i dont' really see blu-ray as something only hardcore videofiles want.i really don't consider myself a hardcore videophile at all. but dvd quality really doesn't cut it these days. and the prospect of getting a next-gen dvd player + game system for ps3's price isn't too out of the question.caveat: if blu-ray doesn't last as a format, i wouldn't really consider the ps3 (that's the main reason i probably won't buy one for a while - if at all)
10/10/2006 8:49:07 PM
basically i was including the possibility of failure and/or limited selection of movies in my equation.
10/10/2006 9:00:25 PM
I work at Best Buy and that's not a day I'm looking foward to coming into to work. I'm predicting atleast a trampling. If I'm able to get my hands on one, it's hitting ebay with the quickness. Some european kid is gonna be willing to give his left nut to be one of the only kids is his respective country with one.Once all is said and done I forsee the Wii coming out on top, followed by PS3 and XBOX360 with third. When all those people who couldn't/wouldn't get a PS3 start looking for a second choice, it's probably gonna be a Wii. It may not have the developer backing like the others but it's equilibrium point is gonna be considerably higher.
10/10/2006 9:08:39 PM
is best buy doing the pre-sale?
10/10/2006 9:14:45 PM
^^what the fuck are you talking about
10/10/2006 9:18:29 PM
i thought the price had gone down on these? was i wrong with that assumption?
10/10/2006 9:19:51 PM
Sony going lower than the expected price point? haha, riiight
10/10/2006 9:21:27 PM
^^you are thinking about prices in japan
10/10/2006 9:22:58 PM
they're $500 and 600, for 20G and 60G hard drives.
10/10/2006 9:39:18 PM
Yes, prices are down in Japan, not in America
10/10/2006 10:01:05 PM
I have a feeling something is going to go down on this ebay thing, like maybe Sony getting up wth ebay and telling them not to allow it or something. Could get nasty. just a feeling I have. That said, there will be a whole lot more PS3s on Ebay than xbox 360s went on ebay because I swear over half the people that got preorders are just going to sell them. The price is going to be a lot less than they expect on ebay due to this high supply. I swear, there will be over 100,000 PS3s up on ebay come November 17th.
10/11/2006 10:31:44 AM
^high supply? 400,000 consoles shipped...if everyone on ebay sets high reserves, then people bidding will have no choice as what to pay for them
10/11/2006 10:34:56 AM
i think his point is that you can only skim so much of the market. if everyone prices their ps3 at 1500 bux but only 50k people want it for that much, then those other 150k (assuming half went to ebay) are SOL and have to lower their prices (not to mention eat up auction costs from the first go round).everyone has caught on to the trend, prices will feel downward pressure because of the ebay supply, not the supply in general.[Edited on October 11, 2006 at 10:55 AM. Reason : probably slower downward until after xmas like 360's.]
10/11/2006 10:53:00 AM
^ exactly. Another business student I'm assuming... Or just someone that understands economics.
10/11/2006 11:28:54 AM
ps3's on ebay are already selling for $1500+...people are saying they will be shipped on the 17th, that would be ballsy to buy one right now, but this looks good for you ebay sellers
10/11/2006 12:10:02 PM
this is true, but again, i think once it actually is the 17th shits gonna drop down.
10/11/2006 12:53:30 PM
^agreed
10/11/2006 1:30:22 PM
why buy now? Its just going to be buggy as hell and 4 out of 10 people are going to have to return faulty consoles
10/11/2006 7:47:27 PM
funny, i haven't heard of anyone having to return their PS3.oh, that's right! PS3 isn't even out yet...
10/11/2006 9:48:14 PM
I agree about ebay PS3 prices plummeting on the 17thPeople expecting $2k+ are probably a bit out of line. I think they might sell for double, but not much more. I got an Xbox 360 (waited in front of a Target in the freezing cold for 3 hours before opening, grrr) and made $300, but didn't get the memo about the PS3 pre-order so I'm probably out of the eBay game this go-round.Still, people figured out eBay was the hot ticket w/ the 360, thus 50%+ (I'd guess) of pre-orders will end up on eBay, DRASTICALLY dropping prices.
10/11/2006 10:19:29 PM
ebayers must unite and not except anythign below 1500...buy it now for $1500!!!
