^beat me to it, thank you
3/21/2006 3:36:06 PM
wow, for you to come up with the assumption that i'm a slow driver because i said the speed limit is 65mph is pure retardedness. yeah yeah, go ahead and be a stupid retard and bash me. make yourself feel better.
3/21/2006 3:49:50 PM
retarded like thinking because the speed limit is 65 it means people dont ever go faster than that?
3/21/2006 3:53:23 PM
duhhh, of course people go faster than 65mph. what are you trying to prove? even i go faster than 65mph. just trying to point out that this car is practical on the highway since it's top speed is 85mph and the speed limit is 65mph. of course this car isn't for everyone because there will always be people who are impatient.
3/21/2006 4:06:23 PM
point we're making is that since everyone is impatient, you will get your ass run over in that little whip...
3/21/2006 4:09:30 PM
3/21/2006 4:10:56 PM
3/21/2006 4:45:18 PM
are those anything like these?
3/21/2006 4:48:46 PM
the top speed is high enough, but im guessing it takes way too long to get to the speed limit for safe merging
3/21/2006 4:49:23 PM
no, i'm telling you from experience that an 85 mph top speed is a big pain in the ass on the interstate.and it will probably merge safely, but only under full power, with a driver who's willing (and capable) of treating onramps like a road course (i could always get my jeep up to merging speed, but sometimes it took WOT and apexing corners/cornering harder than many people would want to do in a jeep).
3/21/2006 4:54:11 PM
^haha, i remember that shit back in highschool with a 4 banger 5 speed s10. If it wasnt sideways getting on I85 you're fucked....soo damn much fun
3/21/2006 4:58:55 PM
as being probably one of the only people on here to drive a Smart ('03 Roadster), i can vouch that it is plenty speedy and nimble - fun little paddle shifters too
3/21/2006 5:07:51 PM
yeah, but it has a top speed of what, 120 or something?
3/21/2006 5:11:11 PM
hmm im not sure, i never topped it out, i just had a good time flying through the narrow streets of Nice in it
3/21/2006 5:14:25 PM
well, that's a different deal from I-95...but I think the Roadster is substantially quicker and faster than the Smart car shown in this thread. I saw something like 10sec from 0-60 and top speed of 120 mph, which is by no means quick or fast, but it's adequate.[Edited on March 21, 2006 at 5:22 PM. 10 seconds isn't bad
3/21/2006 5:25:40 PM
3/21/2006 5:53:53 PM
3/21/2006 5:56:00 PM
^^that's not "very fast"...but it's fast for a 50 mpg car.^look, besides the fact that most people significantly exceed the speed limits, and really, the cops and courts account for that by setting them low (too low, really, but that's another argument for another day), I've already explained that it really, really sucks to have to run the car at WOT constantly on the highway. I've been there, and it sucks.even if i never intended to go faster than 80-85, i'd want a top speed of over 100, just so 80-85 wouldn't be pushing the performance envelope.120 is kinda average, and 10 seconds from 0-60 is slow...but like i said, it is certainly ADEQUATE...but that's about it.
3/21/2006 6:35:41 PM
an 85 top speed is plenty to travel on the interstatehow is it not
3/21/2006 6:38:26 PM
It takes a long time to get up to top speed. Sometimes you need acceleration at freeway speeds and this thing has none if its top speed is 85.And if you're going uphill or into a headwind, you won't get anywhere near that topspeed. So you'll be stuck in the slow lane with 18-wheelers.
3/21/2006 6:43:13 PM
dude, I HAVE OWNED A VEHICLE WITH AN 85 TOP SPEED. it sucks on the interstate. if you are trying to run 80-83 or whatever, you basically plant your foot on the floor as you hit the onramp, and don't let up until you hit your exit. the gas mileage was slightly over half of what it normally would be around town or at 50-60 mph on a highway.if you go up even a slight grade, you lose speed. if you have a stiff headwind, you're looking at 80 mph.it sounds annoying to have your engine spinning that fast under load for hours.if someone gets in your way and causes you to lift off the throttle, it takes forever to get back up to speed (b/c the last few mph of a vehicle's top speed come so slowly).in my case, 5th gear eventually (112k miles) failed in the transmission. Part of it is b/c the AX-5 trans sucks, and part of it (i'm convinced) is that I was running the engine (under load, of course...therefore applying the torque to the driveline) near the torque peak for hours at a time on a regular basis. it didn't even break on a shift...i was driving up I-95 at constant speed, and 5th gear failed catastrophically without warning.[Edited on March 21, 2006 at 6:48 PM. 3/21/2006 6:47:22 PM
if it can get to 60 in 10 seconds and has a top speed of 85 thats plenty for the interstatethe only real argument is about size and safety
3/21/2006 6:57:27 PM
safety is sufficient. it's not a tank, but that's the risk of driving on the road to begin with.size is the issue for me. i won't always require a large storage space, but i can see myself requiring it from time to time (triathlon racing, training, etc.). other than that, it's a solid car for minimalists.
