So I did my draft for my 14 team "real" leauge today, and I think I did pretty good. I had 12th pick and was surprised to have Steve Smith fall to me in the first, and Lamont Jordan fall to me in the 2nd.QB - P. Rivers (SD - QB)WR - S. Smith (Car - WR)WR - D. Jackson (Sea - WR)WR - J. Horn (NO - WR)RB - L. Jordan (Oak - RB) RB - W. Dunn (Atl - RB) TE - M. Lewis (Jac - TE)K - A. Vinatieri (Ind - K)BN - F. Gore (SF - RB)BN - B. Edwards (Cle - WR)BN - B. Johnson (Min - QB) BN - E. Conwell (NO - TE)DEF - Tampa Bay (TB - DEF)BN - San Diego (SD - DEF)When you have a 14 team draft, players start getting a little thin around the 10th pick or so. I think I did pretty well overall, this league has wierd rules for kickers, where long field goals are worth a ton, and 50+ yarders are worth significantly more than a touchdown, I thought it was a good idea to take Vinatieri pretty early (6th). My first QB was pretty late also, when I took Rivers in the 8th.

Well, its gonna be tough, but I like my team. It is an uber-competitve league, that has an interesting scoring system. 3 bonus points for 100 yards receiving, and for 300 yards passing.10 yards per point rushing, 20 per recieving, 50 per passing...but to balance that out we do play points per reception and points per completion (.5 each with a -.5 per incompletion)******************************QB J. Delhomme (Car - QB) QBWR A. Boldin (Ari - WR) WRWR R. Wayne (Ind - WR) WR WR D. Mason (Bal - WR) WRRB R. Johnson (Cin - RB) RBRB B. Westbrook (Phi - RB) RBTE J. Witten (Dal - TE) TE*****************************BN D. Bennett (Ten - WR) WR BN C. Benson (Chi - RB) RBBN B. Leftwich (Jac - QB) QBBN L. Maroney (NE - RB) RBBN E. Wilford (Jac - WR) WRBN K. Winslow (Cle - TE) TEBN NO Sun*******************************K J. Brown (Sea - K) DEF Seattle (Sea - DEF) DEF*******************************As commish of this league, I knew I wouldnt get a high pick, but i wasnt prepared for the 8th overall. You have to start with a running back, so I went with Rudi, very underrated and very consistent (finished with 10 td's in last 7 games), seeing as the top three, then portis, Tiki, Manning, and S. Jackson all went before my turn, I felt he was the most consistent and risk free pick out there. Then C. Williams went, followed by Ronnie Brown, Lamont Jordan, and Steve Smith so I took westbrook based on potential value this year, plus the fact that its a ppr league. He should get at least 60 catches this year. I know he is hurting right now, but come regular season, I am hoping he will be fine.My receivers look great, arguably the best in the draft top to bottom. Boldin, Wayne, and Mason make a solid starting 3, with Bennett and Wilford off of the bench.I had to take Benson simply for the fact that with both he and Thomas jones hurting, there is a good chance he is still in the running for the starting job. Both he and Marooney are iffy, but if the guys they are competing with get hurt, both could be great picks. My QB's arent anything spectacular, but I do expect some pretty good things from Delhomme. From a fantasy perspective, I am hoping D. Foster gets hurt (pretty likely) so he can get into his gun slinging ways. Leftwich is a sleeper QB for me...he was on pace for great numbers last year (~27 TD's) until her got hurt. Hopefully Garrard wont take his spot. Im very happy with my TE's. I expect Witten to be the beneficiary of T.O. much more than Glenn. The double coverage of Owens should really open up the field for Witten down the middle, and based on sheer intrigue, I took Winslow just to see what he is all about. Could be boom, could be bust....so goes the life of a sleeper pick. At worst he gets used one week, at best, he is a diamond in the rough.Kicker and Defense are on the better side of good...almost great as far as I am concerned. I am thinking Seattle wont be able to punch it in as often as before because of a depleted O-line, so they may have to settle for a few more FG's than last year.I took their defense as well...ranked 6th on my list. Thier schedule is so soft:Arizona twiceSan Fran twiceDetroit onceOaklandGBetc..that I had to take them...they were great last year and led the league in sacks with a much tougher schedule than that of this year.My goal is to upgrade on my running bask situation. If i can take care of that, I should be good to go.Interested to hear your thoughts...
8/14/2006 3:42:31 PM
^what about Julius jones....was he still on the table when you picked Rudi? He should have a pretty good year this year...better than rudi? maybe..maybe not
8/14/2006 5:03:07 PM
good idea...but at this point with Parcells intent on sharing carries between Jones and Barber, as well as Jones being injury prone, he is a late 2nd too early third RB taken in my book.I would definitely take Westbrook and Rudi over Jones this season...unless they were to trade Barber, which doesnt look likely at all.
8/14/2006 5:06:34 PM
I would have definitely taken Rudi over Julius. People just seem to forget how reliable Rudi is. Julius is just an injury waiting to happen.
8/14/2006 5:14:49 PM
good call....didnt realize that about barber.....figured jones would be the go to guy since he did well last year when he wasnt hurt. What round do you think Vernon davis would be a good pick for? He is a freak but dont know about ol' alex smith[Edited on August 14, 2006 at 5:15 PM. Reason : asd]