10/11/2006 11:16:53 PM
what about selling one now (getting the $1500 in hand before you spend any money) and promising to have one shippedCould I sell a contract on ebay saying Im going to stand outside for a day waiting for an xbox and then ship it asapId definately stand outside for a day for 900 or anything close to that
10/12/2006 12:52:17 AM
apparently ebay is now going to crackdown on selling ps3s http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20061015-7988.html
10/16/2006 10:32:26 AM
jesus you need to learn how to fucking read before you try to scare wolfwebbers like that
10/16/2006 10:36:10 AM
Why the ? This is a good thing. You'll still be able to sell your PS3 at stupidly high markups the second you get your hands on it. They're just not allowing people to sell something that they may or may not get. All this move will do is cut down on the scammers. Anyone with a legit PS3 sale won't be affected by this in the slightest.[Edited on October 16, 2006 at 10:38 AM. Reason : pretty much what he said. ^]
10/16/2006 10:37:31 AM
it does make it a lot more of a pain though. not to mention, people wont get that early boost from there only being a small supply of preorders. everyone is REALLY gonna dump on the 17th now.
10/16/2006 10:42:07 AM
you'd be a fool to sell your PS3 (preorder) now anyway, considering you have to ship w/in 7 days of the auction's end to be elligible for Paypal's seller protection policy.personally, I will probably wait until right before Christmas to unload the rest of mine. mmmmmm I can smell the desperation already![Edited on October 16, 2006 at 10:43 AM. Reason : d]
10/16/2006 10:42:08 AM
^^so basically you're saying this will drive the overall price for the end user down. And this is bad...how?Oh that's right. People won't be able to get a $1000 markup on their PS3. Boo freaking hoo.
10/16/2006 10:44:46 AM
"maybe if i tell all these wolfwebbers that you cant sell your ps3 on ebay, they will believe me and i can make more money with it"[Edited on October 16, 2006 at 10:45 AM. Reason : ^my original post was gonna be "are me and elnacho the only ones that think this is a good thing"]
10/16/2006 10:45:09 AM
i didnt say it was bad. i didnt buy a preorder and im glad no one will make a killing because they are douchebags.
10/16/2006 11:11:14 AM
yeah its protects the buyers and stuff, etc...i just dont feel like having to do all that to sell it but im gonna have to...and i wasnt planning on selling the ones i have now anyways, we're waiting.
10/16/2006 12:43:24 PM
you have PS3s already??
10/16/2006 12:52:42 PM
haha
10/16/2006 7:43:01 PM
I really dont understand how dvd quality doesnt cut it these daysI mean, is hd really worth all the costs incurred?America is just too hellbent on entertaining ourselves
10/16/2006 7:53:21 PM
it is nice. i could live without it, but when these systems are gonig to last for the next 4+ years (they say longer) then it is a must. this is particularly true since we'll be moving towards a new movie medium and regular tv will also be in hd.
10/16/2006 7:54:54 PM
umm, you really are missing out if youre playing a 360 on a regular tv, when you play all these games in HD its amazing...all the screenshots you see and stuff is all what it looks like in HD but the games definitely are even better in motion. as far as buying "all this HD stuff", i cant live without it now for tv shows, sporting games, movies, etc...analog tv hurts my eyes
10/16/2006 7:58:48 PM
i played chromehounds briefly in non-hd. it was pretty shitty now that im used to it. i dont have a problem with regular tv though cuz i sit much further away.
10/16/2006 8:05:24 PM
my goal is to stop smoking reefer and with all the money i could save, buy a projecter thats HD
10/16/2006 8:07:49 PM
so where should i camp out if i decide to?target, walmart, best buy, etc?
10/16/2006 11:56:21 PM
Sears, Circuit City, Toys'R'Us (unless they do preorders which they might do), etcYou wanna hit the places people arnt expecting to hit.