3/21/2006 7:00:45 PM
after prob 15,000 miles on motorcycles, i'm not worried about the safety of the Smart car. after owning both a 1st generation Miata and an S2000 with a sub in the trunk as my sole means of transportation, I could probably even deal with the size. After owning my Jeep, I could handle 10-sec 0-60 times...but i will never, ever own another car with an 85 mph top speed, at least not as a daily driver/only form of transportation. I wouldn't even give it slight consideration.[Edited on March 21, 2006 at 7:12 PM. Reason : asdfa]
3/21/2006 7:10:16 PM
its top speed of 85 will allow safe speeds on the interstateyou barely have a license, you arent the typical driver
3/21/2006 7:16:31 PM
perhaps your jeep had a clogged muffler that's about what my dad's frontier feels like right now. I ran it open downpipe to test whether or not it was something engine-related and gained back full power
3/21/2006 7:16:32 PM
^^ i have a clean driving record^nah, it would go faster until i put a 1" shackle lift and 31" tires on it (a mild setup, but enough to limit a 4cyl jeep to about 85...and more like 80 if you had the windows zipped out and doors off).but regardless of whether or not it was slightly down on power, i'm telling you that an 85 mph top speed is a big pain in the ass.
3/21/2006 7:22:36 PM
it can get to 60 in 10 secondsyou can do 65 or 70 safely on the interstateits enoughi know you like to justify your speeding with all kinds of crazy reasoning, but you dont have to speed. the people that buy this car arent going to be disappointed they arent the fastest person on the interstate.
3/21/2006 7:26:07 PM
speed demons are what make it unsafe for me to bike on the interstate.........
3/21/2006 7:31:34 PM
^^like i said, 10-seconds to 60 is slow, but adequate.85 mph is not. i mean, it is (BARELY) if you only occassionally get on the interstate, and then don't intend to go more than an hour or maybe two.basically, for what the car is designed to do, it's a perfectly good machine. however, with a handful of exceptions, it is simply not cut out to be a sole means of transportation in America.^speed doesn't hurt shit. stupid is what causes problems. and if you are riding a bicycle on a major highway (not to mention an interstate), then you are a huge hazard.[Edited on March 21, 2006 at 7:34 PM. 3/21/2006 7:33:35 PM
there is no perfect car for everybody.everybody has different needs.some people want/like different things. move on.^ i seriously hope you realize i was joking.[Edited on March 21, 2006 at 7:35 PM. Reason : .]
3/21/2006 7:35:09 PM
yeah, i figured you were, but i've seen cyclists do some horribly stupid, dangerous things.and again, like i said...there are a few people who this car will be well suited for (as their only vehicle)...but not many. not in America, anyway. things are spread out and there isn't any viable option like rail travel as there is in europe (don't say that amtrak is viable).
3/21/2006 7:38:43 PM
Is it surprising to anybody that the people who are basically pumped up testosterone-apes, gun freaks, homophobes, and religious republicans are the same ones that demand their car is capable of maniac-quality driving?Oh, and remember -- if it doesn't waste more gasoline than an Iraqi oilfield fire, it's "gay".Next time you do this, put it into a fucking tree and do us a favor[Edited on March 21, 2006 at 8:12 PM. 0-60 isnt really that slowjust a few years ago that was better than most cars people had. i would guess my probe hit 60 in around 12 seconds, when i bought my bmw before i tuned it up i was hitting 60 in 10-11 secondsand lots and lots and lots of people cruise at 70ish for hours and have no problem with it, not everyone needs to compensate
3/21/2006 8:29:43 PM
well since i did that in the middle of the texas dessert at night i dont think i put your little baby ass in any danger fagoh and i may be the first two, but not the second two by far... and i was born into fast cars and have worked on them my whole life so fuck off[Edited on March 21, 2006 at 8:35 PM. I just can't get comfortable in a car like that. I have driven Ions, Escorts, Focus's, etc. and really can't get comfortable in a car that small. The Corolla was the closest thing I could get to comfortable, and it still wasn't that great. I can drive a Ford Fusion or G6 and be comfortable, and lord knows I drive 60 miles/day roundtrip to work, so I'd love something better on gas. My 4-cylinder manual tranny Ranger gets the job done, but it only gets like 25 mpg, and it is slow as balls passing cars on 258 in the country. I love having a car with high acceleration and speed (why I own a Z28 vert) but I also appreciate fuel economy. But these cars are too small. I'd be more interested in like a VW Jetta/Passat diesel and convert it to greasel.
3/21/2006 8:51:20 PM
ok so i'm wrong. the car is clearly meant for the city streets. what will probably happen is they'll upgrade the engine to meet expectations of driving on the highway. they'll probably up the hp to at least 100.
