I think I'm going to give an M3 another shot. Should be picking it up mid next week. PS: I'm not all about straight line speed, that doesn't keep me from thinking that any car has "enough" power. FWD cars excluded, my girlfriend's new Civic Si has "too much" power, torque steer be damned.Ahmet

^ I don't really find the steering to be particularly numb (hell, I distinctly remember reading a review in Sport Compact Car saying that the Evo's steering makes "a Miata's steering feel almost numb, by comparison." And yes, the steering is very quick, with a stiff chassis and seemingly well-sorted (I haven't had a chance to really wring it out, yet) suspension. The weight distribution does indeed suck donkey dick, but the car handles impressively despite it. I have a love/hate relationship with AWD. I will admit, though, that my verdict is still somewhat out on that one, because I have a zillion miles racked up driving the wheels off of RWD cars, but this is my first experience with AWD. The throttle response is also quite non-linear, but it simply feels like exactly what it is...a turbocharged car blowing 20 psi. That's one reason I think that AWD might be the best option for this one...particularly if you mod it, it's easier to keep things settled down if you don't modulate the surging throttle response well (I remember my Miata...if you weren't disciplined with the right foot, the driving experience when the turbo spooled up was somewhere in between that of an Outlaw spring car and a Brahma bull. it was entertaining when you provoked it intentionally, but it was white knuckles waiting to happen if you weren't careful and smooth with it). With the Evo, it's more of an exercise in pointing it where you want it to go, then squeezing the trigger (which I fully understand may be less rewarding at times than dancing through the corners with something like an S2000, "normal" Miata, or E36/E46).The wind noise is noticeable, but I can get over that. Exhaust drone will probably be drowning it out fairly soon, anyway. The lack of fold down seats is kinda gay, but basically because I'm a skiier (and the AWD makes it otherwise very well suited for that job).I have rotated it once, so far. I can't remember if I trail braked or simply lifted from giving it a lot of throttle. On throttle, I've noticed that it is pretty damned neutral (more so than my E46, and maybe even more so than my S2000?? I'll have to go sling it around a couple of corners and pay closer attention)and yes, I'm with you on being more into great handling than straight line speed, but I also concur in that I've never driven a car with "enough" power.

We do disagree on the steering side of things. It doesn't have the fluid communication of a BMW or Porsche, though it's quicker than any I can think of from either of those manufacturers (the 996 chasis GT3 is close, but still not quite as quick). The quick ratio with the responsive chasis gives a great illusion of good steering feedback, which I maintain that the EVO does not have. Otherwise it's a car to lust after, well mannared w/lots of potential, and suprisingly focused out of the box.Ahmet

i test drove both evo IX and VIII. it was definitely nice and quick in lower gears, but somewhat tiresome ride after 15 min test drive. i also wasnt impressed with higher gears, but im sure few bolt ons would resolve that. also, i couldnt imagine living with one on a day to day basis. i maybe getting old also, coming from modded FWD GTI, i got tired of on/off switch throttle. in this respect evo is even worse than 1.8T since turbo spools up later in the rev range and it comes on more abruptly. thats all cool if you are in a mood, but sometimes coming from work at 7pm on a gloomy winter day, i just want littlebit of peace and civility. in this regard E36 M3 cannot be beat as a perfect compromise. my dad always says..."best car is the new car", so in that respect advantage is surely on EVO side, just not in my book

^^ oh, there's no doubt that either an E36 or E46 is a better all around package. I say that having just come from a 330Ci (with 5 spd and sport package, of course). I just decided that the whole "compromise" thing just wasn't working out, and I wanted something focused and balls-out (but with room for a baby seat).

Large turbo should not have to mean non-linear delivery (that'd be the tuning). Off/on throttle is quite abrupt also. Neither of these seem like a big deal when driven hard, given the nature of the car, point/mash and it goes.Ahmet
2/6/2007 11:19:03 AM
smooth powerband maybe, but by its very nature, a turbo is going to have an exponential power/rpm graph, assuming this isn't a variable geometry turbo. I suppose variable cam profiles and maybe a twin intake runner setup might do something to aleviate this, but I don't see where timing and fuel trims could compensate for the airflow changes created by a turbo.
