"the reality is that he really was a pretty solid post player"

hardly, maybe a solid post defender, but not really. I'll give you that he was an above average passer for a big man, but that, coupled with his decent 3 point shooting (which seemed to disappear from time to time) were his best qualities.

but the past is the past. I don't see how we could finish dead last in the ACC. With our good-to-above-average starting lineup (why does everyone hate on Atsur), I can see us pulling out some games that no one expected us to win. We'll need to play some point guard by committee and we'll also need at least one breakout player (most likely fells or costner). I could see McCauley contributing pretty decently. I was impressed with some of the things he did last year in limited action.

Grant should be solid, but obviously our biggest weakness will be defending the post. Hopefully big nasty foreigner can be more than just a foul machine. any production from that guy is a huge plus in my book.

if you've watched our team the last couple years and still feel confident in engin atsur leading the break, breaking the press, and controlling the offense, then i dont know what to say. he seems like a deer in headlights when anyone applies pressure. he can shoot though, and he sees the court well. i hope we have an offense that doesnt put too much pressure on him to play as a pure pg. if we can get by with wing players sharin some pg duties, we'll be all right.

supposedly Fergesun can run the point, and he will be eligable by the time we get to the tough games.

bottom line is this year isn't going to be much to talk about but as Lowe brings in more players like JJ Hickson (and hopefully Tracy Smith) we should improve alot within the next couple of seasons

Engin atsur leading the break? hahahaha. Just like how he did against texas. Breaking the press?? hahahahah. Our best chance at breaking the press is hoping that the 7' 3" guy is coordinated enough to catch the ball, not travel, pass it across halfcourt, and shoot free throws.

You could have said "I feel good about atsur guarding white guys and shooting 3 pointers," and it would have actually made sense.

i dont understand the hating on atsur either. He's a flexible guard who gets the job done. Ever since he had a cold streak on 3's last year everyone has been all over him. Yeah he's not fast enough to dribble around the press, but he plays smart and makes the right passes to break the press most of the time. I'm confident he'll have a consistent stroke this season and people will get off his back

Yeah, basically Atsur is the guy that is going to help the team by being clutch, limiting turnovers, and putting on a clinic with defence.

He is not a strong athletic guy that will dunk and take it to the rim. Atsur LOVES to use the glass eventhough many believe that kind of move to be riskier than just posterizing someone.

Plus he is a smart player and knows how to get the foul called.

How many game winners has he had in his career? I remeber a time in Maryland when he was cold all night and drilled a three with less than 40 sec to keep the pack in the game.

It's not that Atsur sucks it is just that he is not going to be able to play up to his full potential if he is in charge of ball handling/distribution.

"I don't understand why we are supposed to be so bad this year.

We were fairly good last year, right?

What did we fucking lose from last years team?

Evtimov is addition by subtraction.

Herb is quite possibly addition by subtraction.

Bethel was a solid player but he was inconsistent.

Bennerman had the potential to be a great player but he was held back under Herb's system.

Brackman played horribly last year due to injury and asthma.

Simmons was an incredible talent but he was so underutilized in Herb's system its not even funny. What, we are doomed without a 6'11 post player roaming the perimeter and getting in foul trouble defensively???

You mean to tell me that these five players and a hard headed coach are gonna be the difference between top tier ACC team and cellar dweller? Please. Duke was essentially a two man team last year and they lost them BOTH. Then you add in the loss of their best ball handler (Dockery) and an injury to their only PG (that little white faggot that wears timbalands). So why isn't the sky falling in Durham too?

What the FUCK is wrong with our lineup Atsur, Fells, Grant, Costner, McCauley? There is no fucking way we finish last. Do people even know that UVA, Clemson, FSU, Wake are in our conference?"

Well look, we don't suck like all of you thought.

If we play like we have so far... ESPICALLY in the Michigan game then theres no way we finish last in the ACC. Hell if we do finish last but play all year like we did in the Michigan game.. fuck it.. it will be a fun year!

At times we looked great out there and at other times we didn't.

I really wish Grant would give up his notion that he's an awesome basketball player and then he might actually become one.

Defense was also still a bit sloppy, though I'm glad we actually used a zone.

the only reason we didn't look great for the entire game is b/c we were trying to rest and give our guys a break, minus the first 3 min.

We absolutely whooped Michigan's ass without our ONLY ball handler and ONLY senior.

We beat them with a walk-on playing 31 minutes.

Gavin Grant is a fucking stud, just wait till ACC play comes around and he gets more of the calls that he wasn't getting tonight. What a great job he did getting our offense going tonight.

Its scary to think McCauley is only a sophomore. If his footwoork gets any better he'll dethrone Emmitt Smith in an danceoff someday.

Wasn't it nice to watch a team actually play basketball for once? Amazing how much easier it is to win when you don't have shitty defenders like Evtimov creating mismatches every night.

If we can get some solid performances from Fells (man he sucked tonight) and Costner (stick to rebounding, you shoot like a girl) we're gonna be decent this year and upper-echelon ACC next year.

Wow that's a good one man. I don't know what ACC refs you've been seeing but even in our home games we rarely get favored on the questionable calls.

The ACC refs call everything a foul.

Its going to make it tough on our lack of depth. Costner is gonna get in a lot of foul trouble because he's short and slow so he'll be stuck hacking most of the game.

But at the same time we've got possibly the best slasher in the ACC in GGrant and he should get to the line a TON when conference play starts.

This season Gavin Grant is going to really put into perspective how overrated Hodge was.

Yeah, I am very surprised at how much Grant has improved recently. But his ego is still huge and after a few good plays he starts doing stupid shit like all of the mistakes late in the Michigan game. (yeah I know he was probably pretty exhausted at that point) But its better than the last few years, where his only talent was charging.

I agree we played well, but Michigan really isn't THAT great of a basketball team. Sure, they are better than any other team we have played thus far, but I think Michigan will drop a lot of games this year.
But I agree that State will surprise a lot of people this year. But we will also have those token losses that leave us all going, "Wtf, how did we lose to that team."

We got a bit ballsy last night with some forced passes that probably would have worked fine against the crappy teams we've played so far but a div 1A team will not allow and thus turned it over to many times.

we turned the ball over like 13 times all game, i can remember getting to that number in herb's offense 10 minutes into games. 13 isn't that bad, grant had 7 of them and 3 were because he was at point instead of atsur, which means the rest of our team had only 6 turnovers.

you are glad? do you realize when we left man and went zone they tore into that lead
now granted, the team was pretty tired losing engin but still
we did not do a good job rotating

hell, i think the only reason we went to zone was to try and give the guys a break on D but that sure as shit didnt matter when the blue started knocking down threes

Yeah at halftime the only comment they really made about the game was that "this michigan team has the potential to be last years Florida."

If I remember correctly UF did quite well last year, so I took that as saying that this Michigan team has the POTENTIAL to be great. Granted all teams don't always reach that potential. They were also a #1 seed in the NIT last year, and brought back everyone. People were just waiting for them to get a decent win to bump them into the top 25. If they had beaten us I bet they would have been 18-20 in the polls.

Hell I'm rooting for Michigan to be a great team this year, will be a nice boost to our NCAA resume(if we do well enough to be considered).

Michigan hasn't made the NCAAs at all under Amaker, and with that school and resources, that is unacceptable. He will be fired if they don't make it this year. And I don't know what game you all were watching, but Michigan is not that good, Ill sure be surprised if they make the NCAAs.
