i have a slow connection here, so i am not going to bother looking it up, so can someone tell me:is the phone CDMA or GSM?i mean, could i buy it from the US, and bring it overseas and just put a sim card in?if so, that would be super cool.if not, apple is stupid and doesn't know how to make money.
1/9/2007 3:07:33 PM
cingular means GSM I'm pretty sure.
1/9/2007 3:09:39 PM
and what's up with 8 GB?i thought 30 GB flash laptops and 64 GB flash memory sticks were out from some manufacturers.it wouldn't have been too difficult for apple to do 16 or 20 GB.[Edited on January 9, 2007 at 3:10 PM. Reason : ^so i could put a sim card in it outside the US?]

prices are with 2 year contract (from pictures of presentation)Apple may lock the phone up making it only usable on cingular networks although I suspect that would only be because of some contractual agreement with cingular. I know lots of cingulars phones (sony ericsson e.g.) can be used overseas with other services/sim cards.

what's up with the Airport Extreme only having a 10/100 Ethernet port?Grantetd, 100M Ethernet full-duplex will outrun about any 802.11n network in any realistic environment, but if you want to "move" TV shows/movies from your Mac to Apple TV's 40gig hard drive, you now are limited by 100MEthernet or 802.11g/n. vs., giving those with Cat5e/6 wring in their house no option for GigE. I mean it's really kind of nitpicky, but when even the Mac Mini has a GigE port, it's a bit of a head scratcher.Oh, finally found public info about the iPhone name issue.http://www.thestreet.com/_yahoo/newsanalysis/techtelecom/10331512.htmlcm_ven=YAHOO&cm_cat=FREE&cm_ite=NA "Apple made a last minute agreement with Cisco (CSCO - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating) for use of the iPhone name."]

blackberry stock just tanked $11.17 and apple is up~7
1/9/2007 4:05:37 PM
I dunno why though. Unless apple tries to get into the enterprise push email business I dont see them touching RIM's customer base.Buying a blackberry for a personal phone is kinda dumb imo.[Edited on January 9, 2007 at 4:07 PM. Reason : .]

fucking sexxxxy..i knew it would be too difficult for apple to bring UMTS off the bat. What you got to say sandsanta?
1/9/2007 4:10:55 PM
likely because they lost the hoodie market... go to the mall and see who's carring the blackberries and the treos
1/9/2007 4:11:25 PM
I'd like to see apple include a cablecard port and an integrated atsc/ntsc/qam tuner as well as a much bigger drive on the appletv
1/9/2007 4:24:11 PM
^ Then you'd have a TiVo, not a media streamer.
1/9/2007 4:32:27 PM
1/9/2007 4:36:34 PM
it would be both. something that I'm sure EVERYONE would rather have. fuck hdtv over wifi, shit doesnt work
1/9/2007 4:40:44 PM
^ And something that would cost a lot more, and probably require a monthly fee ala TiVo.Apple's all about simple. Building an HTPC that records/stores/plays back broadcast TV is not simple. for the folk Apple is going after I guess.
1/9/2007 4:43:50 PM
1/9/2007 5:02:12 PM
the point is, you pay for cable already, even basic, now you can record hdtv over qam. you get a ton of subscription hdtv content? great now you can record it too. It really makes no sense to not put a gigE port on it though, streaming 1080p h264 over wifi or 10/100 is iffy at best. 720p avi is already more than 802.11g can handle

I don't know about the places where you work, but our company spends comparable amounts on blackberries. They even send people to those silly training courses that cost ~$2000. The service pricing is also similar.I suspect that Apple will also end up being the catalyst for lower/simpler data service pricing from cell carriers, as it has for various other technologies. The initial market is definitely not poor people, though.

I was really hoping it would be a bigger screen video ipod...... The iphone is cool, but it would be better as an 80gb ipod with that screen.....that would be sweet.I wonder if it would require a data plan from cingular...ie a pda phone?[Edited on January 9, 2007 at 7:24 PM. Reason : .]

My contract with Cingular is coming up. If apple or some other 3rd party comes up with a folding keyboard for that phone I'm picking it up, period.
1/9/2007 7:30:58 PM
^^It probably wont require it, but you will of course need it to utilize all of the features^there are already bluetooth keyboards for phones so it probably wont take long for one to be compatible
1/9/2007 7:34:01 PM
I can't wait for the first richie richies on campus to get this...remember when folks first started getting the RAZR? they'd walk around the brickyard talking to themself just so folks were like "OMG RAZR LETS BWN!"

v. nice phone, sad it has to go to cingular
1/9/2007 8:06:17 PM
I like it, I'm not a fan of flip phones anyway really, and since its so thing I feel life I can slip in my pocket or jacket really easy anyway so as it stands without using it, I like the taller form factor
1/9/2007 8:09:01 PM
i hope they resolved the scratching screen issues they've had in the past too, this is going to SUCK if you have to have a case for it.
1/9/2007 8:23:45 PM
yeah, now that i'm over the initial reaction of i have some rational thoughts....1) i too just realized there is no GPS. that sucks, especially with the seeminly tight integration with Google Maps. big oversight.2) this puts the regular iPod shopper in a big delimma. The current video iPods are now second rate. why would anyone want to buy a 30 or 80GB iPod with a tiny ass screen when there is a sleek, nice new wide screen iPod out. Within a couple months, they have to introduce a new line of iPods to replace the current 5G iPods. These will have large hard drives, plus the widescreen, touch screen, plus bluetooth, but no phone or internet. 3) i hope they have some revolutionary screen material that a) doesn't scratch, b) is glossy, and yet c) slides frictionlessly under the finger. I hate to think that every time you touch it you get smudges, or your fingers kind of skip along the glossy surface4) it's sad to see the click wheel go. From watching the Quicktime videos on apple.com, it looks like to scroll you have to move your fingers back and forth in a line (only touching in one direction, of course). And while i'm sure the acceleration is very nice, the genius of the clickwheel is that you never have to lose contact with the surface, and a circular motion is natural, where a repeated linear motion isn't really

What would be the purpose of the USB connection on the back of the AppleTV?
1/9/2007 9:25:24 PM
As of now, the iTV USB port is not for anything except service and diagnostics.

^it was enough for your mom last nightLord of the dorks!
1/9/2007 10:40:47 PM
oh yeah, one more thing - 5) they didn't show direct access to the iTunes Store via the phone and it doesn't say anything on apple.com. They would be stupid not to allow you to browse, search and buy from the Store directly on the iPhone.
1/9/2007 11:00:08 PM
some have said it in this thread but....Only supporting EDGE is lame. hell the HTC Cingular 8525 supports UMTS and my WM5 has wifi b/g and does EDGE.... Guess what... data over EDGE is SLOW. It doesn't even compare to the speeds of EV-DO. Anyone that thinks they are going to do any kind of cool data shit is fooling themselves.... Skype on this device? Hell no.Cool phone, I'd play with it, but buy it? Nope. Cingular already has HSDPA/UMTS deployed in Raleigh/Durham.iPhone -- Whoop de fucking doo

it does wifi, thats really all i need.
1/10/2007 12:48:40 AM
^ me too.I wouldn't even buy a data package, because they're too expensive for what little away-from-wifi surfing I would desire to do.
1/10/2007 2:06:11 AM
They should have an option to record calls for playback later.
