Yea, I have had some big sharks come chase up AJ's and last year had numerous Mahi's chomped up by sharks.

let me clear a few things up:

striped bass rockfish or striper, preferably the first, but both are acceptable
mahi dolphin...take your mahi back to the pacific you california fruitcake, j/k, but the nc locals will laugh at you for calling them "mahi"

and the things that breathe air and look like flipper are called "porpoises", not "dolphins"

^it's illegal on the roanoke (which is weldon) after april 30

Quote :
"Under a new harvest management approach, the entire Roanoke River opened to striped bass harvest from March 1 through April 30, 2007."

http://www.ncwildlife.org/

if you get caught it's $85/fish (last i checked) and they confiscate the fish

have fun

[Edited on May 4, 2007 at 10:28 AM. Reason : striper, not stripper, for god's sake]

people not obeying regulations or practicing catch and release even when the season is in is part of the reason we have to keep dealing with strict regulations/seasons

when it comes to hunting and fishing, if one does not like the regulations as they stand the best thing they can do to get them changed is to obey them

learn some outdoors ethics, some of the best conservationists are avid hunters and fishermen

attitudes like this^ hurt the image of sportsmen everywhere

if you only fish for the food it's much cheaper (after gas for truck and boat, bait, tackle, etc.) to just buy it at the fishmarket.

sorry for the rant, i guess i just get more enjoyment from catching the fish or hunting the deer than from actually eating it

EDIT: i thought you might understand my argument here, but then i saw this

They extended it one week... it goes out this weekend unless they extend it again... which is very possible as they have not yet hit the quota of rock that they like to be caught each year.

As far as rock fishing goes this is about the worst year for them I can remember. I have only caught 6 this year and none that were above the slot.

Roanoke River, I fish around williamston hamilton and jamesville, never really fished for rock up in weldon but most of the people I know there fish with live bait on circle hooks (or j hooks)

Quote :
"Roanoke River-bound anglers who have yet to harvest their limit of two striped bass per day have until 11:59 p.m. on May 6 to do so. Last week, the Commission extended the harvest season in the Roanoke River Striped Bass Management Area by one week to give anglers more opportunity to harvest their limit.

In addition to a 2-fish per day creel limit, other regulations for harvesting striped bass on the Roanoke River are:

* 18-inch minimum length limit;
* No striped bass between 22 and 27 inches may be possessed at any time;
* Only one striped bass larger than 27 inches may be included in the daily creel limit.

To help minimize stress-related mortality in striped bass, particularly as the water temperatures get warmer, anglers must use a single barbless hook or lure with a single barbless hook when fishing in the upper river from April 1 to June 30. Anglers can make hooks barbless by crimping down the barb with pliers.
"

they had it on another page

sorry jeepxj420, good luck this weekend, remember to smash your barbs

[Edited on May 4, 2007 at 2:03 PM. Reason : ^i fish jamesville and goldsboro w/ cut bait on circle hooks]

If you fish lower river ( williamston, jamesville, hamilton) etc you can use hooks with barb's. If you are going this weekend Jeep and want to catch alot of rock let me know I will tell you where to go.