^^ my thoughts exactly.which was why I did what I did.my team is minus the big names...but I really feel like I could be ok.Im the friggin back to back champion....I have to do something!Vernon is a freak, but I wouldn't trust him as my #1...not yet at least.even with Alex Smith, TE's run shorter routes and are good outlets for unproven QB's.I imagine those two to be a poor man's Rivers to Gates combo.[Edited on August 14, 2006 at 5:23 PM. Most of the draft lists I have seen have him way way down, to where he would never be picked if it was an auto draft. I would pick him up in the last couple of rounds, I did with one of my drafts.[Edited on August 14, 2006 at 5:17 PM. Reason : Talking about Vernon Davis]

^^^^^^^^i don't think i 'd count playing arizona twice as a good thing. i think they'll have one of the top 3 offenses in the league this year along with the colts and bengals. they have a potential top 5 running back, one of the top 2 WR pairs, and i have a feeling warner is going to return to his MVPish(not that good) form again. i admit i know little about their OL, but with that much talent at the skill positions, i'll take them as a top 3 offense.[Edited on August 14, 2006 at 5:46 PM. you cant be a top 3 offense without a line.arizona will be much improved, and they're my pick to win their division even, but they won't be a top 3 offense this year.

^things I dont like about your Roster:1) you are starting a WR/TE combo from the same team in Witten and Glenn. I dont reccomend doing that simply because only one of them can score at a time. Witten is a great pick, imo, but glenn is expendable.Depending on health status and based on ^...I would bump glenn to the bench, move Housh to a WR spot, and move D. Davis up to the RB position. Afterall, he is a RB, not WR. Keep an eye on Davis though...the longer he goes without playing (knee), the more concerned I would be.2) Your bench could be awesome....Your bench could suck ass. You have lots of "sleeper picks" such as Winslow, DeAngelo Williams, Cotchery, Bell and even Rivers. They could boost you to the top if the come through, but they could do absolutely nothing and send you to the cellar if they don't. Keep Rivers and Brady...but I would worry about your bench. You should probably consider dropping one or two of those sleepers for some proven seocndary players that are still available.3) You have 6 WR's and only 4 RB's, 2 of which are rookies, 1 has never carried the load by himself, and the other is as injury prone as the get. Sidenote: In no instance would I trade a very consistent Tom Brady and be forced to start either Rivers or Favre without seeing what they are bringing to the table come regular season...UNLESS you were getting a second tier QB (bulger, delhomme, etc) and a decent starting RB.Conclusion: You have work to do, my friend.- The Guru.[Edited on August 15, 2006 at 11:27 AM. I say your team just went from ok, to really friggin good. You should now have one open spot on your roster, unless it was a two for two deal.you should use that on a shaping your roster to have someone who is not a star, but at least not a rookie. You bench is full of uproven players and/or rookies. is there anyone like a greg jones available? Even Brandon Jacobs (RB Giants) could be serviceable depending on your scoring system?Chris Henry?Mark Clayton? Also, Look for another team defense...the Steelers are always good, but its a luxury to be able to start a team based on the matchup, not just by default. I like having 2 team defenses, but thats just me.Shop around and see what all is out there and let me know. But overall, that trade significantly upgraded your team. Well done. You get the Guru's seal of approval.

