Midnight madness guys just brought it up. Basically, unc having too much depth hurt them today because there were minutes when hansbrough and lawson should have been in to play most of the game but guys were in and not doing shit. its best to have a concrete 5 with solid guys that are definate bench players. unc has like 3 starters and then 9 guys who might play any ammount of time.Any rythem they ever got into was ruined by a wave of subs.

It's only because they let us control the tempo. If they could have gotten us to run with them, then it would have worked perfectly.
2/4/2007 12:34:43 AM
im getting worried about next year. atsur is soo important to this team if degand or jackson aren't for real we could be about the same again.
2/4/2007 10:32:38 AM
All we need is someone who can handle the ball. And I hope that being a PG they can do that. Grant is a SG and it shows, boy did it show yesterday, haha.We don't really need the PG to score a lot, just carry the ball up the court and not turn it over. So if they can handle the ball well that'll be enough.
2/4/2007 10:41:56 AM
but this is a pg offense and we need someone with the ability to run pick and roll. atsur was able to bring the ball up against bc and uva but he was too hurt to drive and shoot so we still sucked. we are not good unless he is running the offense which involves more than walking the ball up.
2/4/2007 10:48:12 AM
Is this some sort of joke? You're worried about us losing Atsur???Look Atsur played hard yesterday I'll give him that. But Lawson was having his way with him. We had to switch up defenses to "hide" Atsur.Atsur is not a true point guard and he had a LOT of difficulty yesterday. Our offensive sets started 35 feet from the basket because he had so much trouble with the pressure UNC applied. He was constantly picking up his dribble in trouble spots and he even got called for five seconds once when he couldnt shake Lawson. What showed yesterday is that with ANYONE at PG we are a dangerous team. We just dont have enough ball handling and thats basically what is keeping us from being a consistent offense.
2/4/2007 10:55:08 AM
^agree
2/4/2007 10:57:37 AM
We're just not used to seeing a PG successfully run a pick and roll.
2/4/2007 11:03:34 AM
we definately hid atsur to KEEP HIM ON THE FLOOR because he had 3 fouls. lawson is a fast kid and has his way with most people. atsur wasn't at full speed (he said 70% affter the game) but his defense is usually one of his strengths. i still don't expect him to keep up with lawson. mustafah couldn't even keep up with him. watch another unc game. they trap and put alot of pressure on the ball. bobby hurley would pick up his dribble sometimes against the silly trapping pressure unc applies.maybe your anyone theory is right but i think they still need to be able to shoot the 3 well and drive under control to be able to run the pick and roll unstopably like atsur does.
2/4/2007 11:05:27 AM
I don't know about you, but Ferguson should be our one man team this year, next year, and for years to come. Who else can represent the masses like Ferg?...............yeah
2/4/2007 11:19:07 AM
Im not trying to hate on Atsur by any means. He gave a phenomenonal effort given his talent level. But i think we can all agree he's not a true PG. Hell, he was never recruited to play PG and has probably started as a PG ~10 times. He had a LOT of trouble yesterday getting the offense going. UNC's pressure is pretty fucking sick and you're right when you say the disrupt a lot of offenses.I just think if we had a true PG on the floor yesterday we wouldn't have had so many damn turnovers and we honestly would have wiped the floor with UNC.A win is a win, but considering how well we shot the ball yesterday the game was definitely closer than it should have been.Im not nitpicking or trying to put a negative spin on an awesome victory, im just pointing out that if we want to win games on a CONSISTENT basis we have to eliminate all these 20+ turnover performances.
2/4/2007 11:25:32 AM
he needs to stop picking up his dribble

Yeah I think we're pointing out that we need a PG to make our offense work, and I think the point is that only Atsur is able to actually come close to successfully playing the point. So if we lose him and Johnson and Delegand don't work out, we're stuck with Grant playing the point, and that's really not a good thing.
2/4/2007 1:00:23 PM
Marques Johnson is now practicing with the team, Degand has been practicing with the team all year. given this much time and this many great point guards for coaches at least one of these guys are going to be good by ACC play next year

i told you guys on page 2 depth could hurt a team. roy playing too many guys is exactly why unc isn't doing as well as they should. lawson sits 15 minutes per game (almost half) for frazor and quinten thomas to play. wright and hansbrough could easily get 5-10 extra minutes at 100% efficiency but they sit while thomson and stephenson eat up alot of minutes.
3/1/2007 11:32:12 PM
It's now depth that hurts a team, but knowing how to utilize it which Roy doesn't
3/1/2007 11:33:26 PM
Well, they could just be doing this to save those legs for the tourney. But I doubt they'd give up a #1 seed to do it.
3/1/2007 11:37:22 PM
well its hard to utilize 12 guys properly without playing all americans 25 minutes per game or having chemistry problems.5 definate starters with 3 (maybe 4) solid guys that know they are bench players is prime. anything more becomes a problem that will lead to transfers at the very least.
3/1/2007 11:37:37 PM
If ferg plays next year were done
3/1/2007 11:56:42 PM
another issue with Roy's super deep bench and playing all the players is that it keeps them happy.this means that some of the players might opt. into staying at UNC instead of going pro.this might have some impact on their scholarship allotment and recruiting if all the players decided to stick around.how many seniors do they have other than Terry this year? anyone know or want to look it up
3/2/2007 10:00:24 AM
Terry and Miller i think are the only 2and i dont think they have any freshmen coming in as the one offer went to UCLA instead?[Edited on March 2, 2007 at 10:02 AM. Reason : .]

playing 10 minutes instead of 6 minutes is going to stop someone from transferring?
3/2/2007 10:56:08 AM
ahh, good pointi can see that
3/2/2007 10:56:27 AM
alot of people are under some illusion that unc has 10 guys that could be playing in the nba or something.
3/2/2007 11:16:05 AM
I honestly don't know how they got so many top players this year.If you were a top 20 player in the country, would you go to a team that already has 3 players in your class in the top 10? And has 2 top 20 players from last year's class?I would go somewhere that I could be a star and get a large percentage of the team's stats, instead of being a role-player at UNC.[Edited on March 2, 2007 at 12:08 PM. Reason : ^ They have at least 5-6]
3/2/2007 12:08:24 PM
so, instead of winning [or chance of] a National Championship you would rather be the only star on the court for your respected team?[Edited on March 2, 2007 at 12:41 PM. Reason : ...]

If it would help me get into the NBA, then yes, I probably would.People for the most part choose the college that will most help them earn a living, not the one where they will have the most fun the years they are in college.
3/2/2007 12:45:09 PM
^^^^depends on your priorities...be THE man and get exposure a la adam morrison...get drafted...or get lost in the mix with a title team if you're not the star...depends
3/2/2007 12:46:38 PM
it doesnt matter if you go to a no name school and starif no one in the country knows who you are / what does matter how many stats you putesp. if you are playing in a weak conf. i would rather go to a top tier conf. and play for a top schoolthen it is up to your hard work to earn a starting job
3/2/2007 12:47:03 PM
And here I thought this thread would have relevant and substantial information about Johnson.
3/2/2007 12:47:21 PM
yeah, we need to get back on topicim shutting up
3/2/2007 12:47:55 PM
^^^it worked fine for people like Gerald Wallace (Alabama) and Ricky Davis (Iowa State), both drafted to the NBA after their freshman years[Edited on March 2, 2007 at 12:48 PM. Reason : ^^^]
3/2/2007 12:48:07 PM
I didn't mean if the draft were today.I was talking about potential NBA candidates. And you can bet Lawson would at least be drafted, MAYBE second round, but he would go.