10/17/2006 12:00:47 AM
Going by last years 360 experience here's what I would suggest. Do internet research beforehand. Last year I knew exactly how many 360 were delivered to each store about a week before they went on sale. As it turned out the Target in Cary got more units than any other store in the area. I'm not saying it will be the same this time around, but like I said, you will probably know the numbers if you check the internet/call around/make friends with a store employee. The best buy/circuit city numbers were leaked on the internet, I called around to Walmarts, and I went by and made friends with this cute girl that worked at Target and got her to spill those numbers to me. Basically just find the store that has the most units, show up at least 12 hours before they open, bring a warm coat, a rain jacket, lots of entertainment and snacks and wait it out. If you really want one on Launch day.edit for other tips:I'd really recommend staying away from Best Buy, and to a lesser extent Wal-mart. That's where everyone thinks to go. Last year at the Cary BB there was a line bigger than the amount of 360s at 8pm. and that was for a 10am store opening. Whereas at Target, I got there at 10pm and was only 12th in line for a store that had 48 units and a 8am store opening. You could have shown up at Target at 7:45 and got in line and got a (core) 360. I saw it happen. I got my 360 and was out of the store before 8:30. That was 90 minutes before Best Buy opened, and I "only" had to stand in line for 10 hours. Truth be told, I could have showed up at 5am and still gotten a Premium 360, but I had no way of knowing that. Just do a little research, be smart, and try to avoid doing what the masses do. Check availability in places like BJs too. You never know. Last year they got 6 360s, and somehow I doubt they had 6 people waiting in line the night before. I'd also think about getting away from the Cary/Raleigh area. College towns are going to get more PS3s but they are also gonna have a LOT more people wanting them. Maybe a 45 minute drive to Burlington wouldn't be a horrible idea. Think outside the box and be willing to stand in line, those are my two best pieces of advice.[Edited on October 17, 2006 at 12:25 AM. Reason : more stuff.]
10/17/2006 12:10:24 AM
i stumbled across a report that had said best buy bought 200,000 of the 400,000 because theyre like trying to be the launch kings. on top of that, if every eb/gamestop got 8-10 ps3s, that leaves very little for other stores...i wouldnt be suprised if best buy did buy half the launch shipments...
10/17/2006 10:10:30 AM
i think i'll just wait another year to get a ps3. there's still a shit load of good games coming out for ps2.
10/17/2006 11:23:48 AM
10/18/2006 3:18:49 PM
These things are going to go like hotcakes....esp if you are willing to sell to europe...who have no other way of getting one this early and also enjoy a good exchange rate...

Sony shows off PlayStation 3, new gamesBy MAY WONG, AP Technology Writer Thu Oct 19, 9:47 PM ETSAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - As the countdown to its Nov. 17 U.S. launch neared, Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news). showed off its PlayStation 3 game console Thursday and named 22 titles that will be available at the same time. The games at launch will run the genre gamut, from racing and war games to updated, more powerful versions of popular sports titles — "the most robust game lineup" of any new-generation game system, boasted Kaz Hirai, president and chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America.Sony's own in-house developed titles, such as a first-person shooting game called "Resistance: Fall of Man" will be $59.99.Other games that will be available for download directly onto the PS3 will be priced at $14.99 or less, Sony officials said.Prices of certain accessories also were disclosed: $50 for an extra wireless controller; $15 for a memory card adapter; and $25 for a remote control for the system's built-in Blu-ray disc drive player. The console is already the most expensive among the new generation of game systems with a price tag of $500 or $600, depending on the model, but analysts say Sony's dominance in the video game market still will dictate its success.Sony has sold 106 million PlayStation systems globally, including 40 million of them in the U.S., while Nintendo Co. has sold roughly 21 million GameCubes, and Microsoft Corp. has sold about 23 millionXbox systems, said P.J. McNealy, an analyst at American Technology Research."At the end of the day, Sony still has tremendous brand loyalty here, and they'll sell millions," he said.Sony officials were equally optimistic."We've always had formidable competition," Jack Tretton, executive vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said in an interview.Introducing a product this time as a market leader seems less daunting than the challenge he faced when helping to launch the first PlayStation against the then-industry kings, Nintendo and Sega, Tretton said.[Edited on October 20, 2006 at 5:02 AM. Reason : is a regular game more expensive?]

you can watch a dvd on the 360 without a remote.i have done it before. perhaps you should speak on what you actually know.
10/20/2006 8:41:12 AM
You could not watch a DVD on an X-Box without the remote. Who said anything about the 360?Quit being a douche.
10/20/2006 8:47:22 AM
xbox - need remote360 - dont need the remote but premium comes with a sweet remote