^ thats tough. How many teams is deep? 14?that roster is pretty thin, especially with an unproven Rivers and old man NcNair at QB. McNair could have a throwback year, so it might not be that bad.it looks like you had a mid to late rd first pick...and went with Lamont Jordan. not a bad pick, but not a great one either. If aaron brooks doesnt step up, teams are going to stack the line and forced rush throws and stuff the run. for your sake, I hope that doesnt happen.I cant seem to figure out who you took 2nd. Dillon or Parker? I think that is where you made the first mistake...In a league as deep as yours, you need to maximize your picks, meaning that it would serve you better to take a great WR with a 2nd pick rather than taking an aging mid level RB who has a solid rookie breathing down his back.I do like parker though...he should get a tone of looks and lots of receptions as well. If you are in a PPR league (points per reception), he could be a very nice pick. Think a healthy Westbrook with other weapons around him to make it easier. I like that pick.Moss was your 3rd rd pick? Not bad, but i dont see him duplicating last years performance. You have to keep in mind that he scored 10 TD's last year, but scored them all in 6 games, scoring three in one game, and 2 in another. He's pretty streaky, and considering all of the weapons they added, and with an aging Brunell, odds are he wont be as good as last year. still, not a bad pick.Same with Jurevicius. He played on a team full of monsters last year and had Alexander to open things up for the WR's. you dont need me to tell you that things wont be the same in Cleveland. Droughns is good, but not that good. Also, he wont rack up alot of yards, but he could be a nice red zone target and a source of a few unexpected TD's..but again, this all depends on how productive his QB and RB's are. As a side note, there is no way to justify having two Browns, especially 2 WR's on your roster. Dump Edwards and shop immediately.I love Matt Jones as a WR this year. He is a huge, speedy, and athletic target for Leftwich, and now replaces Jimmy Smith as thier number one reciever. He may start of unproductive, as he and Leftwich are getting on the same page, but give him time. I expect at least 6-8 TD's from him this year.Wiggins @ TE...meh. The Good: He will catch lots of passes, simply because Johnson throws to him alot now in thier new west coast offense. The Bad: The catches will be for 3-7 yards each, and not alot of TD's. Wiggins is a pretty big dude. He is an outlet TE, not one that will run the midle of the field and stretch the defense.Vernon Davis.Hell, NC State fans know better than most how good this guy is...He's torched us a few times. But the fact remains that he is unproven at the next level, and has a so-far unsuccessful QB throwing to him. I expect him to be alot like wiggins initially, just playing as an outlet, but by the end of season I wouldnt be suprised to see him with 4-6 TD's. Could be more, but unitl we see more, it could also be less. People are calling him the next Gates, so he is worth holding onto unitl the 49er "pans out". Kicker and Defense are good to go. It wouldnt be a bad idea to have a 2nd defense, so you can start one based on the matchup. This is the case especially with the Jags, as they are starters most of the year, but do have two games against the Colts and a bye.Addai and Young are unproven and have capable starters in front of them. This could be a season of develpment for both, but who knows. I see Addai being productive long before Young is. Considering you already have 2 QB's, niether of which you know what you are going to get, I would look to dump young for another position. If there are other QB's out there, take a veteran if available. Brees, Brad Johnson, Volek, Favre. These guys arent flashy, but at leasy you know they will play. Johnson is the sleeper of that Bunch...even without Koren, I expect him to have a pretty good year and would make a good backup.Let me know who else is available on your waiver wire.- The Guru.

^i think you have a very good team. i am shocked that you were able to get steven jackson with the 23rd pick??? thats almost unthinkable. he's been going around 8th in all the drafts i've seen. and i guess you got dom davis with the 26th? thats a good pick at that point, IMO. do people in your league not know what they're doing?in fairness, the other teams in your league may be stacked as well...because it is only 8 teams (which is too few, IMO. i like 12 much better). but i like your team.

I agree with every thing you have said I believe...the league is 20 deep...yea i know. I did take those in the order you have said jsut because of where they fell into my lap...most of the other QB's were gone and I had no choice, im about to see whos left as far as QB's go and pick up a veteran whos not injury prone. Im still not sure how deep my WRs are and wouldnt mind having a few there. I really like my RBs though I think and I do get points per reception which is why I picked up Parker and Wiggins, especially Wiggins. heres whats left as far as QB's and WR go...C. Pennington J. McCown J. Kitna C. Frye K. Boller C. Simms B. Volek M. Leinart P. Ramsey B. Griese A. Smith R. Dump Young, pick up........................KITNA!yea, I said it. He's solid (as a backup or 3rd string), has good recievers, and nice RB, Martz at Offensive Coordinator, and they will have to throw at least 60% of the time to stay in games. He may suprise you...Trust me and go with Kitna.as far as receivers, pick up either Ma. Clayton or Engram. Clayton is a solid #2 who will have great year in my opinion.Engram is battling with Burleson for the #2 spot behind Darrell Jackson...but considering DJ's injury history, Engram may end up on the field alot this year anyway, plus the Seahawks will be throwing alot more than last year in my opinion. These dont sound like great choices, but especially in a 20 man league, you have to maximize your picks. These picks would do just that. I promise you will get more out of them than Young and Edwards.[Edited on August 17, 2006 at 2:17 PM. Reason : asdf]
8/17/2006 2:16:58 PM
I agree with panthro with everything he said, but I would look to maybe pick up Michael Jenkins as a receiver over Clayton (and depending on where he ends up on the depth chart, over Engram also). Vick is vowing to be more of a pocket passer this season, and Jenkins is the #1 WR and I feel is ready for a breakout season. If you watched the Falcons preseason game last weekend the you probably saw Jenkins make a great catch for a TD.so, if Vick does throw the ball more often this season, he will have two receiving options: Crumpler for short gains up the middle or Jenkins downfield. He could be a good sleeper pick.

im not too worried about T.O. getting in parcell's doghouse, he produces when he is on the field and thats really all Parcells cares about these days - winning.now the hamstring issue could be a problem, but since he is back practicing, I'll take that as a good sign.

whew...I've been away all weekend....y'all niggaz got some questions. ok...in order of the questions:AxlBonBach:I'm not quite sure what your scoring system for defenders is, as it varies per league. it looks like you are playing 5? IDP's (Individual defensive positions) and a team defense? Thats pretty crazy, but fill me in on your scoring system so I can address the question better.Just by glancing at them on paper, I would immediately turn down the Gates trade, as well as the Sammy Knight and Brooking for Portis. WTF? Dont even think about that.I would however immediately hop on the Bush and Williams for Moss Trade. As I said earlier in this thread, more and more people are completely steering clear of ALL Raiders, including Moss and Jordan. The simple fact that they have no QB that is worth a damn is killing everyone's value on that team. Williams will be phenomenal this year in Martz's system, and with Kitna at QB, he will have some catchable balls thrown his way. That alone makes the trade a wash, but then when you throw in Bush into the mix, his upside his unreal, and regardless if he doesnt pan out, he is at worst, a way for you to upgrade your own team by trading him to some knucklehead later on.Trust me, take that trade as soon as possible.PrufrockNCSU:The chances are much better for a receiver to make a TD than it is for a return man, as the factors involved in returning kicks are numerous...quality of kick, return coverage, number of attempts, 1 v 11, etc. This again is the value of someone like Reggie Bush. While he may not be a star Running back, he will get his carries, his passes, and his returns on Punts and occasionally kickoffs. Unless you have the opprotunity to go with someone as dynamic as that (Bush, D. Hall, ?), then it is always best to go with a WR, especially if you are in a PPR league. Who did you have in mind in this scenario? depending on who you are talking about, there are always exceptions to the rule.FuhCtious:Your team looks nice, but I would suggest, depending on your starting Roster (meaning how many people do you actually start per week) that you try to bulk up your receivers and and back up RB's. People may laugh at that seeing as you have some great starters, but those who know fantasy football know that in order to win, you will at some point need help from a 3rd/4th WR or a 3rd RB. Obviously this is the case for bye weeks, but in general, depending on matchups, you might sometimes think about starting the 3rd guy in place of one of the top 2. Duece and Najeh are big questions marks. I would immediately look at RB's like Frank Gore (sole starter for the 49er's), Barlow (just traded to Jets), Greg Jones (likely starter by half way through the season for the Jags), Mike Bell (hot right now, but could still be available) etc. These guys are not household names, but are great pickups and could be the difference between a fun season, and a championship one. Good team though, and as a side note, I think Matt Jones should start over Clayton, and you should see what others are willing to give up for Rothlesburger, as he could be preety damn good this season. 3 QB's is a little much...at least in my opinion.- The Guru.[Edited on August 20, 2006 at 9:25 PM. I'll be taking those 'exceptions' as sleepers in my draft.I'm sure if you did the research you could find the 2 or 3 I'm thinking of.
